Who can remember the name of the artist who painted this picture?Henri Julien Rousseau painted the picture in 1910.

• The artist Henri Rousseau used different
shades and tints of colour to make his
pictures look three dimensional (3D).
• The leaves and monkeys that are painted in
light colours look like they are nearer to
you.
• The leaves and monkeys that are painted in
dark colours look further away from you.
Rousseau used darker shades of colour to create
shadows in his picture.
This is why his picture looks three dimensional!
Compare the leaves in Rousseau’s “Monkeys in
the Orange Grove” with Matisse’s “Black Leaf on
Green Background” (1952).
