Overview
Media Democracy Days (MDD) is an annual public
event that has been held at the Vancouver PublicLibrary every autumn since 2001. A project o theSchool o Communication at Simon Fraser Universityand community group OpenMedia.ca, MDD eaturestwo days o keynote speakers, panel discussions, lmscreenings, and hands-on media production andpolicy-oriented workshops. Our intention is to bringscholars, students, community groups and individuals
together to encourage discussion and collaborationto democratize the media.
The central theme o MDD is the need or ordinarycitizens to become involved in learning about, andparticipating in, the production o media and theshaping o public policy about the media in Canada.

Know The Media
Change the Media
...through panel discussions and presentations that explore how the media systemswork, what content is excluded, and media impacts on culture and society. In the pastwe have included such topics such as greenwashing, ownership concentration, labourpractices, barriers to diversity, and political communications.
...by enhancing opportunities or a diversity o citizens to actively participate in
media-making, and to support alternative media practice. For example, we providemedia-making workshops and an extensive Media Fair that highlights existingorganizations.
...by looking at ways o intervening in questions o policy and regulation. In the pastthis has included panels on Internet surveillance, and copyright laws.
