Standard Measurement System

Using the same system of measurement minimizes confusion among scientists all over the world.

Modern scientists use an expanded metric system called the International System of Units. It is abbreviated SI.

Using SI as the standard system of measurement allows scientists to compare data and communicate with each other about their results.

Background – World Wide

Three countries have not officially adopted the International System of Units as their primary or sole system of measurement: Liberia, Myanmar, and the United States.

United States

Myanmar (formly known as Burma)

Liberia (Settled by free-men and former enslaved blacks after America’s Civil war.

Background – United States

• The U. S. has switched to Metric with– Sporting Events - Olympics– Military– Medicine– Scientific studies

Length

The basic unit of length in SI is the meter (m).

Millimeter (mm) – one thousandthCentimeter (cm) – one hundredthKilometer (km) – one thousand

Weight

How can your weight change if the amount of matter in your body stays the same? (i.e. if you were on the moon)

Your weight is a measure of the force of gravity on you. Weight is measured in units such as newtons or pounds. The newton is an SI unit.

MassMass is a measure of the amount of

matter an object contains.

– The amount of mass in an object does not change.

– Gravitational force can change (i.e. the moon), which can cause weight to change.

– This is the reason scientists prefer to measure matter by it’s mass rather than its weight.

Units of Mass

The SI unit of mass is the kilogram- Grams

How many grams in a kilogram?

Volume

Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m³)

-We will use smaller units:- liters, milliliters or cubic centimeters

Volume of Liquids

Meniscus – Curve in the top if the liquid surface. You will measure at the bottom of the meniscus.

Units of Time

The second (s) is the SI unit of time.

Temperature

Scientists commonly us the Celsius scale.-Water freezes at 0°C-Water boils at 100°C

• Devices that you can measure with- such as a metric ruler…….
