At Akaroa there were about 12 of us on the dolphin cruisearound the harbour. First the boat went to an interestingfeature called “Elephant Rock”, which looked a bit like theone I’d seen in Guilin. On board was “Murf” the dolphindog. His job was to let everyone know when dolphins werecoming up. They are Hector’s or New ZealandDolphins, the world’s rarest and smallest ocean mammal. They are sometimes called “pandas of the sea”. They weighabout 50 kg and can swim very fast. Netting has beenstopped all around the Banks Peninsular to protect them. They kept up with the boat for a few hundred metres whileit was travelling at 20 km/h.
