Gatesville August 2018
The mission of our church is to raise up disciples of Christ through love, service, and example.
FROM STEPHEN’S STUDY
Psalm 46:7-10 (NIV) “7
The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8
Come and see what the LORD has
done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.9
He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He
breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.10
He says, “Be still, and know that
I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
We live in a society today where life moves at a frenetic pace. We pack our daily schedules so full that
we have very little time for rest. If you are like me, you often feel guilty when you take time for yourself.
You may even struggle with making time in your day to day life for prayer and the study of God’s word.
We also live in a world where it is so easy to worry about things. The state of racial tension in our soci-
ety, the political climate of our nation, the threats of other leaders toward the United States, family is-
sues, all of these things can overwhelm us with worry. Worry consumes us and prevents us from en-
joying all the good things life has to offer us.
Karen and I have been working hard to get everything unpacked at our new home. We work during the
day and spend the afternoons and evenings unpacking and organizing things, hanging pictures, and
cleaning house. It seems like and unending task. We are making headway, but are exhausted at the
end of the day. The extreme heat we are dealing with of late does not make our work any easier.
Psalm 46 was written as a reminder to God’s people that God was and is their refuge and strength, “an
ever present help in time of trouble.” It was a reminder to God’s people that war and destruction are
inevitable, but so is God’s final victory. It was an effort to encourage God’s people to relax and know
that God was and is in charge.
For those of us who are consumed by worry, and live life at such a hectic pace, Psalm 46: 7-10 reminds
us that we need to slow down and take time to be still and know that God is God. We need to slow
down and take time to acknowledge God’s presence in our daily lives. We need to take time to pray
and study God’s Word. We need to stop worrying and trust that God is in still in control. We must take
time to recognize God’s power and majesty, and his ability to take care of us no matter what. We need
to take time each day to allow God to surround us with his presence, comfort, and peace.
My prayer is that you will take time this week to “Be still and know that God is God.”
See you Sunday, Stephen

I would like to thank all of the youth that came to my house on June 20th. They were wonderful. They worked really hard taking care of things that I have needed help with for a very long time. I am so thankful for them and very much enjoyed their company. Also, plenty of thanks to Linda Klontz, Tom Sweazea and Doug Peevey for bringing the youth and doing a lot of the work themselves. -Sue Durham
