Nativity Scene

CEIP Ramon Macip - Dolors Granés

What is the Pessebre (Nativity scene)?

The representation of the Birth of Jesus (the 25th of December).

In many houses, people put a small recreation of this scene to commemorate the nativity.

It is usually situated in the hall or in the living room.

It consists on putting a small crib with little figures which represent the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, the Baby Jesus,

the angel, an ox, a mule, the shepherds, the 3 Wise Men…

In Catalunya you can find special and traditional figures in the Nativity scene: el Caganer and el

Pixaner.

El Caganer is a figure of a shepherd who is having a shit.

El Pixaner is more recent, from the last years. It is a figure who represents a shepherd making a pee.

Apart from the figures, the Nativity scene is represented by people.

In many villages and towns, this scene is represented for 3 or 4 days

(usually from 25th of December to the first week of January). This representation lasts 4 o 5 hours.

The most interesting part is when the Three Wise Men give their offerings to the Baby Jesus.
