Dear Parents and Caregivers The rather wet weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of all those who came to our annual PTA Quiz Night on Satur-day Night. A great time was had by everyone as we looked to raise funds to support our technology programme through the provision of new kitchen modules. This has come about as our modernised Jiddles block will soak up the current multi-purpose kitchen space meaning a new area will be established in what is now the art room. A huge thank you to all the team who made the night possible led by PTA Chair Sheree Horton along with a large group of other people. The hall looked a picture, the ques-tions had just the right sort of challenge about them, the food was fantastic, the prizes and sponsor support outstanding and the refreshments delivered with a massive smile. However you helped and supported whether by way of a role or through attendance as a team (awesome costumes too) – thank you, thank you. This sort of night and your support is a true sign that community spirit in Pongakawa is alive and well. Turning into School Road many of you will have noticed the sign has had a change and we now have the Jubilee 125 one in place. You can find out more on Facebook and on the website specifically set up to support this occasion. This will be a really useful place to gather information not only about what is happening but also who is coming along. The committee working on this event is coming up with a programme that is sure to have something in it for people of all ages with interest coming from all corners of the world. Naturally you will also find ongoing details in this newsletter over the coming months and in the Pongakawa Press. It may be a useful idea to chat to your child about the need to bring their phone to school. I have had a few parents lately who have mentioned they were unaware their child had been bringing it and certainly did not have their permission to do so. I would suggest that unless you have some very special circumstances there is little need for the phone to be here. Despite what children may tell you, if a child needs to get hold of a parent urgently we will always make this happen. Sometimes if they are asking something that quite clearly will cause you to drop everything to accommodate them, (forgotten physed gear is a classic) then it might be a no. This is not because we are being mean but rather reinforcing the message of responsibility they have to organise themselves for school rather than expecting someone else will always do this for them in the family. Naturally, in this case we are talking of the children who are a little older. Having a phone at school “just because” or so I can listen to music on the way home is not a pressure you have to feel as a parent. As an alternative I often recommend children try something that worked pretty well for us – talking. Have an awesome week. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

Strep Throat We are currently experiencing several cases of strep throat around school. If your child has symptoms of vomiting, sore throat or headache with temperatures please get them tested by their doctor. They are contagious until 24 hours after anti-biotics have started. If left untreated it can cause rheumatic fever which affects your heart.
Health Check Please can all families check their child/dren for head lice as we have had constant recurring instances throughout the school in recent weeks.
