NOW YOU KNOW

Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy Blues Brothers Guitarist

American blues guitarist Matthew Tyler Murphy, was a native of Sunflower, Mississippi but got his start in Memphis, Tennessee. Moving to Chicago in 1948, he joined the Howlin’ Wolf Band – playing with many artists including Etta James, Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim. Murphy was considered essential to blues music in Chicago. In 1978, Murphy was approached for a musical project with Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, the creators of the Saturday Night Live skit The Blues Brothers. Based on the skit, the band went on several concert tours, recorded albums and shot the 1980’s film, The Blues Brothers. In the film, Murphy portrayed the short-order cook and husband of his waitress wife played by Aretha Franklin. Between touring with The Blues Brothers, Murphy recorded his own albums and appeared in the film’s sequel Blues Brothers 2000. Murphy suffered a stroke in 2001 that led to his retirement, but resumed performing in 2010. Murphy succumbed to a heart attack in June 2018.
