EDITORIAL
The Indian Textile Industry counts among the leading textile industries in the world. Apart from providing the basic necessities of life, its role in the country's economic growth is significant. The Indian Textile industry contributes about 14 per cent to industrial production; 4 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP); 17 per cent to its export earnings; and is a source of direct employment for over 35 million people, which makes it the second largest provider of employment after agriculture. Abundant raw materials, healthy foreign direct investments (FDI) and a government willing to invest ensures a bright future for India's textile sector. Recently CCEA has approved the launching of new integrated Processing Development Scheme (IPDS) with total cost of Rs 500 Crore during 12th Five Year Plan.
Having all above healthy practices to upgrade textile industry, what about the health of Textile Education in India? Is the Textile Education and course curriculum is adequate as per the need of industries? The time has come to carryout research in textile education system. There is a need of survey to match the industry activity and curriculum related to textile manufacturing and processing. The need of technical man power required to run the industry and textile graduates produced in country should be fit for each other's requirement. A critical study is required in this regards. An innovative module is expected so that it will be more relevant to the field.
The industry –Institute interaction bond should be strong. It is difficult process to procure expensive textile machineries for training at educational institute. However an alternative like simulation type of study of entire textile process is a need of time to well-equipped textile institute and live demonstration using virtual mode of study be adopted during course delivery besides traditional approach of having in plant training. Such innovative approach of teaching methodology is today's requirement.
Textile industries support to make textile education more practical oriented is the need of hour. Support from bodies like the Textile Association and research organizations will help to fulfil the requirement and to establish innovative educational curriculum to attract more talent in textile study. This will in turn help the industry to grow beyond target.
Let us join hand to make mission successful.
