PARISH VISION STATEMENT As the Parish of Saint Columbkille, we strive to be a welcoming, caring, Catholic family that transforms lives, proclaiming the Kingdom of God.
(Vision is about who we want to be in the future…)
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT As missionary disciples of Jesus, being formed as a community through Scripture and Sacraments, we are sent into the world to joyfully proclaim the Gospel with our lives.
PARISH MISSION AND VISION
Happy Father’s Day Weekend! From the isolating effects and fear generated by the pandemic to the tragic events surrounding the murder of George Floyd, needless to say, we all need a reason to hope that tomorrow will be better than today. Our current cultural situation is quite bleak: divorce rates are skyrocketing; adultery is rampant; we have many non-married
cohabitating couples; children have been abandoned by their fathers or mothers; the legalization of “same-sex unions” adopting children and calling this the “modern family;” pornography invading homes, leading to powerful addictions and total alienation from other members of the family: all of this is a bird’s eye view of the family situation in the modern world. There is great hope on the horizon! Authentic fatherhood is the solution to nearly all of the above problems. My personal prayer and holy hours before the Blessed Sacrament have led me to asking God the Father one simple question: What must I do to help rebuild family life and promote a culture of life that honors God and love of neighbor? God the father has revealed to me in prayer that fatherhood is under attack in our culture. The mother is the heart of the family, but the father is the “head” of the family. What then are goals that every man who is called to the marriage vocation should aim to attain so that indeed he can live out what is true “fatherhood” in a world of “drop-out dads,” negligent fathers, and overly timid men? First, to be a good father he should first be a good “Son of God the Father.” The father of the family represents and reflects the image of God the Father. If a father has an identity crisis in the spiritual realm – that is to say, he does not understand his intimate relationship to God the Father – then he will not be able to transmit to his children and family an authentic vision of God the Father. However, if the earthly father has encountered God the Father in an intimate, personal, filial, and convincing way then he will be able to transmit this fatherhood to those whom God will place under his care. A prime example can be found in the life of Karol Wojtyla – the future Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. He lost his mother at 9 years of age and then spent much of his time with his father; they even shared the same bedroom at night. Young Karol recalls waking up in the early hours, way before dawn, and seeing the figure of his father kneeling, deeply absorbed in prayer. This example of his father left an indelible impression on the young Karol. His earthly Father had a deep and intimate relationship to God the Father and transmitted this to his son. Then Karol would become the great “Holy Father” – Pope John Paul II, one of the greatest and clearest reflections of true fatherhood in the history of the world. This week join me in praying for all our fathers. My biological father taught me to discover how much I am loved by my Heavenly Father. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER
FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR A lecturer predicted to his audience that the world would come to an end in about seven billion years. “How long did you say?” came a terrified voice from the back of the auditorium. “Seven billion years,” the speaker repeated. “Thank goodness!” said the voice. “For a moment I thought you said seven million.” (from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL. 4, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1986) Even seven billion years from now, each human being will still be of infinite value because of the way God our Father has created us. We are indeed worth more than many sparrows. So, let us not be afraid to speak and act as God’s children.
REVERENT RECEPTION OF THE EUCHARIST As we celebrate Corpus Christi Sunday, our attention is called to the Precious Body and Blood of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. This is a good time to take stock of how well and reverently we receive Christ, who is truly present in the Eucharist. Are we aware of mortal sin on our souls? All mortal sin must be confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we receive the Eucharist, lest we incur further sin for receiving unworthily (1 Corinthians 11:29). Do we participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly or are we in a pattern of receiving the Eucharist while rarely receiving sacramental absolution? Our participation in the Eucharist presumes our participation in Reconciliation.
When it comes to the way in which we physically receive the Host: in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, which is what we celebrate at St. Columbkille, we are permitted to receive either on the tongue or in the hand. Each form of reception is to be done properly. In both cases, after the minister says, “The Body of Christ,” we acknowledge this reality by responding “Amen” and giving a slight bow of the head. Then, if receiving on the tongue, the head is tilted slightly back and the tongue extended. If receiving in the hand, form a “throne” for Christ, according to St. Cyril of Jerusalem, by cupping one hand under the other. Allow the minister to place the Host flat in the palm of your hand – do not grasp for it. When receiving in the hand, please place the Host in your mouth while standing before the minister. The minister must watch to ensure that the host is received to protect against potential desecration. It is not appropriate to walk back to your pew with the Host! Then, after consuming the Host, check for particles on your hand and fingers – these are still the Eucharist – and consume any remaining elements of the Host.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when approaching the communion minister, you are to pull your mask below the chin, present one hand resting on the palm of the other and after responding “Amen,” the communicant reverently places the Eucharist in the mouth and immediately replaces their mask.
A blessed Corpus Christi Sunday to everyone! May Jesus in the Eucharist bless you abundantly and draw you ever deeper into the Father’s divine life. See you in the Eucharist!
WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Let us pray together the verse from Paul's letter to the church in Rome. Let us take great comfort in knowing that despite our sinfulness we have been redeemed in Christ. “…the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus.”

FINANCIAL NEWS AND PARISH MINISTRIES
FINANCIAL NEWS AND NOTES
• Since we are unable to attend Mass, you can always drop off your weekly offertory envelope at the Parish Office or you can put it in another envelope and mail it.
• When writing checks to the parish please write out the entire year 2020 in the date in order to avoid any potential fraud. By writing out the date as 1/1/20 (January 1, 2020), the year can be fraudulently changed to 2021, or any other date in this century. Instead, make sure when you’re dating documents in 2020 that you write the year out in full.
• Please refrain from sending us one single check
attached to multiple unmarked envelopes. The parish has no way of knowing how much money is being designated for each unmarked envelope therefore they must be returned. Please carefully mark your envelopes with the proper dollar amount so you can receive credit for your donation.
• Tuition assistance envelopes are processed separately from weekly offertory. Therefore, please write a separate check when contributing to tuition assistance. Catholic Charities envelopes are processed by the diocese so please write a separate check when contributing to Catholic Charities.
WEEKLY OFFERTORYThe offertory for June 13th and 14th is $12,195.00. This includes the envelopes we received at the parish during the week and at the Masses. The first half of June Faith Direct contributions were $13,438.00.
Thank You for your continued generosity to our parish!
