The richest sporting event in
Vermont returns to East Dorset this
summer, as the Vermont Summer
Festival horse show brings its
$750,000 in prize money to the
Manchester area on July 4 through
August 12.
Organizers cite generous sponsor
support as the basis for the event.
“We are fortunate at the Vermont
Summer Festival to have support
from both local and equestrian-brand
sponsors,” said Ruth Lacey, market-
ing director for the festival. “The
support of businesses such as
Purina, Johnson Horse
Transportation, Hand Motors and
the Equinox Resort plays a vital role
in the success of our event.”
New for 2012, the weekly Grand
Prix events move to Saturday each
week. The first five Saturdays feature
a $30,000 Grand Prix, while the grand
finale, the $50,000 Vermont Summer
Celebration Grand Prix, will be held
the sixth week of the festival on
Saturday, August 11. The weekly
$10,000 Open Welcome Stake, pre-
sented by Manchester Designer
Outlets, moves to Thursday each
week.
For junior and amateur show
jumping competitors, a $10,000
Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic will
be the highlight each week, while
Week Six will feature a $15,000
Children’s/Adult Jumper Classic.
The hugely popular $5,000 3’3”
Hunter Derby will be held each
Thursday for the first five weeks,
with Week Three designated as a
World Championship Hunter Rider
(WCHR) member event.
Based on positive feedback, festi-
val organizers have added a $15,000
Hunter Derby for the sixth and final
week, sponsored by the Vermont-
based equestrian luggage manufac-
turer Oughton Limited.
The Vermont Summer Festival
has attracted exhibitors and their
families to the Manchester region for
more than 20 years. The event is a
member event of the show Jumping
Hall of Fame, the Marshall & Sterling
League, and the North American
League (NAL). For more informa-
tion, email info@vt-summerfestival.

An opening reception will be held from 3 to 5
p.m. on Saturday, May 5 at the Canfield Gallery in
the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington for a
new group show entitled “The Group of 7.”
The show features seven popular area artists
who, for several years, have gathered once a
month to critique each other’s work. Ramona
Cook, Beth Hill, Rose Klebes, Virginia McNeice,
Ellen Questel, Mallory Rich and Helen Young all
work in pastel and oil.
“A good critique of a new piece of work, from
someone whose eye and experience you respect,
is a valuable thing,” said Mallory Rich.
The show promises to offer art lovers a varied
and exciting experience.
Painter Ruth Frost will pres-
ent her work in a solo show at
the Dorset Public Library in
May. An opening reception will
be held for the artist from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May
5.
A lifelong self-taught local
artist, Ruth Frost’s work can be
seen in the upstate New York
and southern Vermont areas.
Originally an acrylic folkart
painter, she was encouraged by
artists Roy Egg and Janine
Thomas to develop her abilities
in oil. She is a member of the
“Rupert Artistic Ladies” and
has shown her work in Pawlet,
the Pember Library’s “First
Friday,” Gardenworks, and
Rupert. Ruth’s landscapes and

Street Y programming to Manchester at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6,

Gustav Klimt radically reframed our understanding of ourselves
and our unconscious mental processes. Together, they initiated a
dialog between art and brain science that continues to provide
insight today.
Kandel is a professor of psychiatry, biochemistry and biophys-

Butterfly Garden
class at HildeneLearn how to create
your own but-
terfly garden
at Hildene on
Saturday, May 12
from 10 to 11 a.m. in
“Planning and
Maintenance of a Butterfly
Garden.” The class will be led
by Hildene Master Gardener
Cindy Lewis.
Last August, horticultural
enthusiasts gathered at Hildene
to learn how butterflies (mem-
bers of the Lepidopteran fami-
ly) are particularly sensitive to
pollution, climate changed and
loss of habitat. This new ses-
sion helps gardeners take this
knowledge to the next level.
Participants will review the
components of butterfly habitat
from host plants to shade and
shelter. The primary focus of the
session will be choosing the
right site, layout design, soil con-
sideration, and maintenance.
The program is free of charge
and open to the public. Check in

Visiting mosaic artist
Francesca DeLorme of East
Burke, VT spent three days at
the Long Trail School in March
guiding students on a very
ambitious mosaic project.
The three foot by five foot
mosaic is a collaboration of
ideas from students, formulated
into a design by LTS art teach-
ers Anharad Edson and Hakan
Brosnan. The design features a
birch tree (to represent stu-
dents’ growth at LTS) whose
branches support a globe (to
illustrate the students’ respon-
sibility to be stewards of the
earth). Now complete, the mosa-
ic is on display in the school’s
Hunter Center.
The school is grateful to the
Jonathan Levin Scholarship
Fund for its generous grant and
to the Southern Vermont Arts
Center for its continued support
of the arts in the Northshire.
