• New Netherland– A colony started by the Dutch in 1621.– To encourage immigration, the Dutch gave

large grants of land to people who bring at least 50 settlers to work it. This was called the patroon system.

– It was diverse, with people with different beliefs moving in from many countries.

• Peter Stuyvesant was governor when the English took control in 1664.

• King Charles II gave this proprietary colony to his brother, the Duke of York, who renamed it New York.

• The English captured New Netherland in 1664.

What is the difference between a commercial and subsistence economy?

Commercial economy- economies where people have surplus product beyond what they need for their own survival, which they take to a market to trade or sell.

Subsistence economy- economies (such as subsistence farming) where families use all they raise for their own needs.
