The Path to Citizenship

Who is a citizen ?• With few

exceptions anyone born in the U. S., Washington D.C., and U.S. Territories.

• Children born to diplomats are not citizens.

Can You Be A Citizen of Two Countries?

• Dual Citizenship

• A citizen of two

Countries.

Who is an Alien?

• Are you an Alien?

• Aliens are noncitizens.

Are You an Immigrant?

• An immigrant is an alien who plans to live here permanently.

• U. S. Quota of immigrants per year is 675,000. 27,000 for any one country.

Illegal Aliens

• Millions are in the U. S. illegally.

Legal Aliens – What they can do legally.

• 1. Hold a job

• 2. Own property

• 3. Attend school

• 4. Travel freely in the U.S.

What Legal Aliens Can’t Do

• Vote

• Run for public office

• Work in government jobs

• Must carry an ID card at all times.

Naturalization - The Process

• File a declaration of intent.

• Study English, American History, Civics. Must live in the U.S. for 5 years. (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen.)

• File an Application for Naturalization.

• Application review by the USCIS. United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. Have interview.

• Take Citizenship test on U. S. history, civics, and english.

• Take an oath of loyalty to the U.S.

Can You Lose Your Citizenship?

• By becoming a citizen of another country.
