Long ago, scientists figured out ways to protect us from some of the diseases that make us sick.

They discovered VACCINES!

5

Let’s take a look at how vaccines work.

Sometimes people get sick, but not too sick.BUT, for some people the disease makes them VERY sick.

Either way, both people are protected from getting the sickness again. This is called “immunity.”

With a vaccine, you can get immunity without getting sick at all.

6

Vaccines give us immunity from certain diseases. See what words you can make using the letters from the words:

I created the first vaccine, called the smallpox vaccine, thanks to the help of a cow and a milkmaid!

Like cows helped us make the smallpox vaccine, chickens helped us make the flu vaccine. Flu vaccines were first

made using chicken eggs. Now, we still use eggs to make some flu vaccines, but new discoveries help us make

flu vaccines in other ways too.

Vaccines are made in a few different ways:

Use part ofthe virus.

Use part of the bacteria.

Use dead virus. Use live, weakened virus.

A lot of scientists helped make vaccines over many years. Scientists all over the world today still work

to make vaccines, so we can be healthy.

We developed the first whooping cough vaccine.

I developed the polio vaccine. The public paid for the research by sending dimes to the White House. That was the start of the March of Dimes.

I developed the rubella and rotavirus vaccines while working at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

I worked to develop 9 of the 14 childhood vaccines that most babies get before they are 2 years old.

for getting your vaccines and helping keep diseases outof your community so it is safe for everyone!

Diseases don’t enter communities where there are a lot of vaccinated people. So when you get vaccines, you are also

helping keep diseases out of your community. Thanks for helping to keep your community safe!
