DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Arrow Rock today has a small (81) and dwindling population. Most of its structures
are either incorporated into Arrow Rock State Park or administered by the Friends
of Arrow Rock, incorporated in 1959. Points of interest include: The Old Tavern
built in 1834 by Judge Joseph Huston, one of the original town commissioners, who
had been born in Philadelphia, and moved to Saline County in 1819. The Tavern
(originally called the City Hotel) is a two-and-a-half story brick structure, to
which Huston added about 1840 a store with a second-floor ballroom. The latter
still retains its unusual stenciled wall decoration. The Tavern is operated by the
Missouri Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and is furnished in
Period antiques.
The Arrow Rock Academy Boarding House, a frame structure built about 1843 which
housed a succession of girls' schools until long after the Civil War. Now the
residence of the Park superintendent.
The Arrow Rock Jail. A small stone building with wrought iron door, built in
1871.
A wing of the George Caleb Bingham House, constructed by Missouri's artist of the
frontier in 1837. Bingham sold the property in 1845.
The Dr. Matthew Walton Hall House, a one-and-a-half story brick house, constructed
about 1845, and owned at an early date by one of the pioneer physicians of Saline
County. Now used as headquarters for the Missouri Society, Daughters of the
American Revolution.
The Arrow Rock Town Spring, in the valley below the town, near the former road
leading from the river landing into the town.
Early Historic Quarry, in the southeast corner of the park.
The Old Court House, a two-room log structure, with woodwork and clapboarding dating
from about 1830, which according to tradition served as the temporary Court House
of Saline County, 1839-40.
Dr. Charles M. Bradford House. Original frame portion built between 1831-1841 by
William G. Miller. Additions were made to the house by Dr. Bradford following his
purchase of the property in 1841. Dr. Bradford, a graduate of the University of
Pennsylvania came to Arrow Rock in 1840, where he married Miss Lavinia Pearson, a
granddaughter of Dr. John Sappington. The house is now owned by Mr. and Mrs.
William H. Miller, who operate an antique shop.
Dr. William Price House. Dr. Price, a native of Maryland, began the practice
of medicine in Arrow Rock, September 24, 1835. He married Mary Ellen Sappington,
a daughter of Dr. John Sappington. He built this handsome brick house about 1838.
Part of the early and perhaps original wooden fence, of ornamental design, remains
along the back yard. Now owned by Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Argubright.

The Arrow Rock Baptist Church, located near the Bingham House, is now used as
a summer repertory theater called the Arrow Rock Lyceum. The theater opens
on July 4th for an eight-week season annually.
Doctors' House, so called for the many physicians who resided there in the
19th and early 20th centuries, is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Williams and
in the tradition of the early dress-makers, now houses the firm of Page One
Fashions, a custom dress-making establishment.
The Black Sheep Inn, located in an ante-bellum house on the outskirts of the
village, is a fine restaurant, open daily except Tuesdays and caters to
parties. Owned and operated by Mr. Taylor Williams and Mr. Jay Turley.
John P. Sites Sunshop and Home. Sites, a native of Virginia, who learned
the trade of gunsmith at Boonville, moved to Arrow Rock in 1844 where he
lived until his death in 1904. His rifles were popular throughout Central
Missouri. His two-story brick shop adjoins his red brick home, both dating
from 1866.
Arrow Rock Friendship Lodge No. 40, I.O.O.F. Hall. Built 1868, with lodge
rooms on the second floor. The first floor was originally occupied by a
newspaper office, where the Saline County Herald was published.
Arrow Rock Lodge No. 55, A.F. & A.M. This lodge was formed in 1842. In
1868 they constructed this brick building with their hall on the second floor,
and the first floor rented for commercial purposes. The first floor is presently
used by the Arrow Rock Craft Club, an organization whcih sells only hand-made
articles and homemade jams and jellies and pickles as well as cakes, pies and
bread.
The Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Built in 1857, now owned by the congregation
of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church of Arrow Rock.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Arrow Rock, the starting point for the traders from Old Franklin and Boon's Lick
who opened the Santa Fe Trail, commemorates the beginning of the Santa Fe trade.
The Missouri River crossing at Arrow Rock figured prominently in the very
early trail-breaking expeditions that opened the West. Traffic was so
great that by 1817 a ferry crossed the river there. Two years later a road
was laid out from the ferry to Cooper's Fort. This road was later incorporated
into the post road from Arrow Rock to Fort Osage, and became the great thoroughfare
of early traders.
Both of the pioneering Becknell expeditions in 1821 and 1822 were organized
at Arrow Rock. Here other major caravans of the early 1820 "s, including the
important one led by Captain William Becknell in 1821, assembled and prepared
for the long journey to Santa Fe.
The rock cliff of Arrow Rock, remains of the old Ferry Road, and the Santa Fe
Spring used by those who rendezvoused there in the early days of the Santa
Fe Trail are preserved in Arrow Rock State Park. The park adjoins the town
of Arrow Rock, which was associated with the later trail days. The town
preserves many structures having historical and cultural association of
later periods and presents a charming and almost unique picture of mid-19th
century frontier village-town architecture and atmosphere of the Mississippi-
Missouri valley region.

An elaborate Square bay has been added to the E facade, probably dating to the 1890 's by is Queen Ann/Eastlake styling. It has a flat roof and two windows facing E. , and attenuated windows on the sides with panels below. Applied decoration includes an undulating motif at the dentil band, brackets, and a paneled frieze. Other window and door openings are trabeated; the entrance having a transom. There is a raking corniee at the eaves. Paint scrappings were sent to Pratt and Lambert and the original colors have been used again to restore the building, though not always in their original places.

concrete piers. The porch has beaded narrow board ceiling and a heavily molded fascia v/ith small brackets. A small window in the 2nd story ped iment has a trabeated surround and is filled v/ith stained glass. An interior chimney set to the M of the central hall ia built of plain brick. On the S facade there is a 1 story bay window set on concrete piers. Corner boards at all corners are made to represent pilasters. Two flat roof additions to the rear appear to have been made immediately after the house v/?s constituted as the' trim matches the main block of the house. On the interior, one enters into a central hall with stairs leading to the 2nd story. Decorative motifs on the square knev/el post match those on the front door. - The rail and balusters are turned. The stairs are enclosed and sre embellished v/ith a panel motif below the stringer. Millwork is richly stained, trabeated; windows are attenuated, reaching to 1' from the floor and most are 1 over 1 with their original glass. The kitchen has been modern ized as well =s some ceilings lowered. An enclosed porch on the rear has extensive use of beaded panelling. All doors are 5 panel v/ith the panels running horizontally; all the original door hardware is intact.

dows and the transom and sidelights of the two doors on the main faca.de =re intact. The original two story ell to the NE has also been removed and/feplaced by a 1 story ell. The interior has not been carefully restored, the mantels no longer exist, except in one upstairs room (W). The original wide board floors do remain in the 2nd story; they sag quite visibly, due to the storage of wheat in these rooms (oral history). According to oral history the timbers for the structure were floated down the "0 giver to a point 1 mile 3 of the house. ^ .
