¡ Student’s do need to be aware of their strengths and weakness.

WHY IS PATHWAY PLANNING IMPORTANT?

¡ Student’s are beginning to develop individual pathways to a career. This pathway will be different for different individual students.

¡ There are often many pathways to a particular career.

¡ Students need to develop their own self awareness and awareness of career opportunities.

¡ Creating a Pathway plan will make subject selection a stress free process

WHAT IS THE VCE?

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is a single certificate requiring students to satisfactorily complete at least 16 units of study. The VCE is a two year course that is normally undertaken in Years 11 and 12 of secondary school.

Students need to be aware that the VCE is a two year course and that Units 1 & 2 studied in Years 10 and 11 do contribute to the overall assessment and satisfactory completion of the minimum requirements of 16 units to be awarded the VCE. School Assessed Coursework and Examination grades for Units 3 & 4 are used to determine the ATAR at the end of Year 12.

HOW DO I RECEIVE THE VCE AWARD?

To be awarded the VCE, students must satisfactorilycomplete at least 16 units. The 16 units must include:

-at least three Units of English (2 Units must be fromUnit 3 &4)-at least three sequences of Units 3 and 4 studies otherthan English

VCE AT AL SIRAAT COLLEGE

u A three year course students undertake in Year 10, Years 11 and 12.

u Students begin their VCE program in Year 10.

u Extensive range of subjects.

u Each subject consists of 4 Units.

u A Unit is completed over the course of a semester.

VCE AT AL SIRAAT COLLEGEYEAR 10

One Unit 1 & 2 subject is completed in Year 10

YEAR 11

5 other Unit 1 & 2 subjects

+

Continue a Unit 3 & 4 subject completed in Year 11

YEAR 12

5 Units 3 & 4 are completed in Year 12.

In total the student completes VCE with 6 Subjects

VCE PROGRAM EXAMPLE

YEAR 10Unit 1 & 2 General Maths is completed in Year 10

YEAR 11Unit 1 & 2 English + Legal Studies + Psychology + Business Management + VET Business

+ Unit 3 & 4 Further Maths completed in Year 11

YEAR 12Units 3 & 4 English + Legal Studies + Psychology + Business Management + VET Business are

completed in Year 12.

In total the student completes VCE with 6 Subjects

PLANNING A STUDY PROGRAM

¡ Students in Year 9 select the VCE subject for Year 10

¡ Students in Year 10 select their VCE subjects for Year 11 & 12

¡ Subject selection is based on what the student wishes to study at University, realistic capabilities and interests

¡ Subject offering is determined by student numbers

WHAT IS VET?

¡ Vocational Education and Training

¡ Students who complete all or part of a nationally recognisedqualification may receive credit towards satisfactory completion of their VCE

¡ Students who choose this subject and complete the subject over Year 11 and 12 will:

- receive a Certificate III qualification

- credit towards their VCE ATAR• Students can study a max. of twoVET Subjects in VCE

YEAR 10 ELECTIVES

¡ At Al Siraat College, Year 10 students can take advantage of the opportunity to select from a wide variety of Year 10 electives.

¡ Year 10 Electives are a pathway to your VCE Subject, you must select your Electives very carefully to ensure that you will be considered for the right VCE subject in Year 11

¡ For example, if you want to do Year 11 Chemistry, you must undertake the Year 10 Chemistry Elective

¡ Your performance in Year 10 Electives will also contribute to your entry into the VCE subject in Year 11.

-Year 10 Maths /Foundation Maths (by selection only based on performance in Year 9 Maths)

2. One VCE Subject (VCE General Maths will be available by selection only at Year 10 level)

3. Year 10 Electives- students must choose 4 electives for each Semester

Students must choose 4 electives for each Semester. Electives are a pathway to the VCE subject (please see handbook)* Year 10 Advanced Maths is compulsory for students who wish to undertake Year 11 Mathematical Methods. Students who do not do Year 10 Advanced Maths cannot do Year 11 Mathematical Methods.

2. One Unit 3 & 4 Subject (continuation from Unit 1 & 2 selection in Year 10)

HOW ARE SUBJECTS SELECTED?

¡ Subjects selected must meet the pre-requisite requirements of the University.

¡ Example: Bachelor of Civil Engineering (RMIT)

¡ A study score of at least 30 in English and a study score of at least 20 in Mathematical Methods (CAS).

¡ Example

¡ Bachelor of Accounting (La Trobe University)

¡ VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English.
