PrefaceThe aim of developing and revising the school curricula and textbooks is tomake education purposeful, relevant and functional. Education should impartthe desired knowledge and skills for students. Apart from these, it impartsvalues and moral standards such as nationalistic feelings, discipline, self-relianceand basic functional skills of language, maths, science, information and health.Along with these, students are expected to appreciate arts, tolerance amongdifferent languages, religions and cultures. In relation to this, there has beenan increasing demand for English to start at the beginning of primaryeducation. To meet this demand, the government decided to introduce Englishas a subject for Grade One, starting in the academic year 2003.
The present English textbook for Grade One contains the materials that givechildren enjoyable activities for learning English. Language skills areintroduced systematically throughout this book, focusing particularly onlistening and speaking skills for this grade. It is believed that the lessons andexercises given in the book will give children enough opportunities for prac-tising different language skills. It is equally true that the book in itself is notadequate to achieve its set goals unless there is an active teaching andlearning environment. Hence, it is expected that the teachers will follow theinstructions given in this book. This book, originally written by RanjanaBajagain and revised by Arun Kiran Pradhan, Christine Stone, Maya Raiand Bishnu Prasad Parajuli in 2003. Its layout design was done by NavindraRajbhandari and Himalaya Gautam. Illustrations were done by Abindra ManShrestha. Curriculum Development Centre would like to thank the membersof English Subject Committee and other subject experts for their help indeveloping this book.
Generally a textbook is an important tool for teaching and learning. It isexpected that experienced teachers and enthusiastic students can achievethe learning outcomes of the curriculum by using this book along with variousother resource materials. In practice, a textbook is used and considered asthe main resource material. Therefore, attempts have been made to bringthis book up to the standard. Even then the book might have some shortcomings;so teachers, parents, students and all concerned are requested to send theirconstructive suggestions to improve this book in the future editions.
