Why I Love Mesa I can’t tell you how much I love living in the Mesa area, and if you’re in the process of relocating to Mesa, I know you’re going to love this Mesa Relocation Guide! It has over 170 pages of detailed information on our wonderful city, school, neighborhoods, activities, home values…everything that you need to know. There are so many benefits to living in the Phoenix area, and Mesa is one of its top suburbs. Why do I think Mesa Arizona is great! I am not going to parrot facts from Sperlings or Street Advisor. Everyone is different….This is my opinion…...Mountain views, people, weather, outdoor activities, economic stability and culture are my hot points.
Mountain views
Superstition Mountains I live in far east Mesa, almost in Apache junction. I just love driving down the road and seeing the superstition mountains. When I bought my house I needed at least a small mountain view. Mesa has views of Usery Mountain, Superstition Mountain, Goldfield Mountains, McDowell Mountains, and Phoenix Mountains. I used to hike Usery mountain trails. I love the vast views. This is my Nirvana.

People
Great People
My personal experience with the people is very positive. There is a strong sense of community here. People reach out and help each other. For example I was driving in a downpour, I needed to make a u turn in a fairly rural area in Mesa….my front wheel inched into the mud on the side of the road and my whole car slid into the mud. I was stuck. I called auto club….as I waited 3 different sets of gentlemen (I use that term specifically) stopped in the driving rain, slogged into the mud and tried to pull me out. The 3rd gentleman succeeded. There were also people that stopped to make sure help was coming. This was a rural area….traffic was light t best. I must add I am not a young cutie men will stop to impress. My husband and daughter have had similar experiences. So my overall impression is a people that truly do care for each other.
Weather
Sun I grew up in Illinois. I had 4 seasons (2 were wonderful…spring and fall). I miss fall the most. There were clear crisp days enjoying the fall colors. I had a lot of cold and wet and overcast days. I do not miss that. Mesa is sunny and warm. Winter is amazing here with temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s. Our bad weather is the intense heat in the summer, while 100 and dry is pleasant…..120 is blazing hot. So we stay in the air-conditioning. I would rather have the heat than the cold. I have never slid off the road because of heat…. Only the ice (and once in the rain).

Outdoor Activities
Red Mountain Golf Course
Tubing on Salt River
Spring Training
This goes hand in hand with the weather. The area has tons of hiking, golf, bike trails, parks, pools, splash pads, river tubing, boating, fishing, hunting, spring training camps and professional sports.
Economic Stability and Growth
Mesa is fiscally conservative. The city is not in debt. The city is growing. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the US. The city is also affordable. Taxes are low and employment is high. Ok this is dry boring stuff, but it is important to me.
Culture
Mesa Grande Ruins
Mesa Arts Center
Mesa Women’s Club
Mesa has has a great Arts Center that brings in national acts and plays, local community theater, museums, archeological sites, libraries, and historic buildings. I am a former Architect. I love historic buildings.

Description of Mesa Arizona
About Mesa
Located 20 miles from downtown Phoenix, Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona and is located in the south-central portion of the state in Maricopa County. Sitting atop a plateau overlooking the Valley of the Sun, the city gets its name from the Spanish word for “tabletop.”
As you can see Mesa is a long city in the east west axis. It is approximately 18 miles long following the 60 Freeway. Due to this long stretch Mesa is often referred to as either East Mesa or West Mesa.
Area: 125.18 square miles (2000)
Elevation: 1,241 feet above sea level

Mesa History
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area had been inhabited for centuries by native peoples, including the Hohokam and later the Pima. The Hohokam culture developed an extensive system of irrigation canals, some of which are still used today.
Controlled by Spain and then by Mexico, the area was ceded to the U.S. following the Mexican War (1846–1848). Mormon settlers arrived on the site in 1878 and used the old irrigation canals for farming in the Salt River valley. Mesa was incorporated as a town in 1883 and as a city in 1930.
Founded by Mormon agricultural pioneers, Mesa today is growing like a weed. Far enough from Phoenix to retain its small town feel yet near enough to the big city to encourage the growth of technological and manufacturing industries, Mesa has become more than a retirement community and has evolved into a tourist mecca in its own right. Layers of native, frontier, and Mexican history have combined to form a city of eclectic tastes and offerings, from the prehistoric farming canals deep in the ground to the aviation businesses that take to the skies.
Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Base were built in 1941 to train fighter pilots during World War II. After the war, the city grew rapidly, as many military families decided to settle in Mesa permanently, and tourism also became a major force. Williams AFB closed in the early 1990s, but Falcon Field has become one of the ten largest U.S. airports in terms of based aircraft and supports more than 30 aviation-related businesses.
Currently Mesa is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, due to its excellent climate and strong local economy, which boasts some of the country's top manufacturers. Electronics, automotive testing, propulsion equipment, aerospace, and heavy machinery firms are among the most significant in the region.
The Mesa corridor has a diversified economic base, from aerospace/aviation, agri-business; automotive and business services to educational institutions, electronics, health services, manufacturing, retail and transportation services. Mesa is a sprawling greenbelt and important Valley business corridor noted for welcoming a diverse culture. Serving as the winter home for the Chicago Cubs, Mesa offers many options for living the good life, from small family-centered neighborhoods to wide open spaces with horse properties, surrounded by numerous parks, good schools, golf courses, tennis courts, historical sites, museums, art galleries, theaters, restaurants, and shopping centers.

Mesa AZ Activities
Mesa has something for everyone! Whether you are a resident, here on business or enjoying a vacation with the
family, be sure to take advantage of all Mesa has to offer. Adults and kids alike can find fun in our year-round
sunshine. From baseball to dinosaurs - the possibilities are endless – just pick your adventure and explore Mesa!
Mesa has Arts and Culture, family and grownup activities, festivals and holidays, spectator sports, outdoor
activities, shopping and dining…what else you can need!
Arts and Culture The Mesa Arts Center, opened in 2005, is the largest arts center in Arizona at 212,775 square feet of space for performing arts facilities, visual arts galleries and studios, and art education classrooms. The outside of the complex is as inviting as the inside, with a design reflective of the surrounding Sonoran Desert in hue, shape and landscaping. A 700-foot Shadow Walk serves as a cool outdoor plaza for events or relaxing during a tour. Located in the heart of downtown Mesa, the Arts Center campus contains three buildings, including a four-theater complex. The theater spaces are: the 1,588-seat Tom and Janet Ikeda Theater; the 550-seat Virginia G. Piper Repertory Theater; the 200-seat Nesbitt/Elliott Playhouse; and the 98-seat Anita Cox Farnsworth Studio Theater. The other facilities on the Arts Center campus are the Mesa Contemporary Arts Building and the Art Studios' classrooms and work areas.
Ballet Etudes is housed within the Mesa Arts Center, offering serious ballet performers an experience akin to a professional dance company. Ballet Etudes stages "The Nutcracker" annually, along with a Spring Repertory performance. The dancers have performed with the Mesa Symphony Orchestra, soon also to be located under the Arts Center roof. Besides its five scheduled orchestral performances each season, the Mesa Symphony Orchestra does outreach in the public schools and provides vouchers that allow students and their families to attend future performances at a reduced rate. The Metropolitan Youth Symphony involves 275 excellent young musicians in a minimum of three concerts each season, providing a professional-level experience for aspiring performers. The Sonoran Desert Chorale's 56 vocalists present four major concerts each season, with selections ranging from the classical to the Broadway stage.
Billed as "theatre for children by children," the East Valley Children's Theatre encourages creativity, self-confidence, and expression through community theatrical performances. The company puts on three productions each season, along with a host of workshops and classes for youth between the ages of 8 and 18. Also offering three plays per season is the Southwest Shakespeare Company, which strives to bring classical theater to the masses through dynamic live performances. The actors are able to share their appreciation for the Bard via student matinees, post-show seminars, and play introductions. For theater along with edible fare, the Broadway Palm West Dinner Theatre is recommended.

Mesa Grande Cultural Park-- The Hohokam, the ancestors of the Akimel O'odham (Pima), constructed the Mesa Grande temple mound. With walls made from "caliche," the calcium carbonate hardpan that forms under our desert soils, the mound is longer and wider than a modern football field and is 27 feet high. Construction of the mound began by AD 1100 and continued to at least AD 1400. A large adobe wall encloses the mound and a large plaza in front of the mound. In one corner of the site, volunteers from the Arizona Museum of Natural History constructed a replica of a Hohokam ballcourt, an open-air structure where ballgames were played using a rubber ball made from a local plant. The City of Mesa purchased the Mesa Grande ruins in the 1980s to preserve Mesa's premier cultural treasure and to open it to the public as an educational and recreational facility. Open from mid-October to mid-May.

Festivals and Holidays The desert heat in summer dictates that festivals and outdoor events in Mesa are concentrated in winter, spring and fall months with a bit of a summer siesta in between. Every year can vary but a sample would be--the year kicks off in January with the Martin Luther King, Jr., Festival. Mesa joins forces with Phoenix and other East Valley communities to put on the Blues Blast. From January to March Spring out to Lunch Concert Series is performed for free for families. The Renaissance Festival runs from February to March.
Cinco de Mayo festivities start May off with festivals around the valley. For 45 years, Mesa has held a Fourth of July party; the Mesa Symphony Orchestra typically provides a rousing rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner."
Native American art, culture, music, dancing, and food are the focus of the Mesa Pow Wow in late October. Elaborate native dress and dance competitions attract visitors from many tribes and states. From November through April, art takes to the streets with Mesa's Sculptures in the Streets program, during which the public can stroll through temporary sculpture displays along downtown Main Street. In December, Main Street is again the destination for holiday celebrations in the downtown area. Mesa's Merry Main Street decks the halls with lights, gingerbread houses, tempting wrapped packages and a visit by Santa.

Sports for the Spectator
The Chicago Cubs get ready for baseball season at Mesa's own Sloan Park. In 2004, baseball fans at Hohokam Field broke attendance records for Major League Baseball Spring Training. The Cactus League gets started in early March and wraps the Spring Training season up in approximately a month. Locals and visitors get the opportunity to preview not just the Cubs but also their impressive roster of opponents, including the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres. The Oakland A’s spring training is at the renovated Hohokam stadium.
Baseball doesn't end in March, though—Mesa and Hohokam Field are also hosts to Golden League and Fall League baseball. The Golden League subsidizes professional independent teams in Arizona and California at present; the Mesa Miners play ball from May through August. In October and November, Fall League baseball picks up the slack, with the Mesa Solar Sox providing a preview of the next generation of Major League Baseball players.
Mesa Community College's Thunderbirds compete in a variety of sports at the National Junior College Athletic Association level, with teams in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and track. Phoenix offers more professional and collegiate sports options, from the Cardinals football team to the Suns basketball program to the Diamondbacks baseball organization. In addition there is professional car racing, horse racing, and racing Saturday nights at Arizona Speedway.
Major-league teams for football (Cardinals),and the Arizona Rattlers (arena Football), baseball (Diamondbacks), basketball (Suns) and Phoenix Mercury (WNBA) and hockey (Coyotes) all play in the area, and Arizona State University brings additional sports excitement.

Jean first helped us find our new home, then sold our first home in record time. Thoroughly researched comparables to set a realistic price and collaborated well with us on best approach. Worked hard to understand the positives of the house and neighborhood, and emphasized these in the listing. Very responsive to our questions and phone calls. House sold on first day it was listed, we got a great offer thanks to Jean's representation and discussion with other interested realtors and their clients. Mary Beth and Tim
Jean was the second agent that we contacted (when the first one did not work out). She helped us find a home within just a few days. We would recommend her to anyone and would use her again. Donna and Dave

Open Enrollment
Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek and Higley welcome open-enrollment students from other Arizona districts. There are also many Charter schools to choose from. So you can enroll your student in any school IF there is capacity at that school—check with the school.
Arizona students may attend public schools outside their attendance areas or their districts. A school cannot enroll resident and nonresident transfer students unless it has excess capacity to serve additional students without adversely affecting educational opportunities for resident students attending their resident school. Factors to be considered in making this determination include, but are not limited to, the following:
physical capacity of the school and classrooms availability of staff capacity of grade levels, courses, and relevant special programs availability of other resources
If no excess capacity exists, the school denies the applications. If excess capacity is anticipated, the school reviews the applications.
Schools will first offer admission to students who are currently enrolled when application is made for enrollment for the following year. Other applicants will be admitted if the school has capacity for the applicant’s enrollment at the time of application
All that said—check with the school you are interested in to see if you can enroll your child there.
