Drives are employed for systems that require motion control
– e.g. transportation system, fans, robots, pumps, machine
tools, etc. Prime movers are required in drive systems to
provide the movement or motion and energy t hat is used to
provide the motion can come from various sources: diesel
engines, petrol engines, hydraulic motors, electric motors etc.
Drives that use electric motors as the prime movers are
known as electrical drives
There are several advantages of electrical drives:
a. Flexible control characteristic – This is particularly true
when power electronic converters are employed where the
dynamic and steady state characteristics of the motor can be controlled by controlling the applied voltage
or current.

LIGHTENING HARNESSING
Lightning is one of the most beautiful displays in nature yet it is
the most deadly natural phenomenon known to man. Benjamin
Franklin was the first to prove electricity in lightning in 1752, yet,
we still remain in awe of lightning which flashes in its mystery.
Early studies done to find that lightning is electricity paved the way
for this article, to investigate the power behind the lightning, its
source and the possibilities of harnessing lightning power. It has
been estimated that lightning strikes somewhere on the surface of
the Earth about 100 times every second. Despite its frequency of
occurrence lightning electricity could not be transformed into a
useful quality. Article By: A.SRAVYA, II EEE

NANO TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS
The application
of nanotechnology in
various applied fields
is receiving wide-
spread attention. It
is important to en-
sure that these ap-
plications address
real questions to
allow the technology
to improve general
well-being of the public, especially when evaluating applica-
tion in the area of civil engineering. This chapter focuses on
the specific applications of nanotechnology in the field of road
pavements. The main objectives of pavements are to provide a
safe and durable surface on which vehicles can travel, while
protecting the underlying layers of material during all envi-
ronmental conditions.
GUEST LECTURES
The one day guest lecture on “Electricity: generation, transmission,
distribution” is organized by Department of EEE on 13th February 2013 un-
der TEQIP-II. The Guest lecture aims at developing technical skills and ba-
sic foundation in the areas of Power System such as generation of power by
using gas, different types of transformers used in the power station from
generation to generation, internal parts of the turbine.
The Resource person for the workshop is O.V.J.RAJA who is work-
ing as a Divisional Engineer at APTRANSCO, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
about 120 participants were appeared form III & IV B.Tech-EEE.
