1492 Christopher Columbus

Called the people he found in the lands he (discovered) explored “Indians,” because he thought he was in the Indies (near China).

1558-1603 Queen Elisabeth

Reigning monarch of England.

Called the “virgin” queen , because she never married.

Walter Raleigh named the new land Virginia after the queen for England.

1588 Lost Colony of Roanoke

Walter Raleigh sent settlers from England to Virginia to set up a colony at Roanoke (now NC).

The Colony failed. All that was left was

the word “Croatan” carved in a tree.

Artifacts Such as

arrowheads, pottery, and other tools that have been found tell a lot about the people who lived in Virginia.
