Meeting with
Politicians in Canberra
On Monday, 19th
February, Ken and Di
attended a meeting at
Parliament House,
Canberra where Aust
of the Year Simon
McKeon spoke on Polio
and Ken addressed the
involvement of Rotary
in the eradication of
this disease over the
past 30 years.
The meeting was
focused on the
politicians and gaining
their support for the
request for funds from
the Aust. Government
in the final push to
eradicate polio.
In attendance were the
Consul Generals from
Nigeria and Pakistan,
two of the four Polio
endemic countries,
both spoke off the cuff
of the need to get the
job completed and how
it is achievable.
Asia Pacific Regional

the Asia Pacific
Regional Rotaract
Conferences which are
held in various
countries throughout
Asia.
PRID Ken has been
asked by Rotary

Bay and to address the
Rotaractors on Polio.
The young folk show
their commitment to

Regional
Conferences. Next

more than 1,000 in
attendance in Subic
Bay.

are most involved, who
see the problems and
have the means to find

within and unleash
your inner power and
then use it to embrace
everything and
everyone around you”.
Words from RI Pres.

“Rotarians share a
responsibility to make
Rotary clubs stronger
by attracting quality
members and ensuring
that every club meeting

News from our
Ambassadorial
Scholar Justin Hewett
I have just completed my
third week of the semester
at the law school. It's
been a really interesting
experience. I have been
amazed at how open the
professors are in their
criticism of the Chinese
law system. Despite the
reforms that have taken
place in the last 30 years,
they still claim that there
is not a rule of law in
China, mainly due to the
single party system and
lack of an independent
judiciary.
Yesterday, I attended a
summit commemorating
the 10th anniversary of
China's accession to the
World Trade
Organisation. Only the
international post-
graduate law students of
Tsinghua University
were invited. It was
interesting to hear a
variety of views regarding
how China has fared over
the last ten year period, as
well as how China should
tackle its future in this
period of global
uncertainty. I met a
variety of people at the
conference, including
Christian Murck, the
President of the American
Chamber of Commerce in
China; Geoff Raby, the
recently retired
Ambassador of Australia
to China; and Ge
Zhirong, Counsellor of
the State Council of
China and Former Vice
Minister of General
Administration of
Quality Supervision,
Inspection and
Quarantine in the PRC.
One of the Australian
embassy employees also
suggested that I do an
internship there over the
2012 Chinese summer,
which may be worth
considering in the future.
The Rotary Beijing club
has allocated Graham
Brown as my contact
person, who is an
Australia lawyer working
in China. I previously had
contact with him during
my last trip to China
during January. I'm glad
to have him as my
appointment and I am
hoping I can glean some
wisdom off him.
On a lighter note, the
student life at Tsinghua
University has been great
and it has been very easy
to make friends. The
hardest thing so far has
been balancing the social
side with my other
commitments. There is
plenty of sport on
Wilma Mc Bain with her daughter Paula McBain
Maryam Hamzavi and Elham Teimouri
Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, District 9455 Page 4
campus, but the most
prominent by far is
Basketball. It provides a
great avenue to meeting
Chinese students. Today
me and some friends woke
up at 4 am to ride our
bikes to Tiananmen
Square and witness the
raising of the Chinese
flag, though
unfortunately my pedal
broke off my bike before
we even left the
university grounds!
I trust that everything
has been going well in
Perth. I was pleased to see
the Eagles win their final
against Carlton tonight
from the comfort of an
expat sports bar =).
Regards
Justin

organise a Quiz Night
for the RCFB.
Please contact Jenny
Gill if you are prepared
to put together or assist
with a Quiz Night.
Young Cook
Competition
Still have fingers
crossed for starters for
this. Suggested by Rob
Pearce that the Club
look to combine with
Healthways next year
as they have a
competition in place
which is almost
identical to the one put
together by Jenny.
A number of schools
have indicated they
have promoted the
competition. With
school holidays about
to commence, it might
be just the time for
young people to
register to become
involved.
Jenny Gill’s article has
been published in this
week’s issue of the Post
Newspaper so that too
Parliament House Canberra, PRID Ken Collins, Australian
