What is Quidditch?

• Remember the exciting sports, Quidditch,

in the famous fiction Harry Potter? All

players ride a broomstick and fly to catch

the balls in this match.

What is Quidditch?

• Now, Quidditch is no longer a fantasy. In

a “Muggle Quidditch” match, ordinary

non-wizard players ride on their

broomsticks to trace after the different

balls on land.

The history of Quidditch

• In 2005, a Wales’ PE teacher Invented

the game.

• In 2005, the first ever real-life Quidditch

game took place at Middlebury College

in Middlebury, VT.

• In 2007, the first Quidditch world cup

was held.

• In 2008, the second World Cup at

Middlebury featured 12 colleges from

around North America and the first

traveling international team, McGill

University from Montreal, Canada.

• In 2009, 21 college teams travelled to

Middlebury for the third annual World

Cup in front of 2,000 spectators.

• In 2010, the International Quidditch

Association was incorporated in Vermont.

• In 2010, 43 colleges and 3 high schools

competed before 15,000 spectators and

over 40 international media outleted at

the fourth World Cup.

• In 2011, the fourth World Cup was held.

The champion was the team of

Middlebury.

• In 2011, there were more than 100

Quidditch teams in the world!

How to play Quidditch?

• In the game, there are 5 balls and 1 ‘ball’.

– 1 Quaffle

a football

– 4 Bludger

a volleyball

– 1 Snitch

a runner with a tennis ball inside a yellow sock tucked into his waistband. The runner will run around the stadium and don’t let the Seeker to catch the sock.

How to play Quidditch?

• In each team, there are 7 members.

– 3 Chasers

responsible for passing the Quaffle and

scoring points by throwing the Quaffle

through one of the opponent's goals.

← Both of them are chasers

How to play Quidditch?

• In each team, there are 7 members.

– 1 Keeper

the goal protector (similar to goalkeeper in

soccer) and must try to block attempts to

score by the opposing team's Chasers.

• In each team, there are 7 members.

– 2 Beaters

attempt to hit the opposing team's players

with Bludgers and attempt to block the

Bludgers from hitting their team's players.

How to play Quidditch?

• In each team, there are 7 members.

– 1 Seeker

attempt to catch the Snitch. Seeker is able to

search for the snitch in the entire game. They

often chase throughout the college campus.

The rules of Quidditch

1. If the Bludgers hit the Chasers, the Chasers must let go the Quaffle.

2. If the Seeker catch the Snitch, his team will get 30 marks and the match ends.

3. If any player is injured,

there will be a break.

4. All players must ride on

a broomstick.
