A big thank you to Saji Verghese and the Sangamam Subcommittee for working tirelessly to mobilize such a big crowd and generate the necessary funds. I also sincerely thank all the financial sponsors of this program specially the main spon-sor ‘Spice Route Australia’. ONAM 2008 is just a couple of weeks away. Keeping in mind the sweet memories of ONAM that we’ve had in the past years, we will be celebrating it on 20th September with a variety of cultural programs and our partici-pants are all set to perform for us. I thank and appreciate all those who have willingly agreed to volunteer vari-ous duties and are finding time and effort to make our ONAM program a grand success. Adelaide Metropolitan Malayalee Association’s Annual Generalbody meeting was held on 26 July. The meeting was attended by around 350 members including many new families. This attendance showed that the members are closely monitoring the administration and want to have their say in all issues. AGM started with President’s report by Biju Joseph on overall performance followed by Treasurers report by Joy Mathew. President’s report detailed the growing number of programs undertaken by AMMA for the benefit of community and overall growth of the association over last year. Treasurer’s report was pleasing as the members can find the association is getting financially stable. The night was spectacular with the outstanding performance from the talents in our community. Most importantly it was an opportunity for the community members to meet each other and welcome new members into closely knit malayalee community.

EDITORIAL
Dear readers, Are we ready for another Onam? Onam, the festival of flowers, an annual celebration of the sprit of Mahabali’s reign of justice, will continue to inspire us to strive for that Golden Mean. – Equality - Even if the story of Mahabali is pure fiction it is a beautiful story - not because it takes us back to an era of social justice, but it helps us dream: The more the inequality, the more will be the intensity of the equality dream. But we also have to look ourself and make sure that there are no discrepancies in the way we perceive the external and internal world. Otherwise, like Mahabali, we might get carried away by our sense of self-importance. Wish you all a happy Onam and prosperous new year. Thank you Sreejith Kesavan

Chitra Iyer (the popular South Indian playback singer) and team performed an enchanting stage pro-gram in Westminster School Hall, Adelaide on 16th August 2008. This event was organized by Adelaide Mala-yalee Metropolitan Association. Chitra’s mellifluous musical parade did include many film hits from Malaya-lam, Tamil and Hindi; which were welcomed by the audience with cheer and applause. Kishor Varma, the leading male voice of the event could accomplish a melodious performance in the absence of Afzal and his co-singer Yazar did a great job on key board while singing simultaneously. Other items of the evening were presented by Baiju, Prashanth, Devichandana, and Manoj Guiness much to the delight of viewers. Their humorous shows and skits made an enthralling mood in the hall and among them Baiju was outstanding with his characteristic and peculiar numbers. Prasanth showed a good talent in coordination and presentation of the program. AMMA can be proud and happy in organizing this entertainment for their members who were cherishing for such an event for a long time.

STORY BEHIND ONAM The story runs thus “There lived an emperor in
kerala by name Maha- Bali - (Maha meaning great) .He
ruled this piece of land so well that his kingdom became
More prosperous than heaven. This made the demi- gods
of heaven so jealous that they conspired to eliminate
him. The demigods (Devas) approached Lord Vishnu,
their chief and appealed for the elimination of the king to
save the heaven from loosing its status. Lord Vishnu
took the shape of a poor Brahmin and approached the king beseeched for Alms the king offered to give the
Brahmin whatever he asked. In return the Brahmin begged for three feet measure of land. The Brahmin all
of a sudden turned in to his original form and measured all earth, heaven and hell with his two feet and
asked for space for his third foot. Mahabali came to know about true identity of the royal visitor and with
due obeisance bowed his head before Lord Vishnu and begged that the third foot may be placed on his
head. Lord Vishnu Was shaken by the benevolence of the great Mahabali and readily headed to Bali’s
humble request that once in a year he may be permitted to visit his dear land that is Kerala. And after
Vishnu placed his foot on the head of the emperor, suddenly the Emperor was transported to his original
abode. But as promised Mahalbali visits Kerala once in a year to see his dear people it is believed that
Mahabali visits each and every home in Kerala. People of Kerala to show their respect to their former king
recreate a happy and provide atmosphere to please Mahabali.
