Dangerous MarineSpecies Identified
Publication of the second edition of"Dangerous Marine Animals" by
perate forms of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The history of theclassification and of the previous workon the osteology of the order is reviewed, while one new species (tAcanthopfeurus coffettei, Oligocene of Canton Glarus, Switzerland) and one newgenus (tEotetraodon, Eocene of MonteBolca, Italy) are described. Comparativeinclusive and exclusive definitions aregiven for all higher categories based onboth external and internal anatomicalfeatures. The Order Plectognathi (Tetraodontiformes) is divided into two suborders, the Sclerodermi or Balistoideiand the Gymnodontes or Tetraodontoidei, with a variety of other infraordinal and superfarnilial categories, and 10families, with subfamilial groupings in 4of the latter.

Bruce W. Halstead has been announced by Cornell Maritime Press,P.O. Box 456, Centreville, MD21617. The well-illustrated (16 pagesof 4-color photos or drawings),256-page volume provides a detailedand ready source of informationregarding the identification, geographical distribution, habits, andnoxious characteristics of marinespecies from around the world. Allorganisms discussed are identified bycommon and scientific name and areillustrated. The means by which theycome in contact with humans andthereby inflict injury, and how onecopes with such situations, is discussed. Practical first aid measures andmedical treatments are described.
While research scientists may misstechnical discussions of the chemicaland pharmacological properties of thepoisonous substances, the volume remains of considerable value to mostothers involved in the marine environment. The 208-page volume is indexed

the Middle Atlantic Bight region. Thisreport is based on 669 quantitative grabsamples from 563 stations on the continental shelf and upper continentalslope between Cape Cod, Mass., andCape Hatteras, N.C. The amphipodfauna from the open shelf is most completely represented, but deep-sea andestuarine species are also included. Theabundance of each species is reported interms of its numerical density. Geographic and bathymetric distributions, and sediment relationships are alsoreported for each species.
NOAA Technical Report NMFSSSFR-742. Husby, D. M., and G.R. Seckel. "Water structure atOcean Weather Station V, northwestern Pacific Ocean, 1966-71."October 1980. 56 p.
Abstract
The oceanographic station data obtained at Ocean Weather Station V from1966 to 1972 by the U.S. Coast Guardhave been analyzed and are presented ina form suitable for water structurestudies. Temperatures, salinities, anddepths are given as a function of density(sigma-t). We used harmonic analysis asa curve-fitting technique, to obtainparameters for these properties as afunction of time. The harmonic coefficients and interpolated values at the first

of each month for the 6-year series aretabulated in an appendix.
We describe the temporal distributions of salinity and depth in terms ofthe oceanographic setting. At depthsgreater than sigma-t 26, temperaturesalinity relationships remain relativelyconstant in time. Depth variations atthese levels are attributed primarily tomeanders of the Kuroshio Extension. The surface divergence, as reflected bychanges in the depth of sigma-t 26, hasno annual periodicity. The 6-year recordshows that large baroclinic variabilityoccurs at time scales of more than 55days with largest variability occurring atthe interannual scale.
Heat budget estimates show that theeffects of local ocean-atmosphere exchange processes are obscured by advected properties. For example, the heatcontent of the layer above sigrna-t 26 isprimarily determined by the divergenceof this layer and anomalies in the meantemperature are produced by heat advection rather than heat exchange across thesea surface.

"Engineering Applications: 1, Installation and Maintenance of Engines in SmaU Fishing Vessels" , FAaFisheries Technical Paper 196, byFAa consultant Brian Mutton, is abasic handbook intended primarily toaid small boatyards, boat owners, andfishermen in developing countries, still it has a lot of sound informationuseful to anyone involved in workingwith fishing vessels.
It covers principles and installationdetails for various engines; stern gear;cooling, exhaust, fuel, electrical, andstarting systems; controls and instruments, bilge pump and bilge systems, power take-off, etc. Finally, it
AbstractThe data base and an average density in
dex (ADI) procedure for assessing walleyepollock, Theragra chalcogramma, abundance in the eastern Bering Sea were evaluated. The data base consisted of dailycatch-effort records of individual fishingvessels in the Japanese groundfish fisheryfrom 1964 to 1976. Variances about theannual mean catch, effort, and catch perunit effort (CPUE) data were low. Coefficient of variation of annual CPUE datawas in the 1-2070 range for the data baseafter 1969 but higher in earlier years whenthe number of fishing records was lower. An ADI procedure is described whichtakes into consideration different types ofvessels used in the fishery, species mix inthe catch, distribution of pollock, andfishing pattern of the fleet. Data from fivevessel class-gear types that fished mainlyfor pollock were selected to compute ADlsin four area-time cells. An overall ADIwithin these cells was determined, summarizing the results by vessel class-geartypes and area-time cells. From 1964 to theearly 1970s, overall ADI and CPUE trendsincreased as a result of increased pollockabundance and fishing power of vessels. For 2-3 years during the early 1970s, abundances of pollock were at peak levels. Beginning in 1972, abundance declined butstabilized during 1975-78 at an intermediate level when 1.1 million metric tonsof walleye pollock were harvested annually.
discusses engine selection, obtainingparts and tools, and care and maintenance. The 127-page volume costs$7.25.
The "Handbook of Utilization ofAquatic Plants," by E. C. S. Little(FAa Fisheries Technical Paper 187),is a completely revised and updatedversion of the author's 1968 handbook, "Utilization of AquaticPlants" and provides an extensivereview of the world literature, with anannotated listing of more than 250books, papers, etc. on aquatic plantuses. The largest section concerns thechemical composition and productivity of various species and a largenumber of analytical results arequoted. Sections are included on harvesting and protein extraction.
Other sections deal with harvestingmethods; use for human, livestock, fish, and aquatic animal foods; usefor fertilizer, compost, mulch, etc.;and such miscellaneous uses as fuel, paper, building materials, medicines,

"Theory and Practice of EelCulture," [Yomanho no riron tojissai], by Isao Matsui, has beentranslated from the Japanese andpublished for the National MarineFisheries Service and the NationalScience Foundation by Amerind Publishing Co., New Delhi, India. It isavailable (price not listed) from theNational Technical Information Service, U.S. Department of Commerce,Springfield, VA 22161.
The 133-page volume includes awide range of information on eels andtheir culture that makes it useful tobeginners, scientists, and eel culturists. Chapters discuss the positionof eel culture in Japan, types anddistribution of eels in Japan, life cycleof eels, elvers and their collection, feeding the eels, the proper environment, diseases and prophylaxis, pondmanagement and culture techniques, marketing, and eel management.
Squid Fishing Areas andTrawl Obstruction SitesListed for Atlantic Coast
The Virginia Institute of MarineScience, Gloucester Point, VA 23062,has published "Location of ForeignFishing Vessels Harvesting Squid inthe Mid-Atlantic Region of theUnited States: 1970-1976" by Jameszaborski (SRAMSOE No. 235) tohelp U.S. fishermen locate squidresources within the Mid-AtlanticU.S. Fishery Conservation Zone. It isa summary of foreign squid fishingactivities in this area, summarizedfrom NMFS, Coast Guard, and ICNAF data. The charts show, on amontWy basis, areas where foreignvessels were engaged or were believedengaged in squid fishing, by frequency of use of the areas. Data for bothRlex illecebrosus and Loligo pealei aregiven. While abundance and seasonallocation of squid are likely to changeas a result of environmental fluctuations and changes in stock size, thedata remain a good tool to determineareas and times for squid fishing.
VIMS also has copies of the "Fish-
ermen's Hang Log of the AtlanticCoast of the United States", an expanded version of a 1975 collection ofdata from trawler captains whocharted objects or ocean bottom itemsthat would hang or snag trawling gearand nets. The log provides as manyLoran A cross bearings as possibleand, when possible, converts them toLoran C. Depth (in fathoms) is givenwhere possible.
Marine, FreshwaterFisheries in the PRe
Availability of "AquacultureDevelopment in China," a report onan FAO/UNDP Aquaculture StudyTour to the People's Republic ofChina, 2 May-l June 1978, has beenannounced by UNIPUB, 345 ParkAvenue South, New York, NY 10010.Covered are aspects of Chineseaquaculture development, planning, and management; financing andcredit; fish culture practices; integrated farming of fish, crop, andlivestock; fish cultivation in naturallakes, reservoirs, and rivers; marineaquaculture; marketing; educationand training; and fisheries research.Cost is $6.00 for the 65-page volume.
Also available from UNIPUB is"Fisheries and Aquaculture in thePeople's Republic of China" by G. I.Pritchard. This small pamphlet(about 22 full pages of text, 7photographs) provides a glimpse ofChinese fish culture activities, fisheries priorities and achievements, andthe Chinese perspective on fisheriesscience and development.
In general, marine fisheries scienceand development has lagged whilefreshwater fish culture has grown. However, the author predicts a goodoutlook for fisheries science andculture, particularly if coupled withthe broad base of western science andtechnology. He also reports on Chinese studies on the production andfeeding of seals and progress in artificial propagation of eels. About 60citations of Chinese fisheries literatureare listed. Published by the International Development Research Centerin Canada, this booklet costs $3.50.
