Electricityisthemostflexibleandefficientsourceofenergytopowermankind.Ifweimprovetheexploitationofsustainableenergysources,electricityissuretoplayaleadingrolethroughouttheforeseeablefuture.

Inthedecadestocome,arevolutionwillunfoldinthegenerationanddeliveryofelectricalpower,drivenbythelargescaleintroductionofrenewableanddistributedpowergeneration,theneedforenvironmentally-friendlyandsustainablecomponentsandtheliberalisationoftheenergymarkets.Electricalpowerengineersareneededinordertodesignnewcomponentswithaneyetowardssustainablematerialsandefficientconversionprocesses,aswellastointegratethemintoasmartandadaptableelectricityinfrastructure.

TheMasterofScienceprogrammeinElectricalEngineeringatTUDelftoffersthetrack:ElectricalPowerEngineering.

Ifyouareinterestedingettinganindepthunderstandingofthechallengesthatelectricalengineersmustovercome,youmustjointhistrack.Theprogrammecoversawiderangeofissues,includingrenewableenergy,smartgrids,environmentallyfriendlymaterialtechnologies,thedecentralisationofpowergeneration,power-systemsoperations,powerelectronicsandelectricalmachines.TheDepartmentofElectricalSustainableEnergywillprovideyouwithanumberofoutstandingresearchfacilities,includingtheHigh-VoltageLaboratory,theSustainableEnergyLaboratory:DENlab,aReal-TimeDigitalSimulatorandthePowerProcessing(ElectricalMachinesandElectronicConversion)Laboratory.TheprogrammestartswithseveralcompulsorycoursesthatprovideyouwiththebasicsofElectricalPowerEngineering.Duringthesecondsemesterofthefirstyear,youcanchooseanin-depthspecialisationbasedontheprofilessuggestedbelow.

Iamveryinterestedintheworldofelectricityandtheelectricalnetworkandthat’swhyIdecidedtodoaMScinElectricalPowerEngineering.ImovedtotheNetherlandstwoyearsago,afterIfinishedmyBachelor'sdegreeinParis.IwaseagertostudyatTUDelftastheuniversityisknowntobeoneofthebesttechnicaluniversitiesinEurope.TheMSctrackElectricalPowerEngineeringexceededmyexpectationssinceIreallyenjoyedthepossibilitytoorientatemyselfinsomanydirections.Youcanreallymakeyoureducationyourownbychoosingexactlythecoursesthatinterestsyouthemost.Therefore,myadvicefornewstudentsoftheEPEtrackwouldbe:havea

Thetrackoffersthefollowingspecialisations:

HighVoltagefocusesonHighVoltageTransmissionNetworksforlargescaleimplementationofrenewableenergysources(solar,wind,wave),developmentofintelligentmaterials,monitoringofHVsystems,andtheoptimizationandcontrollabilityofHVtransmissiongrids.

SmartACandDCgridsfocusesonthegeneration,transmissionanddistributionofelectricalenergy,anditexplorestechnologicaloptionsforthedesignandoperationoffutureintelligentpowergrids,whichwillbesubjecttosustainabilityandreliabilityconstraints.Thetopicsofmicrogrids,e-mobilityandsmartcitiesarealsocoveredwithinthisprofile.

PowerElectronics&ElectricalMachinescoverselectricalpowerprocessingandconversion,withanemphasisonimprovingefficiencyinindustrialprocesses,offices,homesandE-mobility.Italsocoverstheoperationanddesignofelectricalmachines.

SolarEnergyaddressesallaspectsofphotovoltaictechnology,fromthedesignofaPVcelltotheimplementationofPVsystemsintheelectricitygrid.Studentsarefreetocomposetheirownspecialisationsbychoosingfromalistofcourses,inconsultationwiththeirthesissupervisors.

I’mPavolBauerheadoftheDCsystemsandStoragegroup(DC&S).WeinvestigatesystemintegrationofrenewableenergysourcesandenergystorageinDCnetworksandsystemsandfutureDCtransmissiongrid.ExamplesincludeexcitingapplicationssuchassmartcitieswithDCmicro-gridsandrenewableenergysourcessuchassolarandwindenergyandenergystorageintheformofelectricvehicles.TheintegrationofrenewableenergyviaDCSystems&StorageDCnetworksofferslowercostandhigher

efficiencyasmostofthesourcesandloadsarehavingDCcharacter.Chargingelectricvehiclesdirectlyfromphotovoltaicenergy,theimpactofE-mobilityonthegridandsolutionsforcontactlesscharging(stationaryandonroad)ofelectricvehiclesaresolutionsforsmartcitiesofthefuture.Storageplaysanimportantroleinfuturesmartcitiesintheformofelectricvehiclesbutalsobeyond.Understandingdifferentstorageoptionsandtheirbehaviourisessentialforthesystemintegrationofrenewablesources.FutureDCtransmissionHVDCgridsarealsoinvestigated.TheDC&SlaboratoryhasascaledsetupofaHVDCgridcontrolledbyarealtimesimulator(OpalRT).HVDCpowerconversiontechnologyandcontrolofsystemse.g.withwindenergyarehereexperimentallytestedandverified.HighVoltagediagnostics&monitoringandHighVoltageDCMaterials&ComponentsarealsoinvestigatedandexperimentallytestedinHVthelaboratory.TheDC&Sgroupiswellconnectedtotheindustrywithalargenumberofnationalandinternationalresearchprojects,whichofferstudentspossibilitytojointheresearchteamandcontributetoafuturesustainabledevelopment.

CareeropportunitiesforElectricalPowerEngineersareexceptionallygood,bothintheNetherlandsandabroad.Graduatescanchoosefromanumberofcareerpaths,withattractivepositionsopentostartingengineersintheareasofproductdesign,consultancyandresearch.Athigherlevels,electricalpowerengineersoftenmoveintomanagementpositions.Electricalpowerengineersarefoundinlargercompanies(includingdistributionandtransmissionsystemoperators),aswellasinsuchprominentfirmsasSiemens,ALSTOM,ABB,ShellandPhilips.Theyalsofindemploymentinresearchinstitutes(e.g.TNOandECN),hightechcompaniesandconsultancyfirms(e.g.KEMA).Somegraduateschoosetocontinuetheireducationandpursuedoctoralstudies.
