Introduction
Masters in Business Administration (MBA), a master's degree in
business administration, has gained widespread recognition in India.
Traditionally, MBA programs in India have predominantly targeted
fresh students without any work experience. The MBA degree has
become one of the most popular masters' degrees, and has since
achieved worldwide recognition. Management education in India is
growing at a rapid rate. It is not only considered good education, but
most see it as a platform for high-paying jobs. The perception of a
management education goes far beyond mere academic education or
research education. Applying and beginning your career through
management education is not really the toughest task as on date.
What keeps this tough is the decision to be made while choosing the
right college. Which is the right college?! What are the parameters in
judging the right college?! Who will tell me if a college is good or bad?
This handbook may not help you in choosing a pre-determined college,
rest assured, it will help you make your decision and guide you till you
reach the class room of your dream college. Getting into management
education is very simple, but choosing the right college is very
difficult. Not all MBAs are paid well. Doing MBA from right institute is
most essential and getting admission into that is the challenge.
MBA is rewarding--if done from the right institute. Before recession,
during recession and I'm sure even after recession this 3 letter word
will continue to attract each one of us: at least the aspirants. There
are lot aspirants who still have many unanswered questions. This
Prepared by Nihit Jain 5
handbook sincerely hopes to answer all of your questions--well almost
all. Anyone can pursue MBA, but the inputs gained during the course
are rewarded.
Let’s get started!
What this book will cover --
- What is MBA all about?
- Why should we consider pursuing MBA?
- What would be best MBA SPECIALIZATION?
- Which college should I aim for?
- Should I consider pursuing a full time program, Part time
program or distance learning MBA?
- What is an Executive Program?
This handbook answers all the above questions and more. I hope after
reading the handbook, most aspects of Management education i.e.
MBA in India will be clear.
To begin with, CAT (Common Admission Test) is not the only entrance
exam for MBA. This handbook covers not only details on other exams,
but also details of the score trend the various institutes follow. This
handbook will not predict the scores or justify the scores; rather it will
only give the readers an overview of the trend in order to help the
readers make clear judgments.
Further, people are normally confused in selection of the Institutes
and the exam that they need to appear. In order to facilitate the
students, I thought to capture the same along with few institutes
which accepts these scores.
Prepared by Nihit Jain 6
Let us start with the basic difference…
What is an MBA?
Masters in Business Administration --- is a master’s degree offered by
selected institutes. The remaining offer Post graduate Diploma.
Masters
Master degree is provided by a university. This degree is further
categorized as MBA and MMS. There is hardly any difference between
the two. MBA stands for Masters in Business Administration whereas
MMS stands for Masters in Management Studies. The
colleges/institutes associated with Mumbai University admit students
under M-CET provide degree of MMS.
Deemed universities (status of autonomy granted by UGC) are also
recognized to provide MBA degree under their banner.
Broadly Masters Degree is divided into two parts.
- MBA
Prepared by Nihit Jain 7
- MMS
But with the introduction of new courses few other Master degrees
are MMM, MS, MA. These are further Management degree but
different specialization. Such as MA can be considered as Master of
Arts but when it is done from TISS, they have various specialization
such as disaster management, Human Resource Management and
Labour Relation, etc which is well renowned and of top quality.
Post Graduate
Post Graduate Degree is provided by autonomous institutes. In terms
of academics there is no different between PG and MBA. The
difference is only of the banner under which the degree is provided.
Both the degrees are recognized, provided an approval is granted by
UGC, AICTE.
Prepared by Nihit Jain 8
Post Graduate is further classified as below:
- PGP stands for Post Graduate Program
- PGDBM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Business
Management
- PGDBA stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Business
Administration
- PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management
As such there is no difference between any of these programs yet they
are named differently. The content of these courses is similar. Also the
pedagogy of teaching is almost similar. The pedagogy might differ
only to some extent depending on institute to institute.
Structure of Program
MBA/PG programs in India vary depending on the structure of the
program. The duration of the program is based on which type of
program we choose.
Prepared by Nihit Jain 9
Full-time Program is of two years. This is basically preferred by fresh
graduates and working professionals who are keen grow. Full time
program is considered to be the rigorous with hectic schedules. These
guys hardly get time to sleep.
Part Time Program is done by working executives. In order to pursue
the Part time program one needs to have minimum two years of work
experience and the duration of the course is three years.
Distance Learning or Correspondence MBA is generally preferred by
working executives. The basic idea behind pursuing distance MBA is
to add value in the resume so as to help in raising the ladder in
professional career.
Executive Program is a new approach to career development. This
program needs a minimum of two years work experience. Further
minimum work experience differs from one institute to other. In some
case it can be as high as 7 years.
Specializations
Specialization is the most essential and looked on aspect of MBA.
Many institutes are already recognized for the specialization they
provide. It is normally 2nd year when the specialization is selected in
many institutes but in some case it has to be chosen during 1st year
itself. There are institutes which don’t provide any specialization but
are focused on some core areas and provides electives in General
MBA; whereas there are few institutes which provide dual
specialization.
Prepared by Nihit Jain 10
There are various specializations available to choose from. I would
rather say it can be classified as Traditional and Modern. Here
traditional are those which are coming from very long time whereas
the recent addition into it can be termed as modern.
- Finance- Marketing- Human Resource - Operations- Information Technology- Telecom- Retail- Energy- Medical- Advertising and Communication- Tourism
These days’ students are more focused on their interest and move
ahead with the specialization that fulfill it. There are institutes which
are considered to be best in specialization that they provide.
Selecting right specialization is very important so as to grow in the
career. One can say that the selection of specialization shall be solely
focused on our interest.
Entrance Exams
Entrance exam is the first step towards journey to MBA. There are
many entrance exams conducted in India. Depending on which exam
you are appearing you can qualify for different institutes. Few
Prepared by Nihit Jain 11
Traditional
Modern
institutes conduct entrance exam for their own whereas many other
institutes don’t. Institutes which don’t conduct their own exams
accept the score of other institutes depending on their requirements.
Some of the entrance exams and the institutes that conduct it on All India Basis are as
follows.
Entrance Exam Conducted By Institute/ State
CAT IIM
XAT XLRI
MAT AIMA
SNAP Symbiosis
IBSAT ICFAI
NMAT NMIMS
IIFT Entrance IIFT
State Entrance (Few Entrances)
M-CET
GCET
ICET
States
Maharashtra
Gujarat
Andhra Pradesh
There are many institutes which do not conduct their own entrance
test. These institutes take the scores of tests conducted by various
other institutes. Some institutes also take scores from one or more
institutes.
There might be few institutes which take scores of other institutes as
well as conduct their own exam for those students who dint appear
other tests. Also there are many other states which conduct their state
entrance which has not been captured in above table.
Institutes in India
Prepared by Nihit Jain 12
The most important aspect of MBA is to choose right institute.
Selecting B School may be a nightmare when one needs to select
between two Good institutes. In order to facilitate the students, here I
tried to capture as many B Schools as possible. Now how do we rate
which B school is better than other? There are so many surveys
conducted each year, which survey shall we back upon and which one
shall not look on is again a difficult task.
Thus here you may get those B schools which have been rated by MBA
students, aspirants, alumni, recruiters and academicians. The below
listed institutes are based on perception based ranking conducted by
PagalGuy.com last year. Total no. of 5,960 People have taken part in
the polls. The PaGaLGuY.com B-school Rankings captures what India
thinks about its business schools and an accurate reading of the brand
perception that B-schools have.

Many would be in dilemma by seeing few institutes in higher ranking
where as other institutes in low rank. This is because one would get
the realistic picture of people who has taken the polls.
Prepared by Nihit Jain 16
The ranks of the institute might change from year to year but what is
important here is to know good institutes where one can bank upon.

listed here.
General Admission Procedure
The admission procedure for MBA/PG is based on various parameters. The general admission procedure is as follows. Further it may vary from one institute to other. For example Group Discussion is common in many institutes but in ICFAI Business School they have Micro Presentation instead of Group Discussion.
The admission procedure that normally an institute follows is as below.
- Written Test
Prepared by Nihit Jain 19
- Group Discussion- Personal Interview
Admission procedures differ in some cases on yearly basis and also from institute to institute. Few institutes also make aspirants to write an essay where as few conduct psychometric test.
Normally written test is comprised of questions from following areas
(which may differ from institute to institute)
Logical Reasoning
Quantitative Technique
Data Interpretation
Verbal Ability
General Knowledge (In some case)
The students are short listed after written test. Only those students
who qualify the written test are called for GDPI. Based on GDPI and
other details (such as Academic, Extra Curriculum, and Work
Experience) final list of selected candidates is issued.
Wrapping Up
Management education is in much demand in India. Selecting the
right B school is much more important than doing an MBA. MBA from
premier or good institute counts. One can find many MBA qualified
people everywhere around us, but only those with good tag get an

upper edge. Thus don’t be hasty in selecting the college, prepare
some steps/criteria on your own, which may help you in short listing
the college.
For example, the selection of college may be based on following
points:
Area of Interest
Faculty
Placement Record
Location and Infrastructure
Course Curriculum & pedagogy, etc.
One can add or delete the points based on our interest. This can be
considered as an example which may facilitate you to move ahead.
