MERMAID 5th Meeting, March 18th–21st, Athens, Greece

The European Union, has launched in 2011 “The Ocean of Tomorrow” call for proposals. Through this programme, the

EU has made available to the scientific and entrepreneurial community a total funding of €14 M (project specific

budgets mentioned below include both EC and non EC financial contribution) for up to three projects that explore the

design of Offshore Multi-use Platforms, in which a mixture of different sectors and specific functions can be performed

in a shared location with shared infrastructure (and costs) and could prove to be an important opportunity for

improved utilisation of the oceans as well as sustainable economic growth. Therefore, developing a concept of Multi-

use Oceanic Platforms has become one of the EU’s most interesting bets to guarantee the use and synergistic

exploitation of oceanic resources in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. The three selected and financed projects in

the framework of “The Ocean of Tomorrow” call for proposals are:

MERMAID: http://www.mermaidproject.eu/ , budget: 7.4 million euro

MERMAID - Innovative Multi-purpose Off-shore Platforms: Planning, Design and Operation – aims at developing novel

innovative design concepts for offshore platforms to address different physical conditions (from deep water to shallow

and inner waters) in order to make the best use of the ocean space. Launched in January 2012 for 3 years, MERMAID

gathers 28 partners from 13 countries, under the coordination of DanmarksTekniskeUniversitet (Denmark).

TROPOS: http://www.troposplatform.eu/tropos-european-collaborative-project/Presentation-of-The-TROPOS-

Project, budget 7 million euro

TROPOS is a European collaborative project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework

Programme for Research and Development, more specifically under the "Ocean of Tomorrow" call OCEAN 2011.1 –

Multi-use offshore platforms. The TROPOS Project aims at developing a floating modular multi-use platform system

for use in deep waters, with an initial geographic focus on the Mediterranean, Tropical and Sub-Tropical regions, but

designed to be flexible enough so as to not be limited in geographic scope. TROPOS gathers 19 partners from 9

countries (Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, France, Norway, Denmark, Greece and Taiwan), under the

coordination of PLOCAN (Spain - http://www.plocan.eu/es/).

H2OCEAN: http://www.h2ocean-project.eu/ , budget: 6 million euro

H2OCEAN – Development of a Wind-Wave Power Open-Sea Platform Equipped for Hydrogen Generation with Support

for Multiple Users of Energy – aims at developing an economically and environmentally sustainable multi-use open-

sea platform on which wind and wave power will be harvested.Part of the generated energy will be used for multiple

applications on-site, including the conversion of energy into hydrogen that can be stored and shipped to shore, and a

multi-trophic aquaculture farm. Launched in January 2012 for 2 years, H2OCEAN involves industrial and academic

partners from 5 countries.

The 5th MERMAID Project Meeting and the 1st ‘OCEAN OF TOMORROW’ Socio-Economic Workshop is organized by

the Athens University of Economics and Business and is taking place in Athens, March, 18-21, 2014.

D. From Airport to Syntagma Square (City Centre)

Bus and Metro

Athens International Airport ‘Eleftherios Venizelos” is directly connected with most main airports in Europe. Detailed information about flights schedule can be found in airport’s webpage:

http://www.aia.gr/traveler/

Bus line X95, operating at a 24/7 basis, and metro line 3 (blue line), operating between 05.30 am and 23.30 pm approximately, connect the Airport with Syntagma, in the centre of Athens. X95 bus station is situated right outside of arrivals hall, whereas metro line is on a 5-10 minutes walking distance from the arrivals hall. The duration of the trip is about 1 hour by bus and 40 minutes by metro; both services run every 30 minutes. Detailed information about timetables and fares can be found in the following webpages:

http://www.oasa.gr/content.php?id=airlines

Taxi

Taxis are located right outside of the arrivals hall. The trip to the city centre should take 45 minutes approximately, subject to traffic conditions, and the fare should be around € 40.

E. Hotel reservation

We have arranged a special rate deal for the project meeting participants on Electra Palace Hotel

(5*) and Electra Hotel (4*), both located very close to meeting venue, Syntagma Square and other

main attractions of Athens. Please make sure to book by February 27th; the special rate deal will be

valid subject to room availability after that date.

F. Dinner

The mutual dinner event of the meeting will take place in “Orizontes Lycabbetus” Restaurant on

the top of Mount Lycabettus (please see sightseeing Section H). You may take this opportunity

and walk around the restaurant area; the hill offers a spectacular view over Athens. The dinner fee

is approximately € 40 per person. The most convenient way to go there is to take the cable car

that departs from Kolonaki area (Aristippou 1 Street) in the city centre (10-20 mins walk from the

venue, but it is uphill so probably it would preferable to reach this point by taxi) and arrives right

in front of the restaurant. The fare is 7 euro roundtrip (operating every 30 minutes) for the cable

car and € 1-2 per person for the taxi. Alternatively, Mount Lycabettus can be reached by taxi

(which should cost up to 4 € per person and be 5 minutes drive from Electra Hotels) up to some

point, but another 5-10 minutes walk is required to reach the restaurant. More details about the

dinner will be provided during the meeting.

two venues can be conveniently reached by metro red line (line 2). Panepistimio metro station (2-

3 minutes walk from the venues) is only one stop away from Syntagma metro station.
