COLLECTION OVERVIEW
Scope and contents note
The material in this collection relates primarily to the audio material collected by Alice Moyle
from 1959 to 1988 and held in the AIATSIS audio archives. While most audio documentation
is held by the audio archives as supplementary material to audio items, this collection was
seen to hold particular significance, and that its arrangement, description and housing in the
library – and therefore its discoverability – would benefit future users of the audio collection.
Thus, this collection gains much of its context when used in conjunction with Alice Moyle’s
audio collection. This audio material is referenced as much as possible in this finding aid.
All material within this collection was collected and prepared by Alice Moyle as well as
assistants Jill Stubington, Grace Koch, Alexandra Campbell and Graham Pillans. The audio
recordings referenced in this collection were collected by various recordists between 1898
and 1980, in many different places within Australia and Torres Strait. The material produced
as documentation or related material to these recordings was prepared between 1959 and
1988, while Alice Moyle was either an employee of AIATSIS, an independent researcher or
an AIAS Research Fellow and PhD candidate at Monash University.
The appendix to this finding aid allows the user to link the manuscript material with the audio
material collected by Alice Moyle and held at AIATSIS, in relation to audio recorded on
Groote Eyelandt. The intent behind preparing this guide to the songs within the Alice Moyle
audio and manuscript collection is to provide a link between the manuscript material in this
collection and the audio recordings it refers to. Further explanation and guidance for the
appendix is provided with the table itself. Access to the audio material referenced in this
collection can be obtained by contacting the audiovisual archive at
collectionenquiry@aiatsis.gov.au.
Provenance
Series’ 2, 4, 6 and 7 in this collection have been held by AIATSIS as part of the audio
collection since its creation by Alice Moyle, as an AIATSIS employee and grant recipient.
Series’ 1, 3 and 5 were brought to AIATSIS from Alice Moyle’s residence in Sydney by
Grace Koch and Tom Eccles between 2000 and 2005.
No material in this collection was accessioned by AIATSIS’ registration processes, and
therefore no deposit forms exist for this material.

Archivist’s note
The arrangement, description and re-housing of this collection, and production of this finding
aid, was completed by Angela Schilling in 2019 with the assistance of Grace Koch and Jill
Stubington. Information found in Alice Moyle Collection: Documentation Report, produced by
Barry McDonald in 2003, greatly assisted in understanding materials across both manuscript
and audio formats, and that which was previously undescribed yet located at AIATSIS.
McDonald’s Report was instrumental to this finding aid, linking the documentation and
manuscript material to the audio held in the archives. The rebuilding of this collection was
undertaken in collaboration with Jeni Wie and James Rutledge of the Audiovisual archiving
team at AIATSIS.
For materials removed from the collection or disposed of, please refer to separated materials
listed above.
Biographical Note
Alice Moyle (1908-2005) was a founding member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal
Studies and a pioneer in Australian ethnomusicology and the study of Aboriginal music.
After completing a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne in 1930, Alice Moyle
went on to become a music critic and teacher, her talents lying particularly in the piano, the
cello, education and journalism. In the late 1940s Moyle returned to formal academic studies
and by 1954 had completed her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) at the University of Sydney. Her first
interest lay in the music of Ancient Greece, but through the influence of academics at the
University such as AP Elkin, she soon after became interested in the ethnography and study
of Aboriginal music in Australia. Guided by this interest, Moyle completed her Master of Arts
(Hons) in 1957 and her thesis took the shape of a study of Elkin’s recordings of Aboriginal
music from the Northern Territory. During this time she was also working as a teaching
assistant in the University of Sydney’s newly formed Music Department.
Alice Moyle undertook her first field trip in 1958-59, which was entirely self-funded. She
continued teaching at the University of Sydney until 1963, before helping to establish the
Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies (AIAS) in 1963-64. Working there as a Research
Officer and then at Monash University as an AIAS Research Fellow until 1973, Moyle
undertook many field trips to Cape York, the Gulf of Carpentaria, Arnhem Land, the
Kimberleys, Groote Eyelandt and Central Australia between 1959 and 1980. She recorded
over 400 tapes in this time, many forming the basis of her PhD which was awarded to her in
1975 from Monash University. This thesis would be the first systematic identification and

analysis of the musical stylings found in Central and Northern Australia, contextualising them
within instrumental, linguistic and melodic patterns.
During her time at AIAS, Alice Moyle worked with many linguists such as Arthur Capell, Ken
Hale and Geoffrey O’Grady in translating a corpus of recorded works which were transcribed
from performance to speech. Moyle also worked with ethnochoreologist Elphine Allen (later
Mostert) on filming and notating dance and music movements on Groote Eyelandt in 1969. It
was on Groote Eyelandt that she worked closely with Gula Lalara, a performer and elder of
the Anindilyakwa people who took much time to explain the stories behind the songs as well
as their musical style. Linguist Judith Stokes collaborated on this material to begin a strong
body of work and analysis.
Working into the 1990s, Alice Moyle had a meticulous attention to detail and would often
make several drafts and copies of her works. As computers entered the realm of academia,
and along with assistant ethnomusicologist Grace Koch and academics at ANU, Moyle was
instrumental in setting up computerised databases and indexes which contained and
described her research and collections.
Alice Moyle also scanned resources nationally and internationally for other publications and
works which used Aboriginal songs and music, and created a catalogue of these works. She
collected recordings by other ethnomusicologists and anthropologists working with
Aboriginal language and music, and compiled many indexes of these recordings.
Moyle was instrumental in setting up the Sound Archive at AIAS in the early 1960s, played a
key role in the setting up of the Musicologists Society of Australia, was one of the founding
members of the Australian branch of the International Council of Traditional Music. Moyle
became a Member of the Order of Australia – General Division in 1977. She received an
honorary Doctor of Music from the University of Sydney in 1989 and another from the
University of Melbourne in 1995. Alice Moyle passed away in 2005.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
Series 1 Correspondence 1963-1964
MS 5207/2 This series includes correspondence from 1963 and 1964,
predominantly between Alice Moyle and AIAS administrative
assistant C.M. Burton. During this time, Alice Moyle was appointed
the position of music research officer at AIAS while residing in and
working from Sydney. This correspondence also relates to the setting
up and staffing of the newly formed AIAS sound archive, some of
Moyle's early field trips, budgets and funding, position titles and
duties, composition of a questionnaire for sound recordists and
equipment purchase and maintenance.
For more Alice Moyle correspondence, see MS 3501, Series 1.

Series 2 Audition Sheets
MS 5207/2 These audition sheets correspond to all Alice Moyle's own field tapes
held in the AIATSIS archive, as well as some recorded by other
collectors, and are dated from 1959 to 1988. The audition sheets
were completed by Alice Moyle, Grace Koch and Jill Stubington. The
subseries are organised either chronologically or based on activity.
‘FT’ refers to Field Tape, which is the tape used to record the song or
language elicitation in the first instance. ‘AM tape’ is the name given
to the dubbed tapes which held compilations of Aboriginal songs,
prepared by Jill Stubington and Alice Moyle (for more information see
Content and Scope notes or Series 4). ‘AIATSIS archive number’
refers to the preservation copy used for current access at AIATSIS.
The field tape number (FT) is in the top left hand corner of the
audition sheet, where relevant the AM tape numbers for the songs
MS 5207 Alice Moyle Audio Documentation
10
are marked in the far right column of the sheet, and the
corresponding AIATSIS archive number is often annotated on the top
of the sheet.
Appendix 1 is an index of songs recorded on Groote Eyelandt,
collected by Moyle, CP Mountford, David Turner and Judith Stokes.
This document links the songs to their numbered notations and
audition sheets in MS 5207, as well as their ‘AM’ number. Please
refer to Appendix 1 for an explanation of how to use the index.
Although audition sheets are numbered chronologically by field tape,
some field tapes have an additional marker according to the type of
recorder used (eg CEB, Butoba or Nagra); some field tapes are
marked by 'cassette'.
Subseries 13 holds audition sheets and other describing documents
related to audio collected or used by Moyle, not in this original ‘Alice
Moyle’ documentation structure.

Series 3 Groote Eyelandt Documentation
MS 5207/3 Alice Moyle first visited Groote Eyelandt in 1962 and returned many
times throughout her career to record and undertake research on
clan songs from the region. Between her own recordings and those
of Mountford and Turner in 1948 and 1969 respectively, Alice Moyle
identified and notated roughly 337 Groote Eyelandt songs, all
represented in these series through either notation or analyses, or
both. This series contains notebooks from Groote Eyelandt visits,
notations and motivic analyses of Groote Eyelandt songs, linguistic
work on songs by linguist Judith Stokes who Alice Moyle worked with
on Groote Eyelandt song and dance, work prepared by Canberra
School of Music Student Alexandra Campbell and notation by
assistant Graham Pillans.
Much of this series relates to MS 3501 series 22-24 and MS 3518
Boxes 10-11. The audio which these notations directly relate to can
be found in several different audio collections. Appendix 1 of this
finding aid links notations from this series to their corresponding
AIATSIS audio file number, for ease of access.
This material was not originally archived with MS 3501, pending the
results of a grant application submitted to the Groote Eylandt Council
for the completion of a manuscript with joint authorship by Dr Moyle
and the linguist Judith Stokes on Groote Eylandt clan songs. This
project was never completed.

Series 5 British Institute of Recorded Sound (BIRS), 1978-
1985
MS 5207/5 In September 1978, Alice Moyle visited the British Institute of
Recorded Sound in London. There, she spent two weeks listing,
analysing and notating an uncatalogued part of the Sir James Frazer
Collection: nine wax cylinders which held recordings of songs from
Australia and Torres Strait, recorded from 1898 to 1914. Moyle
facilitated the transfer of these onto tape in 1979, knowing their

importance to Australian and international ethnomusicology. By
1985, she and Grace Koch had facilitated the transfer of these
recordings from BIRS (by then part of the British Library) to AIATSIS,
and the dubbed recordings are now held in the AIATSIS sound
archive as BNA_01, BNA_03 and BNA_04. This series holds audio
documentation for these recordings and Alice's processes from 1978
to 1985 including audition sheets, notes, notations and analyses,
listings and correspondence.

Series 6 Alice Moyle Song Index
MS 5207/6 This index was completed by Grace Koch on behalf of Alice Moyle,
sometime after Jill Stubington had completed the AM song Catalogue
(Series 4 of this collection). This index includes one whole set of
Aboriginal songs that Alice knew to be recorded at the time, identified
and arranged by song title. Some songs are unidentified and these
are marked by a 'goose egg' (circle with diagonal stripe through it). In
most cases, index cards are sorted according to geographic region
and then alphabetised. ‘County and Western’ songs are the only
category marked by genre. Some songs are grouped into smaller
groups of FT numbers and then alphabetised. Index cards can
include: English name for song, Aboriginal name for song, song
owner, vocal and instrument components, number of items with
same title, auditory information, place of recording, state division,
year, collector, AIATSIS archive number and side, clock timing, item
numbers as given on audition sheet, performer's name(s),
performer’s language group(s). These entries are the predecessors
of the Computerised Index of Songs - Area Y, by Alice Moyle and
Grace Koch (Series 7 of this collection).

Series 7 Area Y Computerised Index
MS 5207/7 This index was prepared as a prototype or 'pilot project' by Alice
Moyle and Grace Koch. While computerised indexes of song words
had already been made by Alice Moyle and Grace Koch, this project
indexes the song rather than the song word, is localised (Cape York)
and has several points of access. The microfiche version (Item 1)
was prepared specifically to present the index at the 1981
International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives
conference in Budapest. The larger index (blue bound copy) is the
full version of the index, to be used with the instructions given in the
preface. All data was taken from audition sheets held in this
collection. Draft copies of the preface for Item 1 are held in MS 3501,
Series 10. The original microfiche for Item 1 is held at AIATSIS with
the call number MFE/B29, and another copy in MS 3501, Series 10,
item 6(a). As AIATSIS archive tape numbers are listed throughout
both indexes, these resources are still of use to those who would like
to access the audio of Aboriginal songs that are held in the AIATSIS
archive, as long as they were held at the time of the completion of
this index (1981).
Both items held in Folio Box.

Aboriginal Song Words, second edition, completed by Alice Moyle in
1973 and held at MS 307. The preface to the Index explains how to
read the index, as well as apply the information in both the numerical
and alphabetical source lists. The sources referenced in these
indexes are held at both MS 308 and MS 3501, Series 20, Items 1-
306.The Key to the Sound Recordings guides the user between the
