OAKLAND ATHLETICS (48-30)RHP Jesse Chavez (6-4, 2.71)

vs.MIAMI MARLINS (39-40)

RHP Anthony DeSclafani (1-2, 7.59)

MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FLFriday, June 27, 2014 – 7:10 P.M.

FISH BITESThe Marlins conclude their fi rst-half home slate with a six-game homestand, beginning tonight with the fi rst of three games against the American League’s Oakland Athletics. Rookie right-hander Anthony DeSclafani is making his fi fth career start, and he will go up against A’s right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez, who is making his second career start and ninth appearance against the Marlins. After an off-day Monday, the homestand will continue on Tuesday night, with the Fish hosting NL-rival Philadelphia for three games. Tonight continues a run of 17 straight games for Miami (5-9), a stretch that includes 13 of the 17 at home. Miami will end the fi rst half of the season on the road, going to St. Louis (July 4-6), Arizona (July 7-9) and the Mets (July 11-13). Tonight’s ceremonial fi rst pitches will be thrown out by Jack Reynor (actor; Transformers: Age of Extinction), Rob Dandrea and Tom Zur, with the National Anthem being performed by Samantha Estis.

ABOUT LAST NIGHTThe Marlins dropped a heartbreaker in 14 innings to the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-3. All three Marlins runs came via solo home runs: Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the third, Giancarlo Stanton in the fourth and Marcell Ozuna in the seventh. Ozuna’s homer put Miami up, 3-2, but the Phillies scored an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. Stanton was the only Marlin to record a multi-hit game, fi nishing 2x4 with two walks. Tom Koehler started for Miami and held Philadelphia to two runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out six over 6.0 innings. Chris Hatcher (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up a walk-off home run to Chase Utley after going 2.1 scoreless innings prior to the 14th.

TRANSACTIONSThe Marlins today optioned INF Justin Bour to Triple-A New Orleans and recalled LHP Brian Flynn from NOLA. Flynn posted a 7-5 record with one complete game and a 3.56 ERA (91.0 IP/36 ER) in 16 starts for the Zephyrs. He has al-lowed three-or-fewer earned runs in 14 of his 16 starts this season.

VS. THE ATHLETICSMiami and Oakland are meeting for the fi rst time since 2011 and the fi rst time in Miami since 2003. The Marlins are 5-4 all-time vs. Oakland, going 2-1 at home in 2003, 1-2 in Oakland in 2008 and 2-1 in Oakland in 2011.

MARLINS IN INTERLEAGUEMiami started its 2014 Interleague slate with an 8-0 record before dropping the series fi nale against the Texas Rang-ers on June 11 at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Miami swept Seattle in a three-game set from April 18-20, swept a four-game home-and-home series against Tampa Bay and won the fi rst of two against Texas. The loss to the Rangers snapped a 13-game Interleague win streak for Miami, the longest ever by a National League team. The win streak equaled the longest all-time, done previously by the Yankees (2003-04) and Tampa Bay (2004).The Fish have an overall Interleague record of 157-142, and lay claim to the best winning percentage (.525) among National League teams. Despite going 37-43 in Interleague Play since 2010, Miami has the most all-time Interleague wins among National League clubs; Washington is second with 153. The Fish lead all NL clubs in doubles (551) and runs scored (1,383), and are tied for fi rst in RBI (1,307). They rank second in hits (2,654) and are tied for third in triples (57). The pitching staff leads all NL Clubs in complete games (21); ranks second in saves (79); fourth in ERA (4.17); has allowed the second-fewest home runs (258); and ranks fi fth in strikeouts (1,989).

SOLO ACTSIn last night’s 14-inning affair, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna each homered for the Fish, accounting for all three of Miami’s runs. It was the ninth time in Marlins history that the Fish recorded as many as three runs in a game, all on solo home runs. The last time it happened was on August 27, 2009, in a 10-3 loss to the New York Mets, when Chris Coghlan hit two and Dan Uggla connected for the other.

CLIMBING THE LADDERLast night, Giancarlo Stanton added to his National League-leading home run total, connecting for his 21st of the season. With the home run, he tied Miguel Cabrera for fourth on the Marlins all-time list, with 138. He trails Dan Ug-gla (154), Hanley Ramirez (148) and Mike Lowell (143). Stanton reached the mark in 568 career games, becoming the 10th fastest in MLB history to reach 138 home runs. Ryan Howard had 175 HR over his fi rst 568 games, followed by Ralph Kiner (149), Eddie Mathews (148), Mark McGwire (144), Bob Horner (143), Albert Pujols (142), Willie Mays (140), Chuck Klein (139) and Joe DiMaggio (139).

RIGHT ONCasey McGehee has hit right-handed pitching at a .336 clip (82x244) this season, the seventh-best average against RHP in the Majors, and third in the National League. He leads the Majors in hits off righties, ahead of Andrew McCutchen (80), Melky Cabrera (78) and Miguel Cabrera (78).

BREAK POINTGiancarlo Stanton, with 21 homers and 59 RBI, is one six Marlins players to hit 20+ homers with 50+ RBI before the break. Mike Lowell, who did it twice (2003, 2004), holds the club marks for home runs and RBI before the break, both coming in 2003, with 28 home runs and 76 RBI in 93 games prior to the break. The other Marlins to reach 20/50 before the break were: Gary Sheffi eld, 1996 (25/62); Dan Uggla, 2008 (23/59); Cliff Floyd, 2001 (21/70); Miguel Cabrera, 2004 (20/59). Lowell, Sheffi eld and Floyd are the only Marlins to record 20+ home runs and 60+ RBI before the break.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNEMiami began the season playing well at home, while struggling on the road. Over their fi rst 25 home games, the Marlins went 19-6 with a team batting average of .295, while going 3-15 with a .211 average in 18 road contests. Things have taken a turn recently, with the Fish going just 6-12 over their last 18 home games, batting .221 over that span, while posting an 11-7 mark and .268 average in their last 18 road contests.
