Understanding that this is not just our senses but the mindas well. Iyengar says pratyahara means to draw toward the

Many pet guardians believe i their pet is eating well, thedog or cat must be healthy. In many cases, this observa-tion is a good measure as to a pets wellness. However,
many a kitty parent has been ooled to believe their aging elinewas well, as it developed a serious case o hyperthyroidism alongwith a ravenous appetite! Indeed, an excessive appetite accompa-nied by proound weight loss is the hallmark o this common catdisorder. Tis condition is particularly dicult to notice when anoverweight pet is early on in the disease progression. In act, petparents may be pleased with the chubby pets weight loss, attribut-ing it to a diet change or an increase in exercise.
Holistic veterinarians have observed that i a cat lives longenough, it is quite likely to develop hyperthyroidism. Te usualtime o onset is eight or more years o age. A thorough annualwellness exam, which includes complete senior blood work, caneasily catch this disease in the early stages. Unortunately, i thisdoes not occur, many cats with this disorder progress to a poten-

Millions o people across the globe are living with diabetes,a chronic disease in which sugar levels in the blood arehigh. Te side eects o diabetes can be serious, and some
people might become very sick even beore they are diagnosed, whileothers may need to make drastic liestyle changes upon diagnosis inorder to avoid more dire consequences, including death.
Tough diabetes does not discriminate based on race or gender,women should know that certain things can elevate their risks. Birthcontrol pills, or example, can increase a womans blood glucose, orblood sugar, levels. Elevated blood sugar levels are a symptom odiabetes or prediabetes, a condition when blood sugar levels are highbut not high enough to indicate diabetes. Prediabetes can eventu-ally develop into type 2 diabetes, and recent studies have shown thatprediabetes increases a persons risk o heart disease. According to the
American Diabetes Association, women going through menopausemay also have elevated blood sugar levels thanks to hormonal changes.
So what are women concerned about diabetes to do? Toughtheres no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, which is most oen diag-nosed in children, teens or young adults, women can take steps toreduce their risk o type 2 diabetes.

try biking, swimming or playing beach volleyball to get active orto push through a plateau you may be experiencing. But beoreheading out the door to trek that hiking hill, remember two things:make saety a priority and keep weight training in your schedule.

Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must when working out outside

Someone once asked me what holistic psychotherapymeant, and he told me that the term holistic made himthink about healthy eating as a way to take care o ones body.
Tat statement is true, but there is a lot more meaning behind theword holistic. Tis word is used today in many settings, whichcan be very conusing. But, its basic meaning centers on the devel-opment o healthy mind, body and spirit, the basic components o
holistic. Holistic psychotherapy integrates all three but with anemphasis on spirit.
Obviously our bodies are important to us, or they hold ourspirit: our essence, true being, authentic sel or wise sel. It hasbeen said that we are divine beings having a human experience.So, we need our bodies to be healthy and strong to house ourmagnicent spirit! In order to really get mind, body and spirit,we can make an analogy to dierent components o a computer.
Our bodies house our hardware our brain and soware which we call our mind. Te soware allows us to create dailythinking, eelings and belies. Tese are programmed into usduring childhood development as expectations, rules, shouldsand cannots that guide our behavior throughout our lives. Teycan also be the programming through which societal norms andconormity begin to drive us; generating certain uncomortableemotions and thoughts, and leading us to act in ways we may eeldo not align with who we really are. Tese programs are condi-tioning or learned behaviors that steer us day by day.
Our ego (the part o the mind that mediates between theconscious and the unconscious, and thinks it is responsible orreality testing) incorporates all o our programmed conditioning.Tough it will always be a part o us, it also thinks it is separate and
responsible or keeping us in line and oen rooted in ear-bthinking, thereby limiting our thinking, belies and lie choMost oen, our ego ends up holding us back, even keepineeling trapped in habitual and repetitive patterns o thing and doing. It is the conditioning that began early in lie continues to drive how we live our lives in the present, HABIALLY running on and on like old, outdated programming.

Q: Why does one meditate?aw: Tere are many reasons; themost common o which is or spiritual prac-tice. For example, when a Catholic repeatsone prayer over and over, or uses a rosary,or when a Buddhist uses prayer beads asone chants mantras over and over, ocusedtotally on one short prayer. In other appli-cations, a mathematician may ocus on thesmallest number in order to see the biggerpicture. Most inventions have come about bysomeone identiying a need, and then ocus-ing on a way to ulll it. Playing chess or evena video game can be a meditation. Meditationcan be used or many reasons: stress relie, toknow ones sel, to know ones innite mind,to nd solutions, to contemplate ones dailyendeavors and, my personal avorite, to seek
to know the creation by knowing ones sel.
Q:How do I meditate?aw: Tere are thousands o ways tomeditate. It can be conusing or the begin-ner. In picking a method o meditation, youshould look or simplicity. It is said Buddhapracticed 1001 methods; many were quitecomplex and did not render the results hesought. He inevitably returned to the rstorm o meditation he practiced, the simplestorm: to ocus on ones breath and nothingelse. Over many years o meditating only onhis breath, the man called Sardath becameTe Buddha. I have used this method orover 30 years. In that time, I have had many
visions and great epiphanies, yet I have notyet mastered the breath. For me, meditationis part o my lie, my work and my spirituality.
No matter why you choose to meditate,you should know the technique may besimple. Tat does not mean it is easy. Nordoes it mean you will get results in one week.But i you meditate every day or 15 minutes,

we as humans have a tendency to view all cats the sameway: low-maintenance, independent creatures thathave limited loyalty, and dont really care or the same
play or attention as mans best riends (dogs) do. At least thatswhat I thought when my husband and I welcomed a rescued eralkitten into the household. We expected a cat that was like the oneI had lost two years prior: independent, unsocial, able to entertainitsel and satised with one ood orever.
Boy was I wrong.Our new kitten expected to be entertained and kept busy 24/7.
She cuddled into the laps o everyone she met and enjoyed beingpetted by new people. I she didnt get her way, she was vocal, notthe silent, brooding type. And one day when she stopped eating herood, I blamed it on the heat o summer. But, it just turned out thatshe was really tired o the ood I had been eeding her or months.
Every cat has its own personality. While one cat may all into thetypical generalization people have or them, others might not. Tismeans your plan or caring or your eline needs to be tweaked tomeet their specic needs. Here are some tips that may make livingwith your cat a bit easier.1. Pu-erh tea is a variety o ermenteddark tea produced in Yunnan,China. Fermentation is a tea
production style in which the tea leavesundergo microbial ermentation andoxidation aer they are dried and rolled.Tis process is a Chinese specialty calledpu-erh, named aer the trading post ordark tea during imperial China. Tis teascultivation can be traced as ar back as theHan Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE) and wasmade rom the leaves o the broad lea teaplant, Camellia sinensis assamica.
Pu-erh tea has been used in traditionalChinese medicine or generations toinhibit internal dampness (a term used inChinese medicine to describe a buildup ointernal energy due to the spleens inabilityto transorm energy that it receives romthe stomach) and to invigorate the activ-ity o the spleen and stomach. Other tradi-tional uses include removing toxins romthe body, curing dysentery, losing weight,improving eyesight, promoting bloodcirculation and reviving those who dranktoo much alcohol.
For hundreds o years, pu-erh teahas had a place in the practice o tradi-tional Chinese medicine. It is most oenconsumed at meal times to aid in digestionand blood circulation, but pu-erh tea hasalso been used to treat many other condi-tions throughout the years. Pu-erh tea haseven been marketed as a weight loss aidrecently. While studies have not been able
to conclusively prove that pu-erh tea helpsin weight loss, rats given a pu-erh diet havebeen subject to weight loss. More signi-cant, however, have been the lower choles-terol levels discovered in these studies.
Tere is interest in using pu-erh teaor lowering cholesterol because, unlikeother teas, it contains small amounts oa chemical called lovastatin. Lovastatin isa prescription medicine used or reduc-ing cholesterol. Investigators think thatbacteria that sometimes inhabit pu-erh teamay somehow make the lovastatin in the
course o their normal lie cycle. Animalresearch suggests that pu-erh tea mightdecrease certain blood ats called triglyc-erides as well as bad low-density lipo-protein (LDL) cholesterol. It might alsoincrease good high-density lipoprotein(HDL) cholesterol.
One inuential study cited in the Journalo Gerontology tested both ermented andnonermented pu-erh tea on the bloodlipids o rats. Te study concluded thatermented pu-erh tea lowered the lipidsor ats in the blood o rats. Te research inthe study determined that pu-erh tea canbe used to lower the risk o cardiovasculardisorders because it reduces blood lipids.Pu-erh tea also contains antioxidants andother substances that might help protectthe heart and blood vessels.
Te health benets o pu-erh tea havecaptured the attention o the academicand medical community in recent years.
While the evidence has been promimore exploration is warranted to conclusive results. Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350.2. Si wafe/pancake mix into a bowl. Make a well in the center and add milk, eggs and
melted butter. Mix until smooth and ree rom lumps.3. Grease a mini Bundt pan and ll three-ourths ull.4. Place resh strawberries on top o batter (about cup or each).5. Place in oven or 25-30 minutes.
