Cougar killed near ParkRoyal
BRENTRICHTERbrichter@nsnews.com
Conservation officers haveshot and killed a cougarspotted around the lowerCapilano River.
The cougar firststarted showing up in the
neighbourhood earlier inthe week. It hadn’t shownany signs of aggression soconservation officers optedto just monitor the situation, hoping the cougar wouldmove on.
“But is was obvious itmade itself at home there.
We started getting more andmore sightings,” said PeterBusink, conservation officer.“It was up on numerousbalconies and patios.Thiswas in the middle of the dayas well. It goes against thenatural behaviour of cougarsand represented an elevatedand unknown risk to theresidents of the area.”
Cougars can’t betranquilized and relocated,Busink said, so officers
made the tough decision tokill the big cat.
When the cougar wasspotted along the CapilanoRiver near Park Royal onThursday,WestVancouverpolice cordoned off the areaand kept the public away. Aconservation officer arrivedshortly after and shot theyoung, adult female — alittle bit skinny but otherwisehealthy — weighing about32 kilograms.
“The officer walkedup to it within 15 metresand it just lay there likea house cat, which is notat all normal behaviour— completely habituated, with no fear,” Busink said.
Conservation officershave been warning thepublic about increasedcougar sightings in theGrouse Mountain andMountain Highway areassinceTuesday. Busink said
officers believe the two catsare part of the same familythat is now dispersing acrossthe North Shore.
Busink said North Shoreresidents can help mitigatethe risk both humans andcougars face from eachother by keeping their yardsfree of things that will attractrodents the cougars prey on.

The think tank ratedtheWestVancouver SchoolDistrict first in the provinceamong public school districts— tied with Revelstoke— based on academic testscores, including results onprovincial exams. The NorthVancouver School Districtwas also in the top five, sharing fifth place with fourother school districts.
Having an “uber-engaged” parent communitythat supports its schools, aswell as a variety of sportsacademies and programs likeInternational Baccalaureatethat speak to students’passions is part ofWestVan’s recipe for success, said

Helppours in forRiverWoods
BRENTRICHTERbrichter@nsnews.com
The 26 families displacedby last week’s fire at theRiverWoods HousingCo-op will eventually beable to move back home— although most arefacing a long wait to findsomewhere to live in themeantime.
There is no official wordyet on what caused the blazethat put 76 people out oftheir homes though co-op’sinsurance company hasagreed to fund a rebuild.
The lesser-damaged
eight to 10 units will takeat least six weeks beforethey are repaired. “Theother 16 to 18 units arelooking at 12 to 16 months, best case scenario,” saidDiane Bennett, the co-op’spresident. “Nobody’s gettinghome anytime soon.”
DeniseWait and herfamily have been strugglingto pull the pieces of theirlives back together in thewake of the blaze. “Ourplace is pretty much a write-off.We were on the groundfloor where there’s lots ofsmoke and water damage. All the electronics are prettymuch a write-off. It’s justdisgusting. The smell in thereis horrible,” she said.
The family’s insuranceadjuster found them a placeto live but it’s a $5,000-
a-month luxury home onthe other side of NorthVancouver, meaning the kidswill have to stay with friendsso they can continue goingto school.
“We don’t need luxuryright now.We just need aroof over our heads,” shesaid. Competition for familyrental units is high and theburned-out residents stillhaving to carry on with day-to-day responsibilities.
The few things they wereable to salvage from the fireare the kids’ sports medalsand teddy bears “which needsome work done on them.”
The fire’s intensity anddestruction, however, hasbeen matched only by thegenerosity of the nearbyresidents and businesses whohave been coming by the co-
op’s common area to dropoff donations.
“Everyone is really blownaway by it,” Bennett said.“It’s heartwarming to thinkwhat a fabulous communitywe are blessed to live in. It’sreally hard. Even completestrangers show up.You say‘Thank you’ but it doesn’tseem enough.”
Residents in the co-op arerequired to have their owncontents insurance, thoughfor some families that’s notenough to cut it.
“Some of our membersare very, very low incomeand (have) very poorinsurance coverage,” Bennettsaid. “When somebody’sonly got $12,000 of livingexpenses, it’s not going tolast them very long.”
Co-op members are
trying to fundraise for thosepeople. BlueShore Financialhas set up a trust for theRiverWoods fire victims.Donations can be madeat the Parkgate branch orby phone for BlueShoremembers.
There is also aFacebook group,Community Support forRiver Woods HousingCo-operative, actingas a clearinghouse formatching residents’ needswith potential donors. AFundAid.ca crowdfundingcampaign has been createdto help raise money thefamilies as well. schools superintendent ChrisKennedy.
That’s especially impor-tant in an affluent commu-nity likeWestVan with plentyof competition from privateschools, he said. “When(parents) send their childrento public school, they’remaking a conscious effort toselect public education.”
Kennedy stressed whileit’s nice to be recognizedby the annual report card, the numbers put out by theFraser Institute only measureone piece of the learningthat happens in schools. “Ithink you have to be reallycareful in giving it too muchweight,” he said.
“I always encourageparents to go and visitschools” rather than lookat rankings, he said, addingthat conversations betweenparents on the soccer fieldare likely more importantin where families choose tosend their kids to school thanFraser Institute rankings.
Regardless of the reason, families from across theLower Mainland have beenattracted toWestVan publicschools. Of the approximate-ly 7,000 students enrolledinWestVan public schools,1,000 live outside the schooldistrict.
Private schools on theNorth Shore were wellrepresented at the top of theFraser Institute’s high schoolrankings. Collingwood wasthe highest-ranked school onthe North Shore followed byMulgrave and St.ThomasAquinas. Among the NorthShore’s public schools,Sentinel ranked highest, followed by Handsworth,Rockridge,Windsor andWestVancouver.
Rob Millard, president oftheWestVancouverTeachers’Association, said he doesn’tput any stock in the FraserInstitute rankings. Millardsaid public school teachersall do a good job of helpingthe wide variety of kids whoattend school to learn.
Peter Cowley, the report’sauthor, said the reportcard provides a reasonablemeasure of how schools aredoing academically.
WestVancouver SchoolDistrict has had to cut$330,000 from next year’sbudget as a result of “admin-istrative savings” demandedby the province.
Kennedy said that won’tmean layoffs but will meancutting back on specialprojects in the school district.
sightings of the Capilanocougar came from CanyonHeights resident CraigPamplin who met the cougaron the bike path in KlahaniePark on his daily commutehome from downtown onWednesday afternoon.
“I was riding my bikealong and I saw this cougarcome out of the bush andthen walk maybe 10 feettoward me on the bikepath,” he said. “I just kindof froze and got out mycamera.”
The cougar stayed about20 or 30 seconds beforecasually making its way backinto the bushes. Pamplinwarned two seniors comingdown the path as well as ayoung mother with a baby ina stroller.
“I said, ‘You might wantto rethink this and turnaround.’ She did,” he said.
Pamplin said he never feltat risk during the run-in.
“It didn’t even cross mymind until after, actually. Itwas not aggressive at all,” hesaid. “It was very shy andjust wanted to get out ofthere at that point.”
After learning the cougarhad been killed, Pamplin’scomment was simply thatit was a beautiful animalbut he understood why itneeded to be done.
Sightings of cougars indeveloped areas should bereported to the conservationofficer service at 1-877-952-7277.

Who’s sorrynow?W e all know the Internet is
a place that breeds badbehaviour.
So perhaps it’s no surprise that a vile“comedy” routine of shouting a sexist, degrading phrase at female reporterswhile they are live on air has been spreadthere.
This week, the tide turned whenreporter Shauna Hunt confronted agroup of these MENSA candidatesas they taunted her. Cameras rolling,Hunt told them how disrespectful anddemeaning it was. Then she posted it onsocial media.
Consequences for the now-outedNeanderthals have been swift.
One highly paid manager lost his job, which we applaud mainly because itspares his female co-workers from havingto share a workspace with his knuckle-
dragging misogyny.Good on Hunt for doing something to
make this behaviour stop. It’s a sad reflection on society that
grown men feel they can act this way inpublic with impunity.
These “pranks” target women withsexual vulgarities as they try to do theirjobs. The message is: “Your work doesn’tmatter.”The message is: “shut up.”
When Hunt didn’t turn the camerasoff, the men behind this stunt got a lessonthat should be obvious to anyone overthe age of 10: if you’re tempted to saysomething you wouldn’t want your bossor mother to hear, something that wouldout you as a misogynist jerk, don’t say itwhen the TV cameras are rolling.
Or better yet, put on your big boypants, check your moral compass anddon’t say it at all.

Dear Editor:Re: Affordable Housing
Warrants Attention, May 6Mailbox
I completely agree with(letter-writer)Yvette’scomments and views onthe development in LynnValley.
I have lived there withmy wife and four youngboys for the past eight
years and am disgustedwith how the district hashandled the developmentissues as well as the lack ofaffordable housing.
They continue to givepermits to have affordablehousing demolished tohave condos put up thatare completely out ofprice for myself and manyother members of the
community.When did the sense of
community and diversitygo out the door?
How am I to teachmy children to trust theelected officials that weas a community elected ifthey are not there for uswhen we need them?
I feel if the districthad been doing their job
for the members of thecommunity they shouldhave been on top of theproperty managementgroups to keep up theexterior of the (MountainCourt) building’sappearance.
Where are they forthe community? Whereare they for me and mychildren? Where are we
supposed to go if theycontinue to tear down allaffordable housing?
Does that teach mychildren we are no good tolive in North Vancouver?
I completely opposethis development and anyfurther development inLynn Valley.Wesley PiferNorth Vancouver

They occupy oppositepoints of the politicalspectrum, but I betPremier Christy Clark andnewly elected Premier-designate Rachel Notleywill get along just fine inthe years ahead.
But that’s not to say Clarkwon’t secretly hope thatNotley’s government falls flaton its face from time to time. That’s because any seriousmiscue by the Alberta NewDemocrats will reflectbadly on the B.C. NewDemocractic Party.
As a result, two yearsfrom now when B.C. votershead to the polls againPremier Christy Clark mayhave the perfect poster childto point to as an exampleof the bad things that canhappen when the NDP getsinto power.
And certainly the oddsfavour Notley looking at avery rocky road ahead.
While Notley establishedherself as a first-rate politicalcampaigner, almost allthe caucus members shehelped get elected havezero experience in runninggovernment at any leveland in fact lack experience
in pretty much of anythingother than teaching, nursingand social work.
And the circumstancesfor this untried and untestedyouthful gang of politicalnovices to take powercouldn’t be more daunting:government finances are interrible shape, the province’snumber one industry (oilextraction) is gasping for airand there is no relief in sight.
Some have comparedNotley’s electrifying winwith the historic victoryby Dave Barrett and theNDP in 1972, since bothtopped long-existingpolitical dynasties. But thecomparison ends there, since
Barrett’s caucus had a dozenseasoned MLAs and caucusmembers came from a widevariety of career vocations.
But a more aptcomparison for the Notleyneophytes is to the suddenrise of the B.C. Liberalsin the 1991 election.Theycame out of nowhere, atone point in the campaignthey were leading the polls, and on election day endedup forming the officialOpposition.
GordonWilson was theparty leader, but other thanhim and several other folks, the caucus was a collectionof inexperienced, politicallynaive and underwhelmingpeople who never dreamedthey had even a remotechance of ever being elected.
If the B.C. Liberals hadindeed formed governmentin 1991, the results wouldlikely have been disastrous,as the talent pool from whichto choose cabinet ministerswas very shallow indeed.
Notley may be facingprecisely the same situation. Her caucus consists ofpeople who likely neverthought they were going towin, since the party didn’t
begin its meteoric rise inthe polls until the campaignhad begun and candidateshad already secured theirnominations.
Aside from theinexperience problem, thereis the issue of the AlbertaNDP’s policy platform. Isuspect most voters’ intentwas focused on kicking outthe Progressive Conservativegovernment and saw theNDP as the best horse toride to accomplish that goal, and paid less attention towhat the NDP was actuallyproposing to do.
Notley has said she willraise corporate taxes byone-fifth, gradually raisethe minimum wage to $15an hour and likely raise oiland gas royalties, as well asconsider a new regulatoryregime for the oil industry.
Already, there are signsthe business community inAlberta is hyperventilating.
This is all well and goodfor those who hate thebusiness community or atleast the fossil fuel industry. But any fleeing of businessfrom Alberta means aneconomic downturn, andless government funding for
health care, education andsocial services (or highertaxes and/or debt).
Of course, B.C. wouldstand to benefit from anybusiness that relocates inthis province because ofa friendlier tax regime, something Clark will nodoubt seize upon for herpolitical advantage.
In the short term, how-ever, look for Clark and Not-ley to forge an alliance on anumber of issues. The newAlberta premier will likelysupport Clark’s five condi-tions when it comes to theapproval of pipelines runningthrough B.C., and the twowill probably work togetheron climate change issues.
Clark will also surely
exploit Notley’s support forthe Kinder Morgan pipeline, framing it against the B.C.NDP’s opposition to it. Sheknows that issue ties B.C.New Democrats up in knots.
Clark and Notley sharesimilar attributes. They areboth charismatic, positivewomen who exude an ener-getic and youthful outlookon things.Working togetheron key issues, they couldbe a potent force on thenational scene. Clark will bewishing her new colleagueall the best, but only up toa certain point, especially asthe next provincial electiondraws nearer.

“I think all of it (taxes) ismisspent on bureaucracy. Itwould be nice to see somethingmore beneficial.”
As the old adage goes, thereare two things certain inlife: death and taxes. NorthVancouver city residents willfeel the property tax pinchslightlymore than theirdistrict counterparts, withthis year’s fees increasingby 3.9 per cent and 2.5 percent respectively for thetwomunicipalities. Grad campaign targets superviseddrinking
TEREZAVERENCAnewsroom@nsnews.com
North Shore parentsare once again beingencouraged to think twicebefore supplying their kidswith booze.
Wednesday marked thelaunch of the annual “ThinkBeforeYou LetThem Drink”campaign, an awarenessinitiative supported byVancouver Coastal Health, police, educators and theSquamish Nation.
“We know that morethan half of high schoolstudents on the North Shorehave tried alcohol,” said theNorth Shore’s chief medicalhealth officer, Dr. MarkLysyshyn. “Although thisrate has decreased over thepast few years, it’s actuallyhigher than the provincialrate.”
He added students onthis side of the Lions GateBridge drink in “risky ways,”often consuming four orfive drinks within a couplehours.
“Not surprisingly then, over half of North Shorestudents who have used
alcohol have admittedto experiencing negativeconsequences, like forgettingwhat happened the nightbefore, passing out and
getting injured,” Lysyshynexplained.
To curb these behaviours, parents should be havingconversations with their
teens early on, according toKerrieWatt, an alcohol anddrug prevention educatorwithVancouver CoastalHealth.
“We don’t let 12-year-olds drive cars and we arestill able to teach themand have them appreciatethe safety that is around
vehicles,” she said. “Sowhy can’t we do that fora substance like alcohol, meant for adults?”
Watt added, when talkingto teens, it’s importantparents acknowledge thattarget advertising works, andthat making them criticalthinkers can counter that.Even monitoring how muchalcohol mom and dad drinkat the dinner table can help.
Local law enforcement, meanwhile, told the NorthShore News liquor actviolations related to minorsbeing in possession of boozeare low. Not because it’snot happening, but becauseit’s the last thing an officeris thinking about whenresponding to an under-age party, according to JeffPalmer, spokesman fortheWestVancouver PoliceDepartment.
“We have to prioritizeon safety issues and we’reusually engaged in anemergency response to a kidwho may need to go to thehospital,” he said.
The fine for buyingalcohol for a minor is $500,while teens caught with thesubstance can be fined $230.
The “Think BeforeYouLetThem Drink” campaignwas launched in conjunctionwith grad season and B.C.YouthWeek.

We had an early leap into summer movie-going with the release of Avengers:Age ofUltron last week, the first blockbuster ofmany rolling out in the next few months.Theforecast? It’s all about teamwork for our movieheroes, whether they’re singing, stripping, orsaving the world; there’s safety (and box-officedollars) in numbers. Here’s your guide to someof the juiciest picks of the season.
MAYPitch Perfect 2The Barden Bellas are looking for a repeat of theira cappella awesomeness, despite their overall teamweirdness. Starring Anna Kendrick, RebelWilson,Brittany Snow. From director Elizabeth Banks.
Mad Max:Fury RoadA RoadWarrior (Tom Hardy) determined tosurvive alone comes to the aid of a group ofescaped captive women (CharlizeTheron amongthem) trying to cross theWasteland and outrun a
gang in this high-action, high-body-count post-apocalyptic thriller from George Miller, brainchildof all the Mad Max films.
TomorrowlandThere’s another world out there, according todirector Brad Bird, and it’s up to a troubledteenage girl (Britt Robertson) and a secretiveinventor (George Clooney) to make sense of it all.Screenplay by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof.
San AndreasAs if you needed reminding thatVancouver issmack on a fault line, but here’s search-and-rescuehelicopter pilot Dwayne Johnson trying to pickup the pieces in L.A. and find his daughter after agiant quake hits.
JUNEEntourageWe’ve been watching Jeremy Piven in period-wearfor too long (in Mr.Selfridge); it’s time for the actorto wriggle back into those overpriced designersuits. A-list starVincent Chase (Adrian Grenier)and his posse reunite to try and getVince’s

Prestige Guitars travel around the world
Magic onMain StreetMARIA SPITALE-LEISKmspitale-leisk@nsnews.com
Inside a guitar shopplanted in an industrial-commercial corridoron North Vancouver’sMain Street there is anintimate connection toa bevy of world-famousmusicians from Slash toShania Twain.
You would be forgivenfor not being familiarwith Prestige Guitars, asthe brand has surged in
popularity primarily southof the 49th parallel.
“Even in our backyardpeople come into our storeand go: ‘Prestige, is thata brand?’” says PrestigeGuitars proprietor MichaelKurkdjian.
Yet the custom-made axes and acousticsfashioned from B.C.-raisedtrees — maple varieties, spruce and cedar — areconceived and masterfullybuilt in the back of theMain Street guitar shop
and then shipped to the farreaches of the world.
“Our most exotic(shipping) location is goingto be the South Americas,of course,” revealsKurkdjian.
What started as humblebeginnings in Burnabyin 2003 has grown intoa bustling businessfor Prestige — whichtoday produces about ahundred guitars a month, destined for the hands ofmainstream artists and
music enthusiasts alike.The craftsmanship
Prestige puts into theguitars, right down to theinlay work handcraftedout of mother-of-pearland sparkling abalone, hasafforded the brand someendorsement from musicindustry heavyweights andsome hardware from theGuitar World magazineawards.
Kurkdjian singles outTwain as being the biggestartist to strum a Prestige
semi-hollow, and recallsseeing one of his acousticsfront and centre duringthe country star’s series oftelevised heart-to-heartswith Oprah last year.
“It was pretty exciting, people were noticing ouracoustics more (after theOprah interviews),” saysKurkdjian, adding it’s anhonour to having someoneof Twain’s stature playing aPrestige.
On the electric side, former lead Guns N’ Roses
guitarist Slash and hiscurrent bandmates rockout on Prestige guitarswhile on tour and in thestudio.
In fact, Slash hascommissioned Prestige tocustomize an electric axefor him. A luthier will startwith Prestige’s “heritagestandard” solid bodydesign and add a blackmatte finish adorned withtattoo-like drawings.

MUSIC
“It’s a guitar thatyou would picture Slashplaying, actually,” chucklesKurkdjian.
Legendary guitarist JoeWalsh, of Eagles fame, hasalso picked up a Prestigeaxe, along with musiciansfrom the Matthew GoodBand and Wide MouthMason. And in February, guitarist Will Evankovichjoined the Prestige club.
Evankovich had thisto say about his newPrestige Heritage HollowTR: “Plays like a dream, sings like a bird, and isas stunning as a supermodel.”
The guitar-makingmagic, or “cool things” asKurkdjian puts it, happensinside a 2,000-square-footworkspace at Prestige’sMain Street headquarters. The process starts with rawwood bought in Chilliwack, which is then shippedto South Korea where itis manufactured usingmachines before being sentback to North Van for thewiring and final assembly.
“And so we get thenaked guitars and continuebuilding them in our backroom,” explains Kurkdjian.
Music enthusiasts canstop by the store andwatch the luthiers worktheir magic in the back,fine-tuning a new guitar— or peruse the finishedproducts gleaming fromtheir racks in a handsomelyappointed showroomcomplete with a grand
chandelier. There is also aspecial room in the back, called the vault, whereiconic Gibson guitars fromthe ’50s and ’60s are ondisplay.
A little known secretis some of these majorrecording artists that arePrestige’s clients haverandomly stopped by thestore in recent monthsand put on free, intimateand interactive shows forwhoever showed up. GunsN’ Roses guitarist Ron“Bumblefoot”Thal, MattGood, and the guys fromSlash, have all put in anappearance at Prestige.
Given the musicians’hectic schedule, Prestigecan’t announce the showsin advance. However, anyone that is interested
in seeing these world-classguitarists up close andpersonal should subscribeto Prestige’s Facebook pagefor the latest news, saysKurkdjian, who promisesthe shows don’t disappoint.
“Oh yeah, anytime wehost one of these events,it’s quite the party for us,”he attests.
Kurkdjian has comea long way since cuttinghis teeth in the ’90s withVancouver-based guitarmaker Larrivée. As a 21-year-old luthier apprentice,he learned how differenttypes and densities ofwood create unique tonalcharacteristics: guitarsmade from maple trees, forexample, create a brighter,chime-ier sound, whilerosewood has a deeper
tone.Kurkdjian’s music roots
can be traced back to whenhe was a teenager living inNorth Van. One Christmasbreak, the then CarsonGraham secondary studenttook a job at a second-handguitar shop.
“At the end of it, (theowner) gave me 400 bucksand I turned around andbought a guitar and amp— and never looked back,”recalls Kurkdjian.
These days, the dadplays more “Baby Beluga”than the blues, but still“whips out the electricguitar every now andagain.”
Prestige Guitars islocated at 1332 MainStreet, and online atprestigeguitars.com.

Vancouver hometo a special esthetic■ TheWest Coast ModernHouse:VancouverResidential Architecture.Edited by Greg Bellerbywith contributions fromJanaTyner and ChrisMacDonald.(Figure 1 Publishing).
JOHNGOODMANjgoodman@nsnews.com
TheWest CoastModern House chartsthe development ofresidentialVancouverarchitecture from thepost-war period throughto contemporary practice.
The book features over50 homes designed byseminalWest Coast architectssuch as RonThom,ArthurErickson, Barry Downsand Fred Hollingsworth.Greg Bellerby, a curator andgallery director for over 30years, spoke to the NorthShore News about the study.
North Shore News:In West Coast Modern Houseyou have a poster of RichardNeutra visitingVancouver.Architect Barry Downsspecifically mentions himas an early influence in thedevelopment of landscapearchitecture.Greg Bellerby:When Richard Neutralectured here in the ’40she really exposed a lotof architects to the idea
of modernism and theintegration of indoor andoutdoor spaces. He wasdefinitely a big influence.
North Shore News:TheNeutra poster was made byGordon Smith. FascinatingVancouver history in itself. What sort of research wasinvolved in putting togetherWest Coast Modern House?Greg Bellerby: Basically itdealt with looking at whatwas published at the timeabout modernist houses. In particular there weremaybe two or three sourcesthat they came from. Onewas the Royal ArchitecturalInstitute of Canada Journaland they were one of the firstpublications to really look atmodernism. They spent a lotof attention onVancouver andwhat was going on here.

BOOKS
essay that was written byNed Pratt in 1947 and ittalks about contemporaryarchitecture in BritishColumbia. It really sort oflays out what isWest Coastarchitecture or the idea of theWest Coast style. He cites theenvironment, the weather, thelight, the amount of rain weget, and how to deal with that, and also the idea of the postand beam house — that reallybecame the iconic image ofWest Coast houses.
This article came outin the journal and over theyears there were a numberof other articles that talkedabout the idea of post andbeam and alsoWest Coastarchitecture. RonThomwrote an essay that waspublished in the journal inthe early ’50s.The other greatsource wasWestern Homesand Living magazine whichnow is just calledWesternLiving. It was first publishedin 1950 and featured a lotof new, modernist homes. It did articles about themand the architects andeven about the people whohad commissioned these
houses. It’s still publishingtoday in a different sort offormat but a lot of thoseearly magazines were a greatsource of material. House andGarden, Canadian Architecthad articles as well. I alsodid personal interviews withBarry Downs and a couple ofthe photographers who tookphotographs at the time.
North Shore News:Wheredid the Gordon Smith postercome from?Greg Bellerby: Thatcame from a collection outat UBC from the BelkinGallery. They have quite anextensive archive and theirposter was in their collectionat UBC.
North Shore News: JanaTyler’s essay deals withlandscape architecture andits significance inVancouver. That seems to have played arole in the development of aWest Coast esthetic.
Greg Bellerby:Landscape architecturedoesn’t get a lot of publicityor space in the literatureso we thought it would beinteresting to include it.The idea behind theWestCoast Modern House isthe integration betweenthe outdoor and the indoorand the landscape aroundthe house was almost asimportant as the house itself.Richard Neutra and otherpeople put forward this ideathat you should not just plopdown a house but integrate itinto the landscape.
Some of the earlyarchitects like Ned Pratt,Fred Hollingsworth and RonThom would also do thelandscaping and recommendcertain plantings and site thehouse specific to the lot. Inthe post-war period therewasn’t really a school oflandscape architecture.Therewere a few people that cameand started working with
architects. Robillard was oneof them who started offeringservices as a landscaper anda landscape architect. It wassomething that developedslowly in the post-warperiod but it became equallyimportant.
North Shore News: ChrisMacDonald’s essay, “TheNext Modern House”specifically mentions theSmith houses and the Downshouses in the context of thedevelopment ofWest CoastModernism.Greg Bellerby: In boththose examples there weretwo of them and so helooks at how design hadchanged.Arthur Ericksonwho designed both the Smithhouses looked at both thosesites very carefully. One isforested and just hoversabove the landscape.
The second house sortof bridged natural rockoutcroppings so againthe house was very muchintegrated into the landscape. And Barry’s houses insouthVancouver and on acliff inWestVancouver gotvery different treatmentsbut with same intent and
conscientiousness aboutmaterials and how the housewould function within thelandscape. Chris’ idea wasvery much about making thecomparison over time.
North Shore News: Intoday’s terms the houses arequite small but they are builtin spectacular locations.Greg Bellerby: Yes inVancouver we’re veryfortunate to have thesespectacular sites for thesehouses with the beautifuloutviews to English Bay orHowe Sound. In the housesthat are situated in really flatspaces the gardens becamethe views in a sense andplayed an important part inthe house.
North Shore News: Yourintroductory essay outlinesthe history of modernismin residential architecture.West Coast Modernism wasinfluenced from elsewherebut developed in specificcontext so it was reallylike a homegrown, organicdevelopment.Greg Bellerby: I did aprevious book, West CoastResidential, and it looked
at a mid-century modernhouse and a contemporaryhouse from five cities:Vancouver, Seattle, Portland,San Francisco and L.A.There was what I call acommunication that wentup and down theWest Coastfrom Los Angeles through toVancouver. Richard Neutracame up to lecture, FredHollingsworth and RonThom went down to thecoast to San Francisco andL.A. and visited architectsand brought back people.Barry Downs studied inWashington State,ArthurErickson taught in Portland.
There was a lot ofinfluence up and down theWest Coast. It really reflects areal uniqueWest Coast styleandWest Coast approach tohouses.Vancouver had itsown particular version of thatbecause of our accessibilityto great timber, fir, cedarwhich was readily availableand relatively cheap so thatbecame the material whereasin southern California it wasmore concrete and steel. There’s a real relationshipbetween what went onesthetically in L.A. andVancouver.

Building a project that’s right for Squamish. That’s our number one priority.
Community InvolvementIMPORTANT TO YOU. IMPORTANT TO US.
We want you to help us build a project that’s rightfor Squamish, and right for BC.
John French has lived in Squamish his entire life, so heknows that to bring new economic opportunity to theregion we must work closely with the community. In fact, that’s what attracted John to Woodfibre LNG – he sees howWoodfibre is listening to people in the community and isacting on their priorities.
ConsultingWith The CommunityAt Woodfibre LNG, we always welcome your questions andcomments. We’re nearing the end of our third round of formalpublic consultation, have held more than 300 communitymeetings, hosted two telephone town halls, and opened ourdoors in Squamish. To keep the conversation going, we’vealso launched our YouTube Channel and question and answerwebsite, askwoodfibrelng.ca.
Protecting Howe SoundProtecting the environment and Howe Sound is a priority. That’swhy we are continuing to clean up the Woodfibre site, like ourplan to remove 3,000 creosote-coated piles from the waterfront, which will provide a better habitat for fish. This is just part of ourcommitment to protecting Howe Sound.
Listening On Electric PowerWe heard that reducing air emissions is important to you, soearly on we committed to powering our plant using electricityfrom BC Hydro. This decision will reduce greenhouse gasemissions by about 80 per cent when compared to burninggas, and will help make Woodfibre one of the cleanest LNGplants in the world.
Investing In The CommunityWe are already providing financial support to youth sports andeducation programs, as well as community events and otherlocal groups through our Community Sponsorship Program. Asa proud contributor to a vibrant Squamish, we look forward tobringing responsible economic development to the communitythrough local jobs, contracts and other contributions.

LOOK YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to FASHION & STYLE
BOOKSIcons ofWomen’s Style
by Josh Sims.page 32
FashionFileFestival frocks in fashionDear Mattie:
What styles of dresses are infashion?Tired of black in Lonsdale
Dear Lonsdale:This season dresses are all
the rage! They are wearablepieces that are modern andtrendy. There is an opportunityfor personal flare as there areso many colours and patternsto choose from. It is definitely adress season.
Everywhere you turn you willsee ladies wearing dresses.Thetwo trendiest styles are the modlook and the music festival look. The mod look is derived frompatterns and silhouettes fromthe 1960s and ’70s, but it is nota retro look. The music festivallook is inspired by the CoachellaValley Music and Arts Festival. Both are fun trends that can becasual or professional.
The mod dress features afit-and-flare cut. There is acinched waist created by theseams and hem lengths fall to theknee. Belts are popular with thissilhouette. This look resembles auniform, but with so much morestyle. The mod look incorporatesgreat colours with great patterns. It is a bold presentation.Thisstyle of dress can also be onecolour or a monochromatictone-on-tone colour scheme for amore conservative look. Althoughthe silhouette may be subtle, thecolours and patterns are whatmake the statement.
The music festival look isloose and long. This is a fluidand lean look, not a messy one.Although these dresses can havemany patterns and colours, staying within a theme or familyof colours enhances the lean andfluid silhouette. Layering piecesunder and over this style of dresscan create a variety of statements. This is more than a summerhippie look. By adding piecesto this dress you can createwhatever look fits your lifestyleneeds.
The patterns on the dressesare what make this season soexciting. There are geometricand floral patterns.Geometric patterns includechevron, gingham, vertical andhorizontal stripes. The stripesare modern in that they resemblea bar code. Some of the lines areoversized, creating an abstractlook.
Florals are a traditionallook, but today’s dresses arenot traditional. The prints areexpressive, not passive. Someare exaggerated and repeatedto create a new pattern. Apattern might be spliced to looksomewhat striped and someflorals are being digitized tolook more modern. A mash-upof prints is the biggest trendin patterns this season. It is asthough a traditional image ismulti-tasking to create an ultra-modern look.
Fabrics make a statementwith dresses. The mod lookhas a cotton, twill or linentexture. This creates itstailored silhouette.Thefestival look has a lighter, gauzy, airy feel that createsa fluid silhouette. Some newfabrics to look for are mid-wash denim. The zipper is avisible detail that creates atrendy vintage look. Lightweightfabrics can be layered with 3Dappliques to add dimension toyour style. Eyelet dresses andlace trims in many colours addfashionable flair without lookingtoo feminine.

Legendary designs live onBooks
Icons of Women’s Styleby Josh Sims (LaurenceKing Publishers, 207 pages)$40.95
TERRYPETERStpeters@nsnews.com
Fashion is the sum ofthe collective input ofdesigners.
It is the invention andreinvention of conceptsfrom across the decadesthat fuel the multi-billion-dollar industry. There aresome designs that becomeicons and within everywoman’s closet are clothesthat have been influencedby them.
Author Josh Simslooks at style icons from
all aspects of fashion anddivides the chapters intospecific items includingouterwear, skirts, dresses, trousers, tops, underwear, leisure and swimwear,
shoes and finallyaccessories. In each sectionSims presents significantdesigns that influencedthe fashion of the day andin most cases many of thedesigners who followed.
Photographs andillustrations fill the pageswith examples of eachitem. Sims explains thecreation of the design andits impact as well as thepublic response at the time, which in some cases wasfar different than the lateropinions. Models, actressesand celebrities appear inthe best examples, suchas Twiggy in a miniskirt,Audrey Hepburn wearinga little black dress, or KateMiddleton in a trench coat.

■ Mad Max:Fury Road.Directed by GeorgeMiller. Starring CharlizeTheron andTom Hardy.Rating: 9 (out of 10)
JULIECRAWFORDContributingWriter
I just saw Mad Max:Fury Road and I intendto sleep like a baby. Why? Because Mad Maxcreator-director GeorgeMiller has transcribedmy worst nightmaresonto the big screen andpurged me of the need tocreate them myself.
You know that nightmarewhere not a lot happens,story-wise, but you’re beingchased for the duration byagile, acrobatic and reallyangry Cirque du Soleilperformers on PCP withthe milky-white complexionof a Brit boy-band?Thesepale byproducts of theapocalypse are called “warboys” and their opening warchant sounds just like “WildBoys” by Duran Duran (anightmare in itself).
Where your name isFuriosa and you’re escapingfrom pure evil across an
infinite desert with a posseof beautiful women (RosieHuntington-Whiteley, ZoeKravitz et al) but someonehas shaved your head andstolen all your makeup, but it’s OK because you’reCharlizeTheron and all youhave to do is rub axle greaseall over your face and you
look awesome?And there’s a hot guy in
your nightmare named Max(Tom Hardy, living everyboy’s dream) who comes toyour rescue — when you’renot saving him from hishellacious flashbacks — andyou say little but tussle a lotand you’d really like to kiss
him, but he spends the firstfew scenes wearing an ironchastity belt on his face.
You know the dream:where the leader of the freakschasing you looks like oldAnthony Hopkins in Legendsof the Fall, or David Crosbycrossed with a rabid dog, andthis man-beast with rotting
skin and no mouth wantsyou back in one piece so hecan breed with you? (HughKeays-Byrne, of the originalMad Max). There’s morethan one group in pursuit:there are People Eaters andBullet Farmers, marauding

Furiosa shares equal billingwithMadMax
bands from every corner ofpoisoned earth, each with hisown brand of mayhem andnuclear-fallout deformity.
Where the monstertrucks pursuing youthrough desert, quagmireand epic sandstorms aretruly monstrous: they spewflames, grind metal, launch
harpoons and occasionallyresemble mammoth toxic-waste porcupines. Andleading the hellish convoy’scharge into battle is not alone bagpiper but a heavy-metal guitar-playing humanpuppet on strings (musiccourtesy of DutchmanJunkie XL), whose guitarhead, like everything else inyour dream, vomits fire at
opportune moments.And this isn’t only
my nightmare: if you’re amisogynist — or a memberof the Duggar family— you’ll be horrified thatFuriosa shares equal billingwith Max in the kick-assdepartment, and that theonly people left with a lickof sense in this poisoned,post-apocalyptic world are
a tribe comprising onlywomen, and they hold thekey to future civilization.
Relentless, visceralaction, restrained acting, astounding detail incostuming, makeup andproduction design. It alladds up to one hell ofa ride.Thank you, Mr.Miller, for a beautifulnightmare.

Ever feel like you’re beingbombarded with choices? No?Then just walk downthe snack food aisle in anymajor supermarket — orgo shopping for a sportscar.
Anyone who gripesabout the golden days ofperformance or who wishesmanufacturers paid moreattention to the enthusiastmarket simply isn’t payingattention. We are up to
our eyeballs in smart littlesportsters, and for theNissan Z, that’s a really bigproblem.
When the 240Z cameout, it didn’t really havemuch direct competition.Sure there were Mustangsand Camaros to contendwith, but the Z was moreof a corner carver. It was areliable E-Type Jaguar forthe everyman.
The modern Z, on the
other hand, is quite anexpensive car, and thus it’shard to make a case for itas a value-priced everydaydriver. And the marketthese days, as mentioned, iscrammed with everythingfromV-6 Hyundai Coupesto Ecoboost Mustangs.
But what’s this? A 370Zfor less than $30,000? Clothseats, 300 horsepower, rear-wheel drive and a stick shift?Maybe it’s time to pop this
box off the shelf and givethe Z a second look.
DesignAs a car that’s been
on the market for severalyears, the 370Z has agedwell. Actually, accordingto multiple passers-by, it’saged extremely well. At leastonce a day, the Z received acompliment, a gaze, a hoot

TODAY’SDRIVE
Compact 370Zworksas an everydaydriverof admiration.
You can see why.Whilenot as pretty as the original— and few cars are — the370Z manages to be allhunched, muscular fury, yet still retains a non-threatening face. It’s abit fishy looking and veryJapanese, but it looks greatwith LED running lightsand those big 18-inch alloysfilling the wheelwells.
It’s also fairly compact, something that’s not reallyapparent until you parkit next to an old AcuraIntegra or similar. This is aproper-scale sports car, notoversized at all.
EnvironmentThis being a base model,
the Z doesn’t exactlyimpress on the inside. If
anything, it reminds me of aScion FR-S. But then again, those two cars are fairlyclose in price now.
With that in mind, thebasic Z has everythinga driver needs, and fewdistractions. Some featuresare a bit goofy, like the extradials on the dashboard thatdisplay less-than-relevantinformation like batteryvoltage, but the seats aregrippy and comfortable andthe entire instrument clustermoves with the steeringwheel.
Rear trunk space issurprisingly good, thanks tothe opening hatch. The old350Z was pretty cramped, limited by a huge strut-tower bar that blocked golfclubs and the like.This370Z’s a lot more liveable, and while I wouldn’trecommend one to an
NHL goalie for equipmenthauling duties, it wouldwork as an everyday car.
PerformanceThe 370Z is old
enough to rememberwhen the badge on theback of a car actually hadsomething to do with enginedisplacement. Under thenose is a 3.7-litreV-6 thatmakes 332 h.p. at 7,000r.p.m. and 270 foot-poundsof torque at 5,200 r.p.m.
That’s a healthy amountof scoot, and it becomesdoubly impressive whenyou consider the price pointis within $500 of a basicMazda MX-5. Suddenlyleather seats and satellitenavigation just look like fatto be trimmed — for thiskind of money, the Z is all

TODAY’SDRIVE
there’s joy to be found inthoroughly stirring up thesix-speed transmission andmaking the ‘6 howl.
Cornering isn’t artificialeither — fire the Z througha couple of backroadbends and its low seatingposition and driver-centredpivot point give a greatersensation of speed.Thesteering is great, analog feelin an age of numb electricpower-assist.
In short, the 370Z hasaged, yes, but everythingthat’s old about it isthe good stuff. We canlive without updated
infotainment when the rawentertainment is this good.
FeaturesEquipped with
Bluetooth hands-freeas standard and USBconnectivity, the Z has thebasics covered. You mightnot actually need anythingelse. The only thing tobe wished for is a properlimited-slip differential, which doesn’t come onthis $29,998 based model, requiring a huge jump tothe nearly-$40K Touring. However, you could alwaysopt for an aftermarketsolution.
Fuel economy is prettyaverage for a V6-poweredcoupe. Official ratings arepegged at 13.3 (litres/100kilometres) city and 9.2on the highway. Mixed-use driving netted around10-11, depending on how
hard one dipped into thethrottle.
Green lightStyling ages well; raw,
focused performance;excellent performance value.
Stop signVisibility isn’t great;
interior very basic; limitedyear-round practicality.
The checkered flagA deep price cut slashes
the fat off Nissan’s sportscar and reveals the essenceof what made it great.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe($29,499)
Often overlooked asa performance bargain,Hyundai’s Genesis coupegives youV-6 power (348h.p.), usable back seats forkids, a reasonable trunk, thelimited-slip diff you don’t
get on the base Z, and evenBrembo brakes. Hyundaiturfed their turbo modeland went allV-6 for theGenesis Coupe lineup, but
that’s a heck of a deal in thebase car.
It’s a bigger car thanthe Z, maybe a little lessfocused and more dual-duty
for the family man. Still, though, that’s a compellingprice for a whole range ofperformance goodies.mcaleeronwheels@gmail.com
Death of sports cars greatly exaggerated
