Community-wide Energy Efficiency Campaign: Resulted in a reduction of 7,761 metric tons of CO2e and$1,413,796 a year in energy savings.

Water-use Efficiency Campaign: Resulted in an unprecedented decline in consumption from 158 to 134 gallons per capita per day over the last five years.

Power It Down Challenge Employee behavioral campaign at two pilot buildings:• Stephen P. Clark Government Center (SPCC)• Richard E. Gerstein (REG) Courthouse

SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS PROGRAM

LEED certified office buildings use 25-30% less energy than conventional office buildings.

- There are over 2 million sq. ft. of new or renovated “green” space currently planned for the County (31 qualifying projects spanning 8 departments). - This translates to energy savings of around $20 million over the next 20 years and a reduction of around 300 million lbs CO2e.

Electricity Master Plan• County government’s electric energy

footprint represents about 10% of the total electricity consumed community-wide.

• County government’s electric energy use costs taxpayers over $100 million annually.

OBJECTIVE: develop an energy management strategy to meet the 20% electricity reduction goal from 2007 levels by 2014.

DESCRIPTION: systemic approach to efficient energy use within County operations addressed at the enterprise (macro) and department (micro) levels.

Enterprise level: apply energy accounting software, coordinate across departments, and engage top level support. Department level: provide framework for departments to develop customized energy/electricity management plans.

• 2.4 Mile Metrorail Extension to MIA• $500 Million - People’s Transportation Fund surtax and state funds• 1,000 daily boardings since opening of Airport Link• Expect 12% increase system wide with completion of Tri-Rail, Amtrak, and

RESPONSIBLE LAND USE AND SMART TRANSPORTATION

Initiative 48: Use Waste as Energy at the WASD South District Wastewater Treatment Facility

OUR ENVIRONMENT

Objective: trap and consume both landfill and digester gases from the County's landfill and the wastewater treatment plant to increase the amount of self-generated electricity.

Results: generate an additional 33,500 KW of electricity per year from gases that would normally be wasted.

Two-phase project: • COMPLETED: Construction of a

pipeline to transport methane gas from landfill to WASD facility

• ON-GOING: Addition of new and upgrade of existing cogeneration facility
