John now works on a variety of printing tasks, such as die cutting, operating
collating and folding machines, printing and
guillotining. He is conscientious, safety conscious
and a team player.
John also gets on very well with his workmates,
listing his friendships and the variety of machines
he uses as the most enjoyable things about his job.
He is also deaf.
This disability has not dampened his enthusiasm for work or interpersonal
communication or his sense of fun, playing practical jokes, particularly on his close
friend and supervisor Dawn Boyce with whom he has worked for years. Says
Dawn, “ If I had to say something about John, it would be that John is a funny,
hardworking and sensitive guy. He has great work ethics and thrives upon his days
at Westcare”.
John is as self-sufficient away from work as he is at the office. He has his own
home, drives, cycles, spends hours on the computer or watching movies, with a
penchant for sci-fi. Cooking, however, is not one of his favourite pastimes. His
ambitions include touring Australia and visiting the United States and Europe.
His only regret is that most people do not know sign language, which limits his
gregarious nature. He remembers fondly the many people with whom he has
worked and wants nothing more than to continue what he is doing. A happy man
living a good life!

Meet John...
John is a gentle giant with a great sense of humour
and a love of astronomy, reading, cycling and sports
cars, especially Porsche.
He also personifies everything an employer wants in
an employee.
John started working full-time for Westcare in 1986,
where he began work on a letter press. To increase his
knowledge in all things print, John attended Technical
College and completed two Certificates in Printing Ma-
chining and Small Offset Printing part time over 4
years.

In our previous newsletter, we showcased the City of Stirling - a worthy recipi-
ent of the 2017 LG Professionals WA “Lighthouse” Award for its work in partnering
with Workpower - in the Management of recycling at their Balcatta waste facility,
with the benefit of providing better employment outcomes.
We heard on the grapevine the City has been selected as a category winner in this
year’s National Awards for Local Government - Disability Access and Inclusion.
The National Awards for Local Government is an annual celebration of Australian
local government achievements. The Awards highlight innovative and resourceful
solutions that local Governments have implemented to make a difference within their
communities.
The City is well placed to take out the top gong in June, for making a significant
difference to provide greater opportunities for people with disability and those living
with mental illness to participate in local community life.

Marketabilities 2018
The Spine & Limb Foundation will be hosting a
'Marketabilities' event this Saturday, May 19, 2018
from 10:am to 2pm.
Marketabilities is a 'can-do' outdoor event featuring
'market' themed activities where artists with disabilities will present quality artworks
and people in supported employment will demonstrate their work skills.
This unique event provides opportunities for the public to appreciate the capabili-
ties of people living with disabilities and to gain insights through interactive engage-
ment and in some instances, guided tours
Marketabilities provides the opportunity to appreciate the efforts of people living
with disabilities in positive lifestyle roles as they sell a range of arts and crafts, deli-
cious produce and plants
Volunteer masseurs and reflexologists will run
a Wellness Marquee for those who enjoy the
therapeutic experience. All proceeds go to sup-
porting people with disability.
Come and check out ‘Book Bazaar’ where you
can browse through the rows and rows of quality
and unique second hand books at bargain prices. or wander through their great op
shop—Opportunity Knocks. .
Come and experience this special event at 10 Selby St. Shenton Park while sup-
porting the efforts of people who exemplify an anything is possible attitude!

Activ Artspace 2018
The Activ Artspace Exhibition returns in 2018 for a fifth year.
This is a free public exhibition featuring original art pieces created by people liv-
ing with disability. The 2018 exhibition will feature a collection of original photo-
graphs alongside painted pieces created through a range of different mediums.
The exhibition will run from Monday, 28 May to Friday, 1 June.
