Turkey Shoot Results
The 2012 golf event calendar wrapped up with the annual Turkey Shoot on Saturday, November 3rd. We had a field of 36 players. This event was a blind-draw, ABCD scramble format where players were randomly paired with three other players from different handicap ranges. Each player received a turkey and had the opportunity to judge the chili cook-off between several of our own staff members. Many Members decided to donate their turkeys to Safe Families. Safe Families is an organization that takes in orphaned children and gives them a home. Thank you to Bob Noonan for suggesting this charity.

The holiday season is upon us! This is a time for family, friends, and reflections on the past year. And it was quite a year, one that will not soon be forgotten. There was no easing into 2012 with the temperatures that hit in early March. We stayed very dry all season, which continues into this day (we are still in moderate to severe drought stage). But with the challenges that were present, turfgrass stayed healthy, and playing conditions were good. We have implemented many sound agronomic programs that will provide better playing conditions with each passing season. Moving forward, the 2013 season begins right now in the grounds department. Our work over the next few months is what sets the stage for next season. All equipment must be serviced, reels are ground, the shop is organized for efficient use, and agronomic plans are reviewed and tweaked for optimal long term health and conditioning. This is a time for research, documentation, and calendar planning. By the end of the winter, all activities to be implemented can be found day by day on a master calendar.
You may note that there are no covers on the greens…and there won’t be this winter. We tested a few spots on greens last winter to see if desiccation was going to be an issue, and it was not. The down side to the covers is the very positive growing environment provided for Poa annua. When we weigh the positive vs. the negative, the Poa encouragement outweighs the potential for drying out, thus, no covers. What we will do to counteract the potential for drying winds is apply an anti-transpirant (this helps hold water in the plant), and eventually apply a blanket of sand on the greens. This will act as enough of a tarp to protect from the elements while not encouraging Poa. Side benefit, greens will be open longer. Eventually we will set temporary hole locations as there will be a fair amount of sand just sitting on the greens.
A note for those of you who enjoy using the course for cross country skiing, please remember to stay away from all greens and tees. Repeated traffic can cause damage that will last well into the Spring. We are here all winter long. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch at any time. Happy holidays to you and your family!

Hawthorn Woods Country Club is proud to announce its partnership for a second consecutive season with the local Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” Foundation for Highwood, IL in Lake County. Hawthorn
Woods Country Club is an official drop off site for new, unwrapped toys from November 24th through December 19th of this year. There will be drop off boxes located in the clubhouse lobby, golf pro shop and fitness center areas at the Club. We encourage Members and non-Members to support this worthy cause during the 2012 holiday season. Our Toys for Tots toy drive will culminate at our Member “Santa Dinner” event on Wednesday, December 19th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Not only will Santa be on hand, but we will also have two active-duty Marines here at the Club to personally collect toys from Members and their guests. Last year’s Santa Dinner SOLD OUT, so make your reservation today!
Warmer Climate Golf: Just a reminder with the cold weather approaching here in the Midwest that our KemperCollection as well as Toll Brothers’ Associate Clubs Programs are available to our golf Members to enjoy access to other golf courses throughout the country for an affordable green fee rate. For more information, please consult our website at www.hwccgolf.com (Member’s Only section) or contact our Head Golf Professional, Joe Titus at 847.847.3258 or jtitus@hwccgolf.com. A great opportunity to tee it up while you are traveling south!
Blood Drive “Thank You”: A big THANKS goes out to those Members and employees who came out to support our LifeSource blood drive last month. We plan to host additional drives in the future and have tentatively targeted the month of March for our next blood drive. Our goal is to make your home Club a convenient location for those of you who donate on a regular basis. We hope donor participation will continue to grow in the future so we can make this a quarterly event here at HWCC!
Here’s wishing you and yours all the best during the upcoming holiday season. We thank you for your continued support of Hawthorn Woods Country Club and look forward to an exciting 2013 season. Happy New Year! Ryno
