REPORTS

Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement to Capt. Phillips-Jerry Achenbach, Superintendent of the GLMA, introduced Mr. Floyd Miras, MARAD Director- Great Lakes Gateway Office in Chicago, who presented the Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement to Captain Mark Eric Phillips, GLMA faculty and alum. Capt. Phillips was nominated in recognition of his distinguished career as a U.S. Merchant Marine officer and his dedication to the development of the next generation of U.S. Merchant Marine officers. The Board thanked Capt. Phillips for being another fine example ofNMC.

Faculty Report - Cruise on the State of Michigan-Mike Surgalski, GLMA Instructor and Captain on the TS State of Michigan, presented on the 45-day cruise that counts toward the required amount of sea time, including Coast Guard required river time, to provide all cadets similar experience. Surgalski explained there are multiple cruises per year and by the second trip the cadets are working the ship, for the most part. The Board thanked Mike Surgalski for his report.

HLC Update- Category 6: Quality Overview-Joy Evans, Executive Director of Research, Planning and Effectiveness, provided a status report on the HLC Systems Portfolio work timeline for NMC's accreditation process, sharing again that the full Systems Portfolio was due to the HLC on November 6, 2017. She presented on the Systems Portfolio Category 6: Quality Overview that includes quality improvement initiatives and culture of quality. This category provides the college with the opportunity to reflect on the quality improvement initiatives, how they are interpreted, and how they contribute to the improvement of the college; and provided supporting examples of each. In response to a question, Evans explained that teams are assigned to specific sections of the Systems Portfolio, which are then opened up to other groups for review and input.
