Blog Week 3- 4SE

• I was at 4 SE this week.  I followed a nurse around and watched her put different IV's on patients.  She also gave medicine to her patients and checked up on them regularly.  Several patients I observed had strokes and one patient's heart wasn't beating right.  The first day she gave this patient blood through an IV.

Blog Week 5- Laboratory

• This week I was in the Laboratory.  The first day I went around with a nurse and saw her take blood from patients so they could observe the blood to see what is wrong with the patient.  The second day I went around and tourned the Lab.  I learned about what they do in the Lab and what they observe.

Blog Week 6- General Surgery

• This week I was at General Surgery.  The nurse I followed on the first day basically just checked up on patients and gave them medicine.  The second day was more interesting.  One of the patients I saw had pus on her stomach.  She had one whole in her stomach already where they put a sponge, and when I was there they were working on taking the pus out from another spot on her stomach.  It seemed like the lady was in alot of pain.  There was also a lot of excitement in one room.  One of the nurses smelt smoke, so she went into the room and found one of her patients smoking.  Everyone was scared, especially his roomate because they were afraid that the place was going to blow up becuase he had oxygen on and oxygen and smoke do not work well together!  He would not give his cigarettes and lighter to the nurse, so security had to come and get them from the man.

Blog Week 8- Cath Lab

• This week I was in the Cath Lab.  It was pretty interesting.  The 1st day was more interesting than the 2nd day because I saw the same thing both days.  They were checking their patients to see if they had any blockage in their heart anywhere.  The first patient I saw just had a little blockage in her heart, so she didn't need to have surgery, but the second patient that came in was an emergency patient and had total blockage in his heart.

Blog Week 9- Radiology• Week 9 I was in the Radiology

department.  Both days I ended up in the CT part of the Radiology department.  There wasn't very much going on either day.  I basically just sat there becuase there was not very many patients that had a CT scan.  The first day there was a patient that was having her stomach aired up, but that was basically the most

interesting part of this rotation.

Practice• Some of the different required classes you

have to take before you get into Medical School are English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. After you take these perquisite classes, you apply to get into Medical School. It takes four years in Medical School and everyone takes the same four years in Medical School no matter what degree you plan on going into. After Medical School, the students have 2-3 years of residency. Residency is when they work with other doctors. The final training to become a doctor is to split up into whatever field you want to go into and practice the different procedures a doctor does.

• The shifts are usually 12 hr. days in the medical field, but you usually only work three days

Professional SpeakersClint Stucky- Occupational

• Occupational therapists make about $70,000 a year

Future Plans

• Following my graduation at Bishop Carroll, I plan to attend Pitt State, then go to either Wichita State University or the University of Kansas to get a degree in Physical Therapy.

Final Reflection

• This class has aided me in my career decision through the different rotations I have been on.

• I am glad I have been able to experience all the things this program has to offer
