Chemical Hygiene Task Force Update

Chemical Hazard Classifications The HAZCOM standard recognizes the following hazard classes. Each class also includes categories and sub-categories that indicate relative hazard severity for chemicals within the class.

Health Hazard Classes (ref: HAZCOM Standard Appendix A)

Acute toxicity

Skin corrosion / irritation

Serious eye damage/eye irritation

Respiratory or skin sensitization

Germ cell mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Reproductive toxicity Specific target organ toxicity – single exposure

Specific target organ toxicity – repeated or prolonged exposure

Aspiration hazard

Physical Hazard Classes (ref: HAZCOM Standard Appendix B)

Explosives Flammable gases Flammable aerosols Oxidizing gases

Gases under pressure Flammable liquids Flammable solids Self-reactive chemicals

Pyrophoric Liquids Pyrophoric solids Self-Heating Chemicals Emit flammable gases on contact with water

Oxidizing liquids Oxidizing solids Organic peroxides Corrosive to metals

OSHA Defined Hazards: Pyrophoric gas, Simple Asphyxiant, Combustible Dust

Status and Updates from Task Forces

Safety Policies, Procedures and Documentation

• Research Safety shared drive Location of draft document Current content or links to content

• Members now reviewing content What really belongs in this manual? How should the sections be organized? What material is ready or almost ready as is? What needs to be rewritten? Is anything missing?

• Ideas for navigating this large informational repository What are user needs?

Lab Survey Task Force Update

Michael Fisher, Director, RSMG

Status and Updates from Task Forces

Laboratory Safety Surveys

• We will conduct lab surveys to identify and assist in the mitigation of deficiencies that are not in compliance with applicable codes, standards, policies and regulations and that may present an unsafe research environment.

• This is a collaborative effort with the Departments and laboratory

personnel.

Action Items from First Meeting

• Look at different types of survey sheets and develop one with explicit components (electrical, waste, fire, etc.)

• Decide who will comprise inspection teams – reps from RSMG, EH&S, B&G, Environmental Services, others? and either a DSC/USC/SSC/LSC rep from the department

• Look at options for automated (iPad w/photos) documentation of surveys

• Require surveyed lab to respond in writing re: all items needing corrections

NFPA 704 HAZARD IDENTIFICATION SIGNAGE

DEVELOP ESCALATION POLICY FOR ONGOING ISSUES

NEXT STEPS?

Remember, unless we are constantly vigilant, laboratory accidents can happen anytime, anywhere!

First Meeting 6/17/13

Work plan – Curriculum:

• Current and proposed – Training Platforms – Implementation – Tools – Notifications and Reminders – Tracking

Second Meeting 7/11/13

• Addressed the current curriculum

• Individual Taskforce members assigned to review content of each course & will report back at the July 25th meeting.

• We will also touched upon trainings specific to roles i.e. research tech vs. admin sitting in lab environment

Going Forward

• Some of us will attend a health stream training to better understand it’s capabilities

• Continue to work the plan and address each item on the work plan
