Nanyima Residential Aged Care
Monthly Newsletter
NOVEMBER 2018
MELBOURNE CUP
The months are zooming by quickly and the activities at Nanyima are
coming and going just as quick with so many celebrations as you will read
on the DT page. They amaze me with their energy to come up with ideas,
research, prepare, execute and then clean up. Of course the volunteers
play a big part with every stage of the events. Shopping was again
enjoyed this week by mostly women and this usually means a volunteer to
go with each of them. Coordinating and tracking this process across
Canelands is no easy task.
The Annual General Meeting for the Committee of Management was held
on Saturday 27th October and we appreciated the attendance of a cross
section of persons from the community including our Mayor Greg
Williamson. This year we saw the resignation of our 9 years Chairman
Peter Goodwin as he retires from the COM to spend more time with his
family. At this stage we don’t have a chair and trust their will be others
in the community who would like to be on the COM. We welcomed
Catherine Appleby to the COM and trust she will enjoy this connection
with Nanyima.
The wandering dementias at Nanyima are increasing and although we’ve
increased staffing to manage, we are now feeling the need to make a
specific area for them to reduce risks for all residents. This means we
will be relocating residents from D block and making this area a Dementia
Support Unit with specific staff allocated to provide the necessary needs
for the wandering dementia residents. To make this change we will be
having fire doors that can key padded and connected to the fire system
for immediate release in an emergency. We are also having some extra
fencing erected to ensure the outdoor area is safe for external activities.
This area will not be a dementia specific unit with no option for moving
around in other areas but it will provide the extra support to observe such
residents and ensure their safety. If alternations go to plan we hope to
make this move in November.
Melbourne Cup then Remembrance Day, followed by Nanyima
Christmas Carols are just some of the upcoming activities we
invite all to join. Having the community involved gives great
support to residents, staff and volunteers. Thank you to those
who never fail to support us in many different ways.
Until next month keep well and safe.

From Marion - DT
As the song goes, “Oops, there goes a billion kilowatt dam”. No I
mean “oops, there goes the month of October”. Friday the 5th we
attended Morning Melodies which was A Tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes and called
Frankly Sinatra. The performers skilfully narrated and sang the fascinating
life of Frank Sinatra. Singing his classic hits such as Fly Me to the Moon, My
Way, and Three Coins in a Fountain just to name a few. The resident
thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. We joined Good Shepherd and
Kerrisdale for lunch before heading back home.
OMG!!! What a sensory overload we had on the 11th and 12th at our annual
Flower and Plant Carnival. Sight; every colour of the rainbow was on display
with a wide range of orchids, other potted plants and cut flowers e.g. lilies,
roses, natives and gladioli. Smell; the fragrance from the display would hit
you before you even walked through the multipurpose room doors. Taste; a
delicious morning tea was served each day with a variety of cakes, tarts,
scones and slices. Hearing; It was great to see residents, family, community
members, friends, staff and volunteers all chatting and laughing throughout
the two days. Our ever loyal Rob Rolls joined us on the Friday and kept
everyone entertained. A group from Sarina Day Respite Centre also joined us
on the Friday. We held a cake and craft stall over the two days and a very
HUMBLE THANK YOU to everyone who supplied items for sale we raised
$671.50. I left the main event till last, a HUMONGOUS THANK YOU if I
could go bigger I would, goes to not three but the four musketeers. Our
carnival would not have been such a great success with out these guys and
they are Merv, Peter, Nev and Tony who supplied most of the plants for the
carnival. Peter kindly brought along all the gear to do potting demos each
day, which a few staff and visitors took advantage of. I don’t know about
Jen and the volunteers, but I went home Friday and had a couple of
refreshments.
Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble. A Coven of witches got together on
Wednesday the 31st for Halloween. They took great pleasure cooking up
some spiders and bats for our residents to sample [they were tasty little
treats] YUM!! Oh! And the red and green pikelets with worms coming out,
delicious.
Most Mondays, if the weather is kind, we are stilling doing our
wheelchair walks to the shop. The residents enjoy the time in the
fresh air and sun shine. It is good to see them sitting chatting
with our staff and volunteers watching the world go by, most of
all while savouring the ice cream they are eating.
We have our Christmas Raffle on the go you can read all about it on the back
page, tickets will be on sale at the office here at Nanyima or the Mirani Post
Office. Jen and myself will also be selling them at the shop on some
Saturday mornings. Another event to look forward to is our Carols by Candle
Light which will be held on the 21st of December. We are pleased that Rob
Rolls, The Sarina Community Choir, Church Choir and some children will be
entertaining everyone. Aussie Santa makes the effort to come all the way
from the North Pole and always brings some teats with him.
Bye for now.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition, which means it's caused by the immune system attacking healthy body tissue. However, it's not yet known what triggers this. Your immune system normally makes antibodies that attack bacteria and viruses, helping to fight infection We often think of arthritis as general joint pain or loss of mobility that affects us as we get older. Arthritis is actually an umbrella term for more than 100 different diseases and can impact young people as well as old. Rheumatoid arthritis – or RA – is the most serious and the second most common form, after osteoarthritis. It is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease that can be painful and disabling. Around 400,000 Australians and 40,000 New Zealanders have RA—that’s approximately 1-2% percent of the population. It can occur at any age but is more common over the age of 30 years and affects three times as many women as men with the disease. RA causes a range of symptoms, the most prominent being stiffness and swelling in the joints – particularly those in the hands, feet and knees. The joint pain is often felt in the same joint on both sides of the body and eventually, joints may lose their range of motion and may become deformed. Over time, people with RA may see a decrease in the ability to perform their daily activities. A growing body of research is focusing on the impact of obesity on people living with RA. Obesity in RA is associated with decreased physical ability and health as well as increased pain, and signs of inflammation. Researchers are finding that heavier people may actually have more severe forms of the disease, but they still don’t quite understand the connection between the two. Studies show that regular moderate exercise may help reduce joint pain and stiffness and improve psychological well-being. With RA, it's important to move. If you have rheumatoid arthritis (RA), you know that exercise is good for you. ... But research shows that RA pa-tients who exercise have less pain than other RA patients. Exercise can help boost your mood, improve joint function, and prevent muscle wasting and weakness. Do Low-Impact Aerobic Exercise. The best forms of exercise for people with rheumatoid arthritis are those that put minimal impact on affected joints, according to the American College of Rheumatology. These include low-impact aerobic dance, water exercises, walking, or stationary bicycles. So why not treat yourself to a hydro bath at Nanyima. Because RA is a chronic disease, those living with it may need ongoing treatment. Treatment can reduce signs and symptoms and improve physical function. If you’ve been diagnosed with RA, work closely with your healthcare team to develop the best treatment plan for you. What foods should I avoid if I have rheumatoid arthritis? 6 Foods to Avoid With Rheumatoid Arthritis Foods That May Worsen RA Symptoms. Red meat. Many cuts of red meat contain high levels of saturated fat, which can exacerbate I inflammation and also contribute to obesity. ... Sugar and refined flour. ... Fried foods. ... Gluten. ... Alcohol. ... Processed foods. Until next time, take care. Christine
