The fight for China
Open Door Policy
• Each of the European Powers wanted a sphere of Influence to control in China.
• The US supported the Open Door Policy, in which all countries could trade with China.
The Boxer Rebellion
• They began the Boxer Rebellion targeting the foreign embassies and foreigners.
• An international force including American troops puts down the rebellion to keep the “Open Door” to the Chinese market.
The Great White Fleet

• Russo-Japanese war begins over China, TR wins Nobel Peace Prize for ending and maintaining Open Door policy.
• America’s new Navy the “Great White Fleet” was sent around the World to demonstrate US Strength.

• TR wanted a canal through the Panama region of Columbia.
• Columbia rejects the Canal plan.

Revolution in Panama
• Panamanians rebelled against Columbia and TR sent the Great White Fleet to stop Columbia from preventing Panama’s independence.
• The new gov’t of Panama allowed the US to build the canal.
The New Diplomacy
• TR added the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe doctrine that the US would intervene in Latin America to keep European nations from sending troops.
• Taft believed in Dollar Diplomacy-US investments in Latin America would benefit both and end European intervention.
