Business and Industry
22experiencenew

Business and industry in Newton can be tracedback to 1893 when Fred L. Maytag and a group ofentrepreneurs went into business producing a saferthreshing machine feeder. By 1902, the companywas the largest feeder manufacturer in the world. In 1905, manufacturing expanded to includeautomobiles, corn huskers and, eventually, washingmachines. At its peak in the mid-1900s, MaytagCorporation employed more 3,500 people locallyand more than 29,000 worldwide.
On March 29, 2006, federal regulators approvedthe sale of Maytag to Whirlpool Corporation.Shortly thereafter, Whirlpool announced the closingof the Maytag Corporate Headquarters, resulting in
a complete pullout of a Maytag/Whirlpool presencein Newton. Change had come to town.
But that change did not have to mean defeat. Withassistance from federal, state and localgovernments, Newton community leaders andcitizens went to work to attract new businesses andindustry to Newton.
On Sept. 15, 2006, the first race was held at thenew $70 million Iowa Speedway, a 7/8th-mile trackdesigned by former NASCAR Champion RustyWallace. In 2009 and 2010, the Iowa Speedwayattracted more than 260,000 racing fans to theirevents.
