It’s All About Timing
The Apollo 13 astronauts had a brief window of opportunity which required intentional decision making or they would not have safely made their journey home. Surfers understand the art of riding the waves that God builds. God makes the waves; surfers watch their timing and then just ride them or they miss their opportunity.
Just as God created the physics behind space craft re-entry timing, and just as God makes the waves (although we may “make waves”, rightly or wrongly at times), so does God in His own timing create waves (windows) of opportunity for His people and for each local church.
With the Lord, timing is more important than time. Although He created “chronos” time for our benefit, God is not bound by such measurements. God operates more in the realm of “kairos” time—proper timing. That’s why we often say “timing” is more important than “time.” When He creates the wave, it’s time to ride. And if we fail to ride the crest of the wave, we either get left behind in the backwash or we toss and tumble in the crashing turbulence.
The Bible speaks “of the children of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to

Men as Providers
The final responsibility of manhood Genesis 1-3 shows the reader is the fact that, post-fall, men will be primarily responsible to provide for their families. As discussed earlier, God created man to work. Prior to the fall, this work was a worshipful, cultivating, cultural work. However, when it came to providing, while man may have had to care and tend to the garden, any flourishing of vegetation would be the result of God, not man. There was no drought, no weeds, no disease, and no pests. Man was to work with and in the garden, but he never had to worry about meeting his family’s needs. Once sin enters the picture, man and woman can no longer enjoy this paradise and God shows, through the curse and the expulsion from the garden, that He still expects man to work, but that this work will now be hard, and will require man to provide for his family.
When the reader looks at the curses God gave to man and women in contrast, they can see that woman’s curse primarily has to do with family relations and man’s curse primarily has to do with providing for his family. Woman will have multiplied pains in childbirth, and will have a strained relationship with her husband. Now man will have to eat from the ground, which will require painful labor with thorns and thistles along with the food bearing plants. John Piper believes that God gives these curses to man and woman, affecting their natural spheres of life. He states, “Evidently God had in mind from the beginning that the man would take special responsibility for sustaining the family through bread-winning labor.”
To further support the argument of God expecting man to provide, as God sends man and woman out of the garden he sends him out to work. God created man to be a work-er, originally was going to sustain him in the garden, but now tells the man that he will be responsible for gathering his own food. Providing for a family is what God expects the man to do. As men seek to live biblically, especially in a world that is becoming more dominated by women who are the main breadwinners of the house, they need to strive to uphold the biblical truths that can be learned from Genesis. In a family, even when both husband and wife work, if there is no food it should be the man that feels a responsibility provide.

know what Israel ought to do” (1 Chronicles 12:32). The Israelites had earlier missed God’s timing when ten of the twelve spies voted not to enter the Promised Land. Their faithless decision resulted in a lost generation of wilderness wonderers.
Let’s all pray to have the spiritual discernment of the children of Issachar that we understand God’s timing—His window, His wave. We must not miss it.
I enjoy the thrill of bobbing in the ocean surf (not with surf board, but with boogie board) and seeing a wave building behind me. I position myself for the ride. My dear folks, I see God building a wave for Bethesda to ride. Are you willing to position yourself for the ride?

This will be my final short article on biblical manhood. I do believe this one deserves a short disclaimer. I am treating the topic of men as providers. Do not interpret me as suggesting that women should not work. I am also not suggesting that it is wrong for a wife to make more money than a husband. All I mean to say is that God looks to men as primary providers. When a family is in need of provision, the husband should feel the greatest responsibility to provide, as God assigned that role to him primarily at creation.

Awards night is here! Words can't express how dedicated this year Awana families have been to studying God's Word with their children. Clubbers will have likely memorized 2000 passages of scripture by the end of the year and completed over 200 hours of service in their communities. I hope you will join us Wednesday, May 28th at 6:30 PM to celebrate these families and continue to en-courage them in the great responsibility of discipling their children!

Mission Emphasis
(Continued) That’s right. Our new building campaign team is suggesting we continue our current “pay-off-the-debt” theme until September when a new theme will be launched. In order to continue our vital ministries and in order to consider new ministries, it is imperative that we rise to the occasion and meet this debt obligation as soon as possible. Along with the portion of the loan payoff included in our regular budget giving, we encourage all who can either begin or continue giving above our tithes and offerings to the “His Vision/Our Mission” campaign. The Lord is doing a great work here for His glory. Let’s trust Him to do a great work through our faithful giving in this matter as well!
Additional giving cards and envelopes will be available, although designation for the HVOM can be made on your regular giving envelopes.
Pray for your leadership team: David Duncan, Terry Gatewood, Sharon Johnson, Brian Murphy, Missy Urban, Charles Wilson, and Johnnie Gatlin (chairman).
