Cymatic ExchangeThis project extends the San Fernando Valley
Swap Meet to provide a space of exchange for Craig’s List transactions. Inspired by its context, it amalgam-ates the tectonics and the arrangement of the flea mar-ket and the big box retailers and warehouses across the street. Given the unknown properties of objects and services being exchanged, the building proposes a condition of maximal spatial variation, arguing that programmatic exibility is supported by spatial specicity rather than generic free plan. It turns to Cymatics or resonance patterns start to introduce ways of changing circulation and creating visual connections within spac-es. As the resulting fragments aggregate to a whole, a range of spaces are developed. These spaces range in sizes, open spans, and privacy, to support the multiple programs of Craigslist.

Dissolution of the Regular
“What is regular is dead, without movement,
unpainterly.”
Using the idea of painterliness as it is based on an illusion of move-ment, the profile was manipulated using techniques such as rotate, sweep, revolve, etc, to create forms. Besides the manipulation of profiles, light and shade are used as anoth-er element of movement. Using the patterns casted from shadow studies, the skin for the forms emerge, allow-ing light and shade to come into the form and reshape the space.
“A strictly classical temple, if it is not in ruins, [it] is not a pictur-esque object. However impressive it may be as a piece of architec-ture, it would look monotonous
in a picture...But a baroque build-ing is more animated, and would therefore be an easier subject for a painterly effect. The freedom on a line and the interplay of light
and shade are still satisfying to the painterly taste in direct proportion to the degree to which they trans-gress the rules of architecture.”

Taking the Reins//Lath Bathroom Pavilion
The Lath Bathroom Pavilion is an existing structure designed for the nonprofit organization Taking the Reins, which serves adolescent girls in Los Angeles. Their pro-grams teach life skills to middle- and high-school girls primarily through horse care and riding. In addition to their Equestrian Program, girls can participate in the Urban Farming Program. The structure was designed as a com-posting toilet, through lath, and 4x4’s. The designed is based on the idea of layering in order to create privacy and intances of aperatures for light and wind flow.

Walk This Way: A New Neighborhood
Trying to re-design the Cornfields Arroyo Seco area in Los Angeles start-ing from an urban scale, then zooming into a building scale, concepts applied to Vancouver, Canada were considered as the design was trying to allow for more open space, but still allow density. These concepts taken from Vancouver where applied through the re-designing of streets. Taking the existing grid, ma-nipulating it, and setting a hierchy be-tween streets was important for organi-zation on the floor. These streets would become TYPE A=Complete Streets, TYPE B=Shared Streets, and TYPE C=Pedestrian Only Streets. These types of streets are then placed and designed to fit into the LA HISTORIC PARK by setting a grid spe-cific to the site. The grid is set North South --East West orientation, set for solar exposure. After the grid was set, program was plugged in which consist of Residential, Offices, and Retail. Also, different types of FAR are considered for the site. 1:6 (Being closest to the Metro Station), 1:3 and 1:1.5 As the specifics are put into place, the design starts to zoom scales where an Eco Block from the site is taken and the full design can be imple-mented. It might be considered that this design is placed on already existing green space, but it is green space that is under utelized. It is used mainly for pri-vate events, such as raves and this park is a barrier between cities. By occupy-ing the park, the city gains much more, such as housing, potential job centers and linkage between cities. Also, based on the design, the park still maintains 20 acres of usable green space.

Vernacular Studies The Malay Houses (Page 36) are structures that are built above ground. These have a lot
of envelopes within the buildings for climate reasons, such as ventilation. When it comes to the massing of these houses, there are different variations due to additions that are made to
accomidate the users. Circulation is similar of traditional houses of today, where there are the same style of programs laid through the house.
The Galician Granaries or Horreos are storehouses used to store threshed grain or
animal food. They are made of stone and raised on pillars for protection from miceand animals.Ventilation is allowed through small slits in the walls, to keep moisture
away, as it causes food to spoil.

Taking the Reins_eXtension
This project is based on a matte strategy that can plug in anywhere in the site allows it to multiply. The structure is a basic wood framing system, with a roof framing system that is a bit more complex since it is ment to create twists that allow for skylights. This project is an ex-tension to the Taking the Reins Project from the Design Build Studio. Taking the same concepts and strategies the project was extended to a more permanent approach and re-designed with its systems-such as-- Structure, Envelope, Lighting, Passive and Active, Water Strategies and Building Systems.
