Common Master Schedule Models

Traditional Academic Schedule

• Single-period, daily schedule • Classes meet daily, Monday through Friday • Students attend 6, 7, or 8 academic classes each

day, during two semesters • Most widely used form of scheduling in the

United States

“Block Scheduling in Texas Public High Schools.” Texas Education Agency Office of Policy Planning and Research Division of Research and Evaluation. Report Number 13. Sept. 1999.

Block Schedule

According to the Texas Education Agency:

Broadly, block scheduling is a school scheduling practice that organizes at least part of the school day into larger blocks of time (class periods lasting longer than the traditional 50 minutes).

• Numerous variations exist.

• Each class meets for approximately 90 minutes each

• On an 8 course schedule, students meet 4 classes each day

• Variance: “Modified” A/B Block Schedule • One or more courses (singletons) meet daily in the

traditional single-period format
