Introduction.

The NMB clinical rotation is an important part of NSU College of Dental Medicine

This clinical rotation is designed in accordance with the established Comprehensive care and Team leader model

D4s students are assigned one day per week through the entire year.

Goals

To provide the students with learning experiences that include the following:

1- Screenings, emergency care and treatment planning2- Preventive and Restorative procedures3- Fixed and removable prosthodontics4- Endodontics5- Periodontics6- Oral Surgery7- Patient management8- Cultural competency

Our clinic serves patients from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

Our concept for this rotation is to provide our students with experiences that attempt to “simulate” a private practice setting but keeping our college’s standards and existing protocols.

During the last site visit from CODA our clinic was visited and the results were satisfactory

General PoliciesI-Attendance

Attendance is mandatory .All absences must be accompanied by written documentation.

For excused absences give at least three weeks notice.Notify the NMB Clinic Director and communicated to your PMC

PATIENT ASSIGNMENTS

1- At the beginning of the program, each student will be assigned patients based on the students’ needs, patients’ needs and level of case difficulty. IT IS THE GOAL OF THIS ROTATION FOR THE STUDENTS TO COMPLETE AS MANY CASES AS POSSIBLE.2- Student will be assigned a PMC and must meet with the PMC on a monthly basis for patient family reviews

PATIENT ASSIGNMENTS

1- All of you will meet with your team leaders once you get your patients assigned. Patients who are currently in active treatment will remain with the same team leader who supervised previous treatment plans.

3- Students cannot transfer cases or procedures to another student without the approval of the NMB Clinic

Director. Procedures transfer are not normally approved.

However,Complete case transfers are allowed and

must be approved by the NMB Director. Also, transfers from or to any other program or department must be approved by the Clinic Director

4- Students are responsible that all clinical records are kept up to date as well as patients are receiving appropriate scheduled recare appointments.

5-Students and Team leaders will meet on a regular basis to review their patient families and progress of cases. We believe that the Small Group Learning model of teaching can be applied efficiently in our clinic. We also hope that total engagement between Team leaders and students in this process is achieved in order to increase the efficiency in patient care and student learning opportunities.

Patient appointments

1- All patients’ appointments WILL be made by the student.2- At the conclusion of each appointment, students should plan patient’s next appointment and3-Request or schedule patient’s appointment in AxiUm.

If you are not going to be present in clinic on a certain day notify your PMC in advance. Once you have the approval from the Clinic Director and Dr. Brodie.

If your schedule has openings 48 hours before your next scheduled date, they will be filled either with patients from your family, emergencies, or screening and data collection appointments. If your patient cancels or does not show, we are going to try to fill your schedule. If this is not possible either your Team leader or your PMC will try to find another assignment for you.

Endo CoverageO We have endo coverage on:

Mondays PM Tuesdays AM Thursdays AM Fridays AMThere is a Sign in sheet for Endo. Every student who has an endo procedure planned should put her/his name on the list and it has a maximum of 4 cases per session.

Perio Coverage

We provide perio coverage and this year we will have a perio resident rotating in our clinic to help us in certain procedures.Your perio faculty will go over protocols later today.

Prosth proceduresO Removable and Fixed.Dr. Pereira will go over protocols after this presentation

RestorativeO Restorative ICPAs

This year:O When you don’t have patients you

can use your time assisting your classmates during clinic time. This assisting sessions will count towards your required sessions as part of the DAU course.

O This is not completely developed yet but information will be provided once we are ready to start.

Use your time wisely!!!

Do not book a three hour appointment for procedures that would require less time.A prophy or a one surface restoration will not require three hours to be completed.Concentrate in quadrant dentistry if it is possible.

Patient financials

1- NMB is a fee for service clinic.2- All patients are expected to pay in full at each visit. Discuss with your patient and remind them that payment is due in full at each visit.3- If you plan to perform an additional procedure that was not planned the amount due needs to be paid too.

Direct any financial concerns with the Office Manager.

Any modifications, patients credits, adjustments can only be made by the Director of Clinics. Dr. Haas.Once we detect the need of an adjustment1- student will fill out the Adjustment Form 2- the clinic director will review it and submit for final approval.
