• Provides major means of long distance travel in the world

• Has substantial economic impact on global and national economies

• Plays and important role in improving environment quality and promoting sustainable development.

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF AIR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

• Airports

• Air Traffic Control Systems

• Aircraft

• Airlines

AIRPORTS

• Usually classified into two categories

– Civilian Airport

• Can be categorized into air carrier and general aviation

– Military Use

• Two Distinct Functional Areas:

– Airside Operations

– Landside Operations

AIRSIDE OPERATIONS

• Greatest expanse of airport space is occupied by runways

• Runway layouts and orientations are usually dictated by wind direction or other constraints like the presence of nearby mountains

• Runways are sometimes directionally configured to reduce aircraft noise exposure over a given community.

LANDSIDE OPERATIONS

• Deals primarily with the handling of passengers

• Passenger processing and waiting activities occur in terminal buildings.

GROUND ACCESS

• Very important especially if an airport is located a relative long way from where the passengers start their trip locally
