Word Basics
• Standard toolbar has icons where you can perform different tasks such as saving a document, indenting a paragraph, using paragraph markers, change page width, etc.
• View choices allow you to view Word in Normal, Web Layout, Print, and Outline Views.
Beginning Word
Open Word– Scroll down the page
Get familiar with menu commands– Some menu commands have short-cuts listed
beside them
Arrows on Menus – Click on the arrows– Mean that there are more commands below
Customizing Toolbars
Many toolbars displaying shortcut buttons are also available to make editing and formatting quicker and easier. Select View|Toolbars from the menu bar to select the toolbars.
The toolbars that are already displayed on the screen are checked.

Add a toolbar simply by clicking on the name.
Toolbars and Commands tabs allow you to customize and choose which toolbars and buttons you want displayed.
Customizing Commands1. Highlight command categories in the
Categories box choices will change in the Commands box to the right.
2. Select command you would like to add to the toolbar by selecting it in the Commands box.
3. Drag command with the mouse to desired location on the toolbar and release the mouse button.
4. Remove a button from the toolbar by clicking and dragging the button off the toolbar.
Shortcut Menus
These features allow you to access various Word commands faster than using the options on the menu bar.
View shortcut menus by right-clicking with the mouse.
Options on the shortcut menu will vary depending on the element that was right-clicked.
