Short History Haiti is a country on the island of Hispaniola in

the Caribbean Sea. Hispaniola has two countries. Haiti makes up roughly the western 1/3 of the island. The Dominican Republic makes up the eastern 2/3 of the island.

Christopher Columbus arrived in what is now

Haiti in 1492. In 1697, the French took control. They brought African slaves to work on their large farms. In the late 1700's, the slaves rebelled. They fought for and won independence for Haiti in 1804.

Continue…After a period with many revolutions and

counter-revolutions, US President Woodrow Wilson ordered his Marines to restore order in Haiti in 1915. The United States supervised presidential elections and in effect took control of the country. It was only until 1934 that US Marines left Haiti, but the country's finances would remain under American control until 1947.
