Kia ora and welcome to the newsletter at the end of one of the biggest weeks of the year at Wakatipu High School. This week we had two very important celebrations and ceremonies - Senior Prizegiving and Cultural Blues, and I will mention both below. To the many parents and students who attended, I hope that you really enjoyed them. Senior Prizegiving - is our most formal and significant ceremony of the year, and an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our students’ academic, service and leadership efforts and achievements. The pinnacle of the senior prizegiving is the Real Journeys Dux Award to our highest academic achiever. This year it was a pleasure to announce Hamish Attenborough as the Dux of WHS for 2017. Following a fantastic haka to honour him, Hamish delivered a truly wonderful valedictory speech. We do know just how hard many of our students work and how well-deserved many of the awards are, and so we have included the lists of prizewinners below - congratulations to them all. Cultural Blues - on Tuesday we had our Cultural Blues evening. It is always a great night - beginning with the amazing exhibition of students’ art and performances. The special guests, the Black Friars from south Auckland, were fantastic and very fitting guests for the evening. My thanks to everyone who came along and made it a great night. New School - is continuing to progress well. 12 months ago they were just starting to put up the walls, this week the school name and crest have been put on the northern side of the school - it is definitely our new school! Do remember the New School Facebook page to keep up to date with all the latest.
A big part of the move to the new school has been sorting out what we are and aren’t taking with us, and we’re having a ‘Big Moving Auction’! While there is lots of school furniture etc, there is also a huge range of other items from ovens to heaters to snow shovels ... Click here to view, the auction opens next Fri 10th Nov. Branches - the first of the now weekly meetings with students was this morning, and parents have been emailed an update this afternoon. Key items at the moment are the electronic Permission, Medical, Dietary and Transport Form which is due on Monday, and that Workday is two weeks today. Tutorial Week started for senior students today, see more below - we hope seniors make the most of this, please do support them to study well for their exams which start next week. Junior Maths and English exams are also next week and juniors should also be preparing for those. After a stunning week of weather a very mixed spring weekend awaits. Steve Hall, Principal

Due to delays on the Kawarau bridge and buses arriving late to school in the morning we have made the decision to alter the morning timetable to the Jack’s Point and Kelvin Heights buses for the rest of the term. Departure time from Kelvin Heights will be 10 minutes earlier. The bus will depart from Poplar Drive at 8am. Departure time from Jack’s Point will also be 10 minutes earlier. The departure from Boyd Rd will now be 7:50am and from Maori Jack Rd at 7:55am. This will take effect from Monday 6 November. Mr Gilbert Bus Manager

During 7-8 November Year 10 students will have their Mathematics and English exams and Year 9 students will have their Mathematics exam. Students should be beginning their revision for these important exams.
WHS class of 2017 will be celebrating their graduation at Skyline on Monday 11 December. Graduation invitations have been sent out to all graduating Year 13 students and their families. Tickets will be on sale at the school office until Friday 10 November. Tickets are $45 each and a maximum of three tickets per graduating student may be purchased (NB That is 1 ticket for the student plus 2 more). If there are still tickets available after 10 November then students and their families will be given the opportunity to purchase additional tickets. A reminder following the email sent on Tuesday that to purchase a Graduation Ticket, students must have met all of their obligations, including attendance, fees and discipline. Please note that if payment of fees is an issue please contact our Guidance Counsellor, Vicki Patton or our Finance Manager Michelle Loggenberg to discuss or make arrangements. A huge thank you to Alyssandra Skerrett for donating her time and energy into making the beautiful invitations.

During Tutorial Week teachers of senior classes will be available in their classrooms during the usual timetabled lessons to provide tutorials for students as they prepare for their exams. All senior students that are on the school site must be in tutorials, designated study rooms (a timetable of available rooms will be provided), or the Library, otherwise they are expected to be off site. Students may wear mufti during this week and throughout exams. Please note that Examinations begin on Thursday 9 November and students are expected to attend all exams for which they are entered. See here the link to NZQA website - exam timetable: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/ncea-exams-and-portfolios/external/national-secondary-examinations-timetable/

Tuesday night was the annual Cultural Blues Awards which was a great evening featuring exhibitions of our senior Art students, performances by Drama and Music students and a celebration of achievement across the Arts. Added to this was the guest speakers, three members of the Black Friars who provided an insight into their world of performing arts and how they engage with the student Polynesian community of South Auckland. Fabulously entertaining, they communicated a strong message of passion and strength through Drama and how students should be encouraged to be themselves and follow their passions. Congratulations to everyone who was involved in this event and especially to the students who have achieved at such a high level this year. Mrs Price HoLA Arts

On 23 October a group of fourteen students travelled to Tekapo in dubious weather. After much speculation, the clouds cleared thirty minutes before our 12:30am departure from Tekapo up to Mount John Observatory. Halfway up Mount John, the bus driver turned off the headlights to the bus and drove the remainder of the way in darkness for fear of polluting the night sky (and annoying the working astronomers searching for new planets). The stars were amazing. Some of the students had clearly ‘found their people’ as they asked questions of the young international astronomers which made no apparent sense to bystanders, but initiated intense conversations. The students saw things like the Tarantula Nebula, a stellar nursery some mind-numbing 200,000 light years away - in one second, travelling at light speed, you would whizz around the earth about seven times. An excited but exhausted group of students finally got to bed at 3:30am. Next morning it was an early stumble to the vans for a drive to Christchurch and a visit to the University of Canterbury. Students visited the geography department to learn about drones used for mapping out volcanoes, chasing Kaikoura seals, and creating multi-dimensional models of features. Next it was to the Biology labs where students used enzymes to slice DNA. It looked like a scene from CSI with centrifuges spinning and pipets injecting tiny quantities of viruses. The afternoon was spent discussing the dangers of artificial intelligence with a philosophy lecturer (very scary), and finding out about the different aspects of psychology. Lastly, students built structures with civil engineering PHD students, learning about forces and bracing. An evening visit to Cathedral square followed by an impromptu trip to the Margaret Mahy Playground provided much needed mental down time. Wednesday morning was a visit to the Canterbury Museum, then the long drive home. Overall, it was a fantastic trip with a fantastic group of young people. Dispute the lack of sleep, they were highly engaged and hopefully had an experience they will never forget. I would like to thank Mr Steve Rooney who accompanied Mrs Linda Richards and myself and was a fantastic parent support and awesome provider of much needed coffee. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to be honest here. This is the last week at school for all senior students and I wanted to write something sentimental about how we have grown together, laced with tear-jerking quotes and analogies. Yet, in the hour and a half study period I dedicated to writing this, all my research consisted of was watching the Top Gun trailer one to too many times and discovering the best way to lose a chasing crocodile. Turns out they are really fast on land but are not agile; so run in zig zags. But anyway, as this is the senior's final goodbye for the year I would like to dedicate this message to them. It all comes down to luck. You are lucky to be here. You are incalculably lucky to be born, especially born in such a privileged environment as Queenstown. Lucky that you passed that last in internal, lucky you didn’t get hit by a car crossing the road this morning. Luck is the foundation of life. Therefore, understanding that you can not truly take credit for your successes, nor truly blame others for their failures will humble you and make you more emphatic. Compassion is an innate behaviour but is also something that can be developed into a well oiled learned characteristic. A characteristic that will make others feel valued, in the process bringing you a sense of happiness. Happiness. A wise man once said, “Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will elude you; but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.” Hence, don’t seek for happiness, happiness will find you in the strangest of places during the strangest of times. Throughout this year, we have all experienced our own piece of contentment, yet, it is never sustained. That brings me to my final words of wisdom. Life is full of undulating terrain. You’ll be happy, you’ll be sad, you’ll be in a rest home and before you know it, you’ll be dead. Looking at a universal scale, you are insignificant. I don’t want to be cynical, but you are a mere blip in time. Although, in comparison to the cosmos we are nothing, this here, our lives, is our everything. So use the luck you have been gifted and bring happiness to those around you. Be compassionate, never stop learning and say ‘I love you’ more often. And then there’s travel, uni, wine, marriage, sex, sport, art and base jumping. But you probably already knew that stuff. So, this lucky, happy, insignificant life of yours is actually pretty extraordinary. To the Year 11s and 12s, good luck. To the class of 2017, goodbye. I believe it is not the place where you call home, but the rather the people around that make it your home. So Year 13s, I will miss you. You are, and always will be my home. Connor Kennedy Head Boy

The State of Civil Resistance in the United States - and How Does it Work? Prof Erica Chenoweth In the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, we have seen a spate of resistance emerge across the US, ranging from street protests to legal challenges. In this Catalyst Trust talk, internationally recognised authority Prof Erica Chenoweth examines the ways in which this unfolding resistance extends or contradicts recent civil resistance research. This has shown nonviolent movements tend to be more successful than those that turn to violence. And that cultivating sympathy within the state’s security apparatus is key to their success. What are the key challenges faced in movement-building? What are the obstacles to building movement cohesion, effective communication and political leverage? Prof Chenoweth is one of the world’s foremost analysts of civil resistance. She was listed by Foreign Policy in 2013 as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers “for proving Gandhi right” and received the Karl Deutsch Award (International Relations) “for the most significant contribution to the study of International Relations and Peace Research”. Chenoweth is Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She was a Visiting Fellow at Otago University in summer 2016 and is in New Zealand as keynote speaker at University of Otago’s “Rethinking Pacifism for Revolution, Security and Politics” conference.
