MIDI SEQUENCING TECHNIQUES FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE PRACTICE Seth Bashford, Dr. Scott Anderson - University of Nebraska, Lincoln

Future Work

•  Pilot study involving student participation with automated piano accompaniment would determine efficacy of large-scale MIDI sequencing.

•  Students would be given access to relevant MIDI sequences for their instrumental/vocal works. Score Scanning Software

Score Transcription and MIDI Sequencing

Solutions

•  Students listen to professional recordings and emulate the style in isolated practice.

•  Students listen to recordings via

headphones or speakers and play or sing in sync simultaneously.

•  Neither solution offers interaction with a real-time acoustic piano instrument.

•  Glenn Korff School of Music houses several Yamaha Disklavier Pianos with MIDI communication capability.

•  Access to piano score MIDI files and compatible audio software enable students to practice solo works with piano accompaniment in real-time.

Progress Rehearsal Challenges

•  Student musicians lack practical rehearsal options for preparing solo works with piano accompaniment.

•  Degree recitals require

demonstration of musical versatility, often necessitating the aid of piano accompaniment.

•  Regular rehearsals with competent

pianists demand extensive time and monetary costs.

•  Manual score transcription produces accurate results but costs significant time.

•  Scanning software demonstrates high accuracy and superior time efficiency.

Acknowledgment

This work was supported by a UCARE grant at UNL.

•  Nineteen piano scores have been transcribed into Finale, exported as MIDI files, and processed in digital audio sequencing software.

•  Investigation and testing of score scanning software has been conducted.

•  PhotoScore Ultimate performs at 99.5% accuracy with high speed processing.
