TA Training & Network Building on the very popular TA events of last year, Jo Bolton Brown will be delivering FREE the following training to any Teaching Assistant from a STAR Allinace member schools (primary or secondary):
The Teaching Assistant as Scaffolder – maximising the impact of the Teaching Assistant How do we improve the interactions we have with pupils through scaffolding? We will discuss scaffolding in detail and look at TA’s role in encouraging pupils to think of strategies they can use to solve the problems for themselves. How to support pupils to become more independent.
The session will also allow time to network, share best practice and discussion time. Agenda items should be sent direct to Nikki at Kellington (email: admin@kellington.n-yorks.sch.uk) ASP Training for Headteachers On behalf of NYCC, STAR TSA are hosting an ASP (RAISE replacement) training session on 9th November , 4pm -6pm at Monk Fryston School. This training is funded by the Primary Improvement Partnership and each school in North Yorkshire may have one place for the headteacher or other Senior Leader. Current attendees are at Annex A – please let BusinessManager@STARteachingschoolalliance.org if you are not on the list but would like to attend. To get the most out of this event, delegates should bring their own mobile device and ensure that that they can access ASP using Secure Access login details before the meeting.
Level 3 Emergency Paediatric 1st Aid On the back of the recent successful first aid at work courses and demand from schools , a 6hr Emergency Paediatric 1st Aid course has been arranged to run over two twilights on 11th and 18th October, 4:15pm -7:15pm at Appleton Roebuck. A small number of places are still available (maximum number 16). Full details of the course can be seen at Annex F. If you would like to book a place please email. Each Alliance will build on the shared, core programme with bespoke elements to best support the cohort and context of NQTs in their area.

Middle Leaders Development Programme Places are filling up fast on this popular programme available so schools are advised to book quick to avoid disappointment.

Data Protection Training – REVISED DATE Veritau are to run basic data protection training at Monk Fryston for staff. Unfortunately, due to a funeral the date has had to be rearranged from 27th Sept to 11th October, 3.45 – 5pm. All schools are welcome to attend for a small charge of £10 per delegate – please advise BusinessManager@STARteachingschoolalliance.org of the names of any attendees. New/Refresher Governor Training Based on popular demand the STAR Teaching School Alliance is pleased to be able to offer a twilight training session for governors. This is a fully up to date course incorporating the new Governor Competencies and material from the latest Governor Handbook. See Annex C for more details. Open to governors from any school. Schools will be charged on a sliding scale (maximum £40 per STAR Alliance delegate) so the more the merrier & cheaper!!

Swaledale Alliance SSIF project: Lead Practitioner
The Swaledale Alliance has made a successful bid for funding from the DfE Strategic School Improvement Fund (SSIF) for a project to develop pupils’ metacognition – understanding of their own learning – in 10 North Yorkshire primary schools serving forces communities.
These are full time posts - secondment and/or job shares would be considered.
Required for January 2018 – 2 posts – fixed term to April 2019
Salary: Leading Practitioner Pay Range – ISR L1-5 (£39 374– £43 454)

STAR TSA HLTA Programme This programme is for teaching assistants who wish to be assessed against the national HLTA standards, leading to the award of HLTA status accredited by the HLTA Assessment Partnership via HLTA North of England.
Delegates enrolled on the programme Cost £1100 per person which includes the £180 registration fee and £250 assessment fee.
Outline of Programme
Running over a six month period (January 2018 – June 2018) candidates will be required to:
Attend 4 full days and 8 twilight sessions over the duration of the course. These sessions will focus on developing the candidate’s ability to teach whole classes of children across the primary age range.
Compile a portfolio of evidence and written assignments which demonstrates their learning against each of the assessment criteria for the course.
Undertake a final assessment. This comprises of a half day visit to the candidates school by an HLTA assessor and normally takes place 2-3 weeks after the final day of the course. During the assessment visit the assessor will meet with the candidate, teaching colleagues and the Headteacher. The assessor will also spend time looking at the candidate’s portfolio of evidence.
Support expectations for candidates
It is important that candidates have the facility to develop and practice their skills. It is imperative therefore that they have the full support of their Headteacher and are given the opportunity to teach each week in their own school during the course. Candidates will also be allocated an in school mentor who is an experienced teacher. In addition to this candidates will receive two visits from a course tutor who will watch them teach and offer support.
Minimum requirements
Candidates must have a Level 2 qualification in both Maths and English e.g. GCSE grades A* – C or Adult Literacy or Numeracy.
In supporting a candidate’s application for this course, headteachers will be asked to confirm that the candidate has the ability to achieve the HLTA standards. The standards can be found on the HLTA National
Assessment Partnership website.

The programme is designed to be a highly practical one that will allow Newly Qualified Teachers to take responsibility for their development as an excellent practitioner. Sessions delivered by Specialist Leaders will be punctuated with strategies and tasks to empower NQTs to improve themselves, such as lesson studies, teach meets and action research. Drawing from materials produced by St.Mary’s Teaching School and Leeds Beckett University, the programme will include a series of face-to-face training sessions and school-based development tasks. Additionally delegates will benefit from a personalised one-to-one development session led by an accredited coach from Leeds Carnegie Leaders in Learning. The programme aims to: • Enable delegates to embed excellence in their own teaching and learning and become confident and
outstanding teachers; • Provide opportunities for delegates to increase their knowledge and understanding of leadership
competencies to develop curriculum leadership skills and team leadership attributes; • Enable delegates to develop teamwork skills through project work; • Enable delegates to reflect and further develop emotional intelligence capabilities that enhance their
leadership effectiveness through coaching and keeping a learning portfolio; • Support delegates in their career as aspiring leaders; and • Create peer support network enabling the sharing of best practice and improved outcomes for learners. Who should apply?

We will once again be running this highly successful programme during the 2017 – 18 academic year. This programme gives delegates the opportunity to develop their skills, confidence and knowledge to focus on driving successful team performance and improving outcomes for learners. Drawing from materials produced by NCTL and the NYPSTA, the programme will include face-to-face training sessions, school-based development tasks, and a residential element. The programme will aim to:
Improve the quality of Middle Leadership in schools
Enhance understanding of the mechanics of leadership
Enhance understanding of the personal qualities of leadership to evaluate provision & modify individual responses to achieve impact
Ensure an impact of middle leadership upon an aspect of school improvement

New/Refresher Governor Training “Governing boards are the strategic decision makers and vision setters in every school and academy. They play a
vital role in ensuring the best possible education for every child by creating robust accountability for school leaders.
Crucially, that means using and being familiar with objective data on the performance of pupils, teachers and finances
to ask the right questions and ensure resources are allocated to school priorities. It also meansensuring that schools
prepare pupils for life and the workplace by building their character and resilience and by implementing their Prevent
duty to protect them from the risks of extremism and radicalisation.”

training session for governors. This is a fully up to date course incorporating the new Governor competencies and material from the latest Governor Handbook

Swaledale Alliance SSIF project: Lead Practitioner Required for January 2018 – 2 posts – fixed term to April 2019
The Swaledale Alliance has made successful bid for funding from the DfE Strategic School Improvement
Fund (SSIF) for a project to develop pupils’ metacognition – understanding of their own learning – in 10
North Yorkshire primary schools serving forces communities.
These are full time posts - secondment and/or job shares would be considered.
Salary
Leading Practitioner Pay Range – ISR L1-5 (£39 374– £43 454), Initial appointment will be at L1

Details
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in an innovative project, working with teachers and
headteachers in 10 primary schools to develop pupils’ metacognition and self-regulation skills.
The project primary schools serve forces communities around Catterick Garrison and the neighbouring RAF
bases at Leeming, Dishforth and Linton-on Ouse.
This project seeks to improve outcomes for all pupils through the development of pupils’ metacognition and
self-regulation - empowering pupils to understand their own learning and to develop skills to enable them to
take more responsibility for their own progress. As well as impacting on standards across the schools this
approach will also help pupils to take useful skills with them in any future change of primary school –
mitigating the impact of high Service Pupil mobility - and in the transition to secondary school.
We are looking for experienced primary teachers, with successful experience of supporting and developing
other teachers, to play a leading role in the project. Those appointed will be need to be able to work
independently and on their own initiative and be able to enthuse and inspire.
The successful candidates are not expected to have existing expertise in the development of pupils’
metacognition. The initial phase of the project will focus on the development of the necessary skills and
materials.

Successful experience in developing the practice of other teachers though modelling, coaching and
mentoring
